• Ep 48 - "How to Become a Rockstar with Neuroplasticity" with Veronique Bogliolo

    Neuroplasticity maketh the rockstar.

With today's guest, my friend and overall fabulous person Veronique Bogliolo of Bogliolo Coaching & Consulting, we talk about all the things.

See, Veronique is a coach. A leadership coach. A teams coach. A coach that believes in science-based approaches and makes things happen for her clients.

And delightfully, Veronique does not believe that coaching is something for the elite few. Her view, whether we talk about a professional coach you pay for or a cluster of trusted advisors, is that we all are only as good as the team that supports us. Have you assessed this for your own life recently? Who is on your team? Go ahead and do it, and recruit where needed. Because none of us are free of struggle, and all of us achieve more together.

This episode focuses on this philosophy, but beyond that talks about a unifying feeling so many of us share across political, geographical and other divides: we are tired. We are exhausted. And there seems to be no end in sight.

That is why I have asked Veronique to share the ingredients to her secret recipe that maketh the rockstar: her 7 steps to increased neuroplasticity. Leading to more energy. More satisfaction. More clarity. More peace.

  • Ep 47 - "How to Research that New Dream Job - Part 2" with Steven Rothberg

    The saga continues!

In our last episode, we had the stunning Steven Rothberg, Chief Visionary Officer at College Recruiter on the show with us. Now, Steven and Tom got to chatting and (un)fortunately chatted to such an extent that a two part special was necessary.

Part 1 focused on the work that comes before the actual deed of setting your search filters to "dream job". Part 1 is about you, your values, skills, interests and desired compensation.

Today, we will get into the nitty gritty of what it means to crusade across the width and depth of the all-powerful internet without getting lost. When faced with a situation in which a new job is required, the daunting task of starting to look for one can be so very energy consuming that we don't engage with it to the degree necessary. Steven is here to show us how to coax those dream jobs out from the infinite number of possible job search platforms and program them in a way that at least the search part of our job hunt runs on autopilot.

This is Part 2 of our conversation with Steven, and must at this point again express our gratitude for having had him on the show with us. A few listeners actually reached out, expressing thanks and so it is only fair to pass those on to the true master of this topic: thanks Steven!

    Let's go get it!

  • Ep 46 - "How to Research that New Dream Job - Part 1" with Steven Rothberg

    Research? That sounds dull...

We say: not so fast gentlewomen and gentlemen (and everybody in between), not so fast.

Needing a new job is a daunting prospect. Whether you find yourself made redundant at your current employer, are an independent that needs a break from the entrepreneurial hustle, or simply can no longer stand your current one and it is time.to.go.

With few and lucky exceptions, almost all of us have found ourselves at this junction in life. And for those of you who have been there, you will remember that the situations necessitating a new job tend to be a drain on our energy. And job search is an exceptionally energy-demanding task. Needless to say: it can be a terrible chore.

Which is why today on the HIGHER! Career Podcast, we invited the ever so delightful Steven Rothberg, Chief Visionary Officer at College Recruiter. While Steven's business focuses on helping college students take their first steps in the professional world, his insights transcend the realm of entry-level positions. You see, Steven is a virtuoso in the world of job boards, think Monster, LinkedIn, Google, the list goes on.

Have you ever found yourself staring blankly at the screen of the LinkedIn "Jobs" section, your mouse hovering over the "Search" field with your mind going blank, asking yourself "How do I even get started?".

Steven is here to break it down for us and teach us how to wield the power of job boards to curate an automated drip feed of potential jobs that:

    • Match your skills
    • Match your interests
    • Have a high potential of success should you decide to apply

This is Part 1 of our conversation with Steven, which focuses our attention on practical ways in which we can identify the building blocks we need to program this high-potential drip feed of jobs across job boards: your interests, your skills and experience, your values and your compensation.

  • Ep 45 - "How to Communicate with Confidence - Part 2" with Jayne Constantinis

A negotiation starts with how you walk into a room (even a virtual one) and it ends with how you exit it.

A negotiation, say about salary, pay grade, perks and compensation, is not a moment of healthy and functioning society. It is complex, personal and not, as the person at the opposite side of the table represents the interests of an inanimate thing, an organisation.

It is a thing of strategy, and it is a thing of skill. Most critically, it is a thing of perception, critically perception of confidence and the lack thereof. And projecting confidence friends, is something that can be learnt from the master of communication that indeed do walk among us.

One such master is Jayne Constantinis. TedX Speaker, presenter, facilitator, communication and presentation trainer, voice over artist of the HIGHEST calibre. And overall glorious human being, just fyi.

In this 2nd episode (click here for Part 1), Jayne escorts us into the world of what happens when people interact. Specifically, we will cover:

    • How to master the sound of silence.
    • How to enter and exit in style and why it matters.
    • Jayne’s secret tips and tricks that simply cannot be described but must be listened to.

