The recent news of Chartable, an analytics company specializing in podcast advertising, closing has caused a few ripples in the podcast industry. While some are mourning the loss of this tool, others are just learning about the capabilities of these analytics and wanting to know more. We’re here to help cast some light on the situation and how it may impact podcasters, as well as provide some insight into these types of tools.
What’s a Prefix URL Anyway?
A Prefix URL is a trackable URL that’s placed directly in the RSS Feed of a podcast. It allows third-party services, like Chartable, to track all download requests that come through a show’s RSS Feed. (Be careful not to confuse this with a Tracking Pixel!)
For many podcasters, the importance lies in the ability to share the information pulled from the Prefix URL with their advertising partners. Prefix URLs are also platform-agnostic, meaning they typically function on any RSS Feed regardless of where it’s being hosted. The value of Prefix URLs for most podcasters is having another source of data for their show. You can learn more about this value in this article from Sounds Profitable.
What does Chartable Going Away Mean for Me?
If you’re currently using Chartable’s Prefix URL, then it means you’re going to need to find a new one to replace it. For podcasts hosted on RedCircle, we recommend Podscribe, Podtrac, and Podsights (now known as Spotify Ad Analytics). Our platform is already equipped to enable those Prefix URLs with a literal click of a button! (Check out our Help Center for more!)
Chartable is set to close on December 12, 2024. So, podcasters utilizing their services have until that date to find a replacement.
Prefix URLs can be a fantastic addition to your analytic tool belt. Understanding what they can deliver for you and how to implement them is key to unlocking their power. Luckily with RedCircle, you can take full advantage of them with a click of a button!
