There are very few memories of my childhood and the ones I do have are tainted with moments of molestation and alcohol abuse. The adults in my life struggled to make positive choices for our family. Therefore, it was no surprise I ended up like the statics said I would…pregnant at 16, again at 18, and divorced by 21. But that's not where my story ends.
As the host of this show, I ask my guests every week to be vulnerable and transparent. This week I learned just how hard that is to do. I can't thank my two dearest friends, Amelia (episode 15) and Stephanie (episode 9) enough for walking along side me while I sat in the hot seat today.

Thanks to the Great Recession of 2008 they found themselves in a financial funk. And that was just the opening act. During their second decade of business is when things really got ugly and hard decisions had to be made.
In our chat, Jacklin didn't sugarcoat it, saying, "Most marriages wouldn't have survived this." Frankly, I couldn't agree more. It takes a special kind of grit to weather such storms, and most people would've thrown in the towel years earlier.

He was a "Grade A jerk. Selfish. Arrogant.” yet considered himself good enough to go to heaven (at least by the world's standards). He never saw himself as blessed; he only focused on all the bad things in his life like the loss of his mother when he was child, interrupted relationships with his father and siblings, and even his bad health.
That all changed in the shower. One ordinary day Jason was physically brought to his knees in the shower. What happened after that was nothing short of a miracle.
Jason thinks his story won't be enticing to people, but I disagree…I believe it's more relatable than he could ever imagine.

Hearing phrases like "it was God's idea" or " it was time for him to go" after the death of his uncle scared young 9-year-old Matt. It caused him to have an unhealthy fear of God and His authority.
According to Matt's perception, people died, and God did it.
As Matt grew older, his fear of God continued to affect him emotionally and mentally. He felt trapped in a cycle of anxiety, constantly worrying about whether he was doing enough to please God and avoid His supposed wrath. This fear had a profound impact on his life, leading to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, and a constant need for validation. How could he keep hearing "God is good" all the time when all Matt could see was how mean He was.
Matt spent years doing all the good things he could to please God and stay in His good graces. Until he figured out he could never do enough 'good' to please God.

As Barb's mom continued to speak God's promises over her, Barb's rebellious spirit grew stronger. Despite her knowledge that she could always trust in God, her defiance led her down a path of choices that some believed she could never recover from.
Pregnant at 16 and a mom by 17, she was a high school drop out in an abusive relationship, smoking weed, and eventually in jail by the age of 19. Even when she attempted to "do the right thing” Barb seemed to be constantly stumbling. Her journey took her through prerequisite classes for nursing school, only to face rejection, and later expulsion from Respiratory Therapist school.
Frustrated and discouraged, Barb's rebellious personality drove her deeper into the clutches of addiction, particularly to her “drug of choice” meth. Quickly, Barb ended up in a downward spiral of increased IV drug use, more drug-related charges, and more time spent behind bars.
After a 13-year addiction, Barb found herself under a highway bridge in an encounter with a man that would alter the course of her destiny forever.

As a teenager, Agriculture turned out to be Kaci's safe space. She talks about how it not only rescued her but also became the foundation for her personal growth and sense of purpose.
During her senior year of high school, Kaci was engaged and planned to be married shortly after graduation. This idea of marrying so young may seem odd to some but she's often been called an "old soul" and always significantly more mature than her years. But then an accident one early morning changed their entire future.
The accident had a profound impact on Kaci's faith. She candidly discusses her anger at God and the struggle to trust Him after such a heart-wrenching loss. Eventually, she turned 'in to' God instead of away from Him. After a time of mourning, love found its way back into Kaci's life. She shares her apprehensions about opening her heart once more after enduring such heartbreak. Hers is a story of a mended heart and trust.