If you want to learn more about and with Jayne, or are looking for someone just like her to reach your, your team’s or your company’s communications goals, be sure to get in touch with her and check out her website: https://www.jayneconstantinis.com

  • Ep 44 - "How to Communicate with Confidence - Part 1" with Jayne Constantinis

Learn how to negotiate and do it now. For we find ourselves in negotiations more often than we think.

There is only one tiny problem: to negotiate, we must communicate. And we must do so confidently.

Have you ever asked anyone for anything and then said “if that’s alright with you”? Exactly. We are trained from a young age, to the betterment of society truly, not to force our will upon others. So we do indeed ask, instead of tell. The hallmarks of a healthy and functioning society.

A negotiation, say about salary, pay grade, perks and compensation, is not a moment of healthy and functioning society. It is complex, personal and not, as the person at the opposite side of the table represents the interests of an inanimate thing, an organisation.

    • Can you communicate confidently even if you are shy or leaning towards a more introverted energy profile? With your authenticity intact?
    • Jayne’s 4 Pillars to communicating with confidence in a negotiation
    • Verbal and non-verbal communication
    • How “Online” has changed everything
    • Critically: all this juiciness is wrapped in a thick and glossy layer of sh*ts and giggles, because Jayne is hysterically funny.

  • Ep 43 - "How to Recognise and Deal with Fear, Burnout & Toxic Culture" with Barb Garrison

Things like burnout and toxic culture at the workplace have become buzz words big time. But much like any good pop culture rumour, words become buzzy for a reason: the actions that inspire them have become all too prevalent.

With us on the show today is the incredible (and most funny) Barb Garrison from Internal Groove: career coach, speaker, author and facilitator helping burned out professionals create relief & freedom.

We brought Barb on because we wanted to explore the concepts and feelings behind those buzzy terms, burnout, fear, toxic management. Knowing how to recognise their emergence in oneself is half the medicine, for it allows us to prevent these states from ever becoming ours. Tune in by finding your favourite podcast player above to learn how to change your career trajectory by:

    • Recognising your body’s signs that you are actually not feeling well (and then finding out why). Ever felt the Sunday shakies because work recommences on Monday?
    • Charting the world around you for potential stressors, their nature and motivations. Ever had a boss that just seemed to make your life hell?
    • Devising counter measures to take the power back. Barb comes jam-packed with practical scenarios and solutions that can help you strategise about how you too can reclaim your spot in the driver’s seat of your career and happiness.

  • Ep 42 - June Special "PRIDE"

    Let’s talk about it!

It is June everybody, and with Pride we march. This is the time of the year when a specific chapter of the minority representation book receives heightened (and deservedly so) attention: The LGBTQ+ community.

There is an infinite amount of wonderful content about the history and culture of this community, its persistent challenges despite all of us being people and sexuality truly not being the thing that makes a person interesting, as well as ways to be an inclusive member of society.

However, today on the HIGHER! Career Podcast, it is our ambition to lend a little wisdom to businesses, business owners, managers and peers on how to insure that you foster a work environment that is rich in representation, low in prejudice, free of bullying and built on merit and cultural enrichment through the candidates you decide to recruit.

This episode is derived from a presentation we did last year for the management team of FMI, a brilliant sales performance agency that invites us to shed some light on what is often an invisible malaise. Make no mistake, you can have a non-inclusive work environment without any of the more visible markers such as corridor gossip and active bullying.

  • Ep 41 - "How to Self-Promote and Get Promoted" with Sinead Sharkey-Steenson

What do you do when you are at the hight of your power and ready for that promotion. Hint: you plan it meticulously.

Today on the show is star guest on walking charm offensive Sinead Sharkey-Steenson, Career Success & Leadership Coach and Director of Generation Women, which focuses on exactly what this show is about: your dream career.

Now what is awesome about Sinead, is that her experience with a demographic particularly challenged when it comes to promotion and self-promotion has allowed her to devise a toolkit applicable to all of us. A toolkit that can teach you:

    • How to properly keep track of your accomplishments and development areas throughout your entire career (entitled: the wall of fabulousness. Which is fabulous).
    • How to self-promote continuously without sounding, or worse, feeling arrogant or entitled.
    • How to strategically plan and tactically deploy your promotion journey within the rules and hierarchies of your organisation.

  • Ep 40 - "How to Beat the Algorithm with Your Job Application" with Michael Yinger

Ever felt like your job applications are not given a fair shake by a set of human eyes? Mind the Applicant Tracking System.

Today with us on the show is the effortlessly brilliant Michael Yinger, COO and Co-Founder at Resume Sieve, an intuitive candidate evaluation platform that fast-tracks resume assessment.

We brought Michael onto the show because we hear all too often, from friends, family, colleagues and listeners, that they feel like their resume is not given the time of day. They matched it perfectly to the job description, jumped through all the hoops modern job application systems have to offer and somehow keep receiving the same old automated "no thanks" email in response.

Michael's career in the field of talent acquisition and human resources has allowed him to peek behind the scenes and tell us what is actually going on.

Most companies nowadays use what is called an Applicant Tracking System. It is a software that pre-screens the deluge of CVs sent their way, filtering for what it believes to be the most worth while for a recruiter or talent acquisition specialist to look at.

As with anything in life, there are positives and negatives to this system and it all depends on whether you speak its language. To learn how, take a listen!

What if career failure wasn't a failure at all, but could be turned into success?

We are sure that almost everyone has been at this point in their lives where the world seems to have stopped: demotion, made redundant, start-up collapsing, an application to the dream job declined.

It sucks, it feels like the end. But as with so many things in life, it is all a matter of perspective, with what kind of eyes you look at the problem at hand.

Today on the show is Arnaud Henneville-Wedholm, tech-start-up person, motivational genius. His super power: failure-to-success magic.

Arnaud is chatting to us about how what seemed like an incredibly successful start-up for 6 years with big investors, eventually failed. And how decided to leverage this failed venture and spin it into a new and even shinier one.

If you love this episode, be sure to check out Arnaud's book "How Hard Can It Be?", which sheds a light on the less glamorous side of running a start-up and how despite the hard-ship you can sail the ship into a safe haven.

Failure. Terrible isn't it, especially when you think about it in terms of your career.

This month on the HIGHER! Career Podcast, we focus our energies on changing our perception of the concept of failure. Rather than considering it something terrible that happens to us, our jobs and our careers, a stopping point, we want to consider it as a stepping off point. Something that is a natural part of life, something that allows us to shift gears, learn, start over, realise our dreams.

Kicking us off is the splendid Duarte Garrido, whose career journey is a wild and wicked and rich roller coaster that took him from academia, to blue collar, back to academia and into the world of corporate (with an intermezzo of 3 months as a global nomad in between). Duarte never stopped to think "all of this is leading nowhere". Instead, he launched himself into the journey and enjoyed the process that sometimes is the unknown and unforeseen. In short: life.

  • Ep 33 - "How to Think about Your Career, Your Passion & Money" with Dan Mangena

Ever wondered how to have a career you care about, stay true to your passion and still manage to make money that doesn't corrupt said passion? Today's guest Dan Mangena is not only a serial entrepreneur, but also one of the most generous fountains of wisdom out there. Tune in to:

    • discover how Dan created and manages multiple income streams that allow for financial stability and pursuit of passion.
    • learn how to move from meditation and search for balance into action.
    • stop the job-shaming. Not everybody has to be an entrepreneur, not everybody has to aspire to senior management positions. Find your own rhythm, one that fits your energy and dreams of what you want your life to feel like.

Dan has a brilliant set of free, affordable and slightly more pricy offers to further your understanding of how you too can live a life of abundance, and we strongly encourage you to visit his homepage and take a look for yourself!

  • Ep 32 - December Special

Today is World Aids Day. Which just so happens to fall on the day after #GivingTuesday. Two incredibly powerful days on the global annual agenda. Two which we dedicate this episode, to raise our voices for solidarity around the globe, share our thrill about progress with you and enjoy a laugh or two right in the face of all the progress we have yet to make.

Special shout-out to ConnectAID, the International Solidarity Network, who advocate tirelessly for the kind of inter-cause thinking that today's World Aids Day is all about. You rock!

Welcome back to Higher! everyone. The podcast full of wicked stories from the job market and experts showing us how to succeed in it. Because we've all been there haven't we, it's time to get unstuck. It's time to make some change. It's time to lead. Let's go get it!

Every now and again we like to do a little something cheeky. This show is about your career, it is about helping you realise your dreams and live the life you want. But here is the kicker: we have a hidden agenda.

You see, we are deeply value-driven people. Nikki is the a powerful advocate for all things diversity, equity and inclusion, specifically for the LGBTQ+ community. Tom is a professional advocate and advisor for sustainable development and transformation of our economy through communications in the private sector and beyond. So every now and again, we reserve an episode just for ourselves. To talk about what's going on in the world. To talk about what moves and shakes us these days. This is that episode.

We want you to realise your own values, and start to stand up for them. But it's hard to do when you're struggling daily to manage your 9-5. Where is the headspace to become vocal about what you care for? That's why this show exists. That's what we are about.

Have a listen, have a laugh, learn a little and have a fabulous day!

  • Ep 31 - "How to Find the Work You Love" with America's Career Coach Ken Coleman

We had the incredible pleasure of interviewing the sensational Ken Coleman, who was generous enough to share some of his prized formula for identifying, attaining and keeping a career that is more than just a job with us. In this episode, we talk about:

    • internal villains that keep us from figuring out what we actually want to do with our lives.
    • the difference between a job, a career and a calling, and why it all matters to begin with.
    • why connecting beats networking eveytime and how to apply it for making a career move.

Ken mentions his brilliant book "From Paycheck to Purpose" a few times throughout the episode, and if you are keen to give it a read (which we strongly recommend), you can find it here.

You can find Ken across all socials through the links below, to stay up to speed with his many and ever-evolving wisdoms:

TwitterInstagramFacebook, and YouTube or at kencoleman.com.