At a young age, Dakota found himself surrounded by brokenness in the home and bullies at school. In his search for inclusion, he often attended community events including church revivals alone. Throughout his teen years as a local youth pastor poured into him, he continued to hold on to his self-proclaimed freedom. Due to the physical and verbal abuse taking place inside his home, he found himself often asking, "If God is real, why do bad things happen?".
Finally by his senior year, he was living with friends and carving out a better plan for his life which included college, baseball, and becoming a Physical Therapist.
Dakota's plan to steer clear of pastoral roles took an unexpected turn when he volunteered as a youth pastor intern under the guidance of his mentor. This decision marked a turning point that would forever change his life's trajectory. Despite a history of being bullied and doubting his leadership abilities, Dakota found himself consistently sought after for guidance by those around him. A calling on his life became increasingly evident, but he initially resisted, focusing instead on his dreams of a baseball career.
A pivotal moment arrived when a friend posed a simple yet profound question: "What's the point?" This query acted as a catalyst, causing Dakota to reevaluate his priorities. He recognized that his true calling lay in ministry, and he made the difficult decision to let go of his baseball aspirations.
Supported solely by his own determination and without familial backing, Dakota committed wholeheartedly to his newfound path. As a result, he has now dedicated a decade of his life to ministry. Alongside his wife, Shellie, and their three daughters, Dakota continues to embrace opportunities to serve and inspire students. Their journey reflects a resounding commitment to saying "yes" to the callings that resonate with their hearts.

S1E11 - 39m - Aug 29, 2023 - Prison, Aryan brotherhood, a rebellious spirit: Clay's Story
A natural-born rebel, Clay consistently defied authority.
He turned 18 years old in a solitary confinement cell but even 6 weeks alone couldn't change his heart. To him, there was no God, and this gave him full permission to live out his fleshly desires.
Methamphetamines became Clay's drug of choice, regardless of his location or circumstances.
Back in prison by the age of 20 for more drug charges, he realized he was able to 'do time'; survival in a structured environment showcased his adaptability, even though undesirable.
A year later he was once again a free man. For the next 4 years he 'played the game', worked the system, and outsmarted authorities. Addiction to beating the system surpassed the allure of drugs themselves. Eventually, he spent 3 years 'running hard' in full blown addiction, darkness, and self-destruction.
From Clay's perspective, God's presence seemed to wane, pushing him further into darkness.
Finally, God shows up and gets real for Clay at one of the coldest moments of his life after a high-speed police chase on Christmas Eve. Ready to die, consumed with hate, and freezing to death in a field, he began to pray for his daughter, his wife, and his mother, instantly feeling physical and spiritual healing.
One would think all of Clay's poor decisions ended there but unfortunately that's not the case. After many years, eventually Clay experienced God's mercy and grace poured out on him even though he didn't deserve it.
Whether you struggle with addiction, or you love someone who does, there is something in this episode for you. Clay desires for all to know the Man that brought warmth back to his evil spirit and claimed him as His own.
Clay's life story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of faith. From rebellion to redemption, Clay's journey through addiction, survival, and ultimately, divine intervention, provides insights and inspiration for anyone struggling with similar challenges. Stephanie's early life was marked by instability due to her parents' divorce and remarriages, leading to frequent changes in her living situation and schooling. These circumstances prevented her from forming deep and lasting friendships and deprived her of a stable motherly influence during crucial developmental years. The absence of a nurturing environment led her down a path of seeking acceptance and love through harmful means, including drugs and unhealthy relationships.
Amidst this chaos, Stephanie's encounter with a life-threatening situation led her to turn to seek a connection with God. Her journey towards faith was gradual, and her persistence in asking for signs from God was met with a literal sign. Stephanie's commitment to pursuing a relationship with God prompted her to make positive changes in her life, distancing herself from toxic relationships and habits. A significant move to a new city marked a turning point, providing her with fresh opportunities and a chance to start anew.
As she began to rebuild her life, Stephanie found herself mirroring the struggles of another person close to her – a girlfriend dealing with an unhappy marriage. The seed of bitterness grew roots in her heart, and she found every reason to justify her request for a divorce. Until the Holy Spirit woke her in the middle of the night and gave her a different message. Through the stories and love of others who have walked where they were walking, Stephanie realized the transformative power of forgiveness, and faith in healing her own marriage.
As she was celebrating a redeemed love for her husband and the God she could never turn her back on, another blow to the gut caused her to shake her fist and question the very being she had built her foundation on.
Stephanie's life story is one of resilience, redemption, and the profound impact of faith. Her journey from a tumultuous childhood marked by instability and unhealthy coping mechanisms to a life of purpose, forgiveness, and healing serves as an inspiration to others who may be facing their own struggles. Stephanie's story is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is hope for transformation and renewal through a steadfast connection to hope.
After the recording, Stephanie realized she forgot to mention her commitment to Jesus was further celebrated through her baptism, symbolizing her obedience to the calling of the Holy Spirit. Additionally, her father's battle with alcoholism ended in victory through a personal relationship with Jesus. She now has a healthy relationship with both of her parents and gives all the credit to God.

Libby Gandy's childhood seems to be right out of a Norman Rockwell painting with loving parents that encouraged their children to explore all the world had to offer. Gifted with a beautiful voice, it was only natural that everything in her life would revolve around music, including her marriage.
After college, Libby and her husband loaded up on the tour bus and hit the road, sharing their passion for God and music to anyone that would listen. After 17 years, 2 children, and 3 dogs, they finally decided to put some roots down just outside of Nashville, TN opening up possibilities to continue their life in the music business.
Unfortunately, that lifestyle proved, once again, it's no place to raise a family or have a healthy marriage. Libby soon found herself all alone with 2 small children and no clear picture for her future.
As always, though, God showed up and she was able to lead herself and children on a healing journey full of love and forgiveness.

Charley Rose is an 'old soul'; mature at an early age and saying big words long before her playmates. She enjoyed an incredible, perfect childhood full of innocence and love.
So what could possibly lead this role model and Homecoming Queen to bury her emotions with an eating disorder? How did this very confident young lady find herself concerned with what others thought about her and eventually spending 5 years at rock bottom with alcohol and drugs? As a 2020 high school graduate impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Charley found her boredom and curiosity leading her down a dangerous path of lies, ignoring all the warning signs, while chasing instant gratification.
Then one summer without distractions, she found herself back home rediscovering the pure joy of being with her family. Even though she couldn’t sleep at night knowing God was pursuing her, Charley couldn’t shake her hesitations about fully committing herself to becoming God’s daughter. Being ‘all in’ required a leap of faith she wasn’t quite ready for.
Finally, after a strong desire to rekindle a relationship with one of the most influential people in her life, a sleepover with an old high school friend, and a spontaneous visit to camp led her towards discovering the true essence of TRUTH and LOVE.
"I finally quit thinking and obeyed; and that was the change."

When Josh's family abruptly moved to Argentina, his life took a tumultuous turn. Returning to Oklahoma left him feeling lonely and like an outsider in his once very familiar community. As the repercussions of his actions jeopardized a football scholarship, God intervened and presented him with an opportunity to attend a ministry college, revealing the life that awaited him; a life filled with purpose and destiny.
Josh’s story is all about understanding that the life you see on the outside is not the life people experience on the inside. When we surrender to God, it doesn’t mean our lives will become picture perfect. Experiencing God’s salvation means having Him by our side through every step of our life journey, and trusting that he will get us through our toughest moments.
Today I’m excited to share Josh’s story with you, because while his story is unique, there are so many people who can relate to his spiritual journey. Now that he’s a youth pastor, Josh wholeheartedly believes that every step he took in his life was necessary to bring about a transformation in the lives of the young people in his community.

From a young age, Donna had this powerful inner belief of a special calling on her life; the issue was that she wasn’t quite sure what that calling actually looked like.
Even with that uncertainty, Donna had this unwavering sense of purpose in the church even without a ‘church home’.. She knew deep down that her path was destined to be different from others.
With an unwavering heart, she followed God to a Christian university, hoping this is where she would find her purpose in His plan. When things came crumbling down around her, Donna confided in God. In that vulnerable moment, God revealed to her that He wanted to be her everything, surpassing all else. It was through this revelation that she discovered her true calling in God’s plan.
Today I have the privilege of sharing Donna’s incredible story with you. From her challenging upbringing, a career ending injury, on top of searching for a place to belong, God was tactfully planning her path and guiding her to where she is now. It’s a journey that will leave you inspired and amazed.

Rachel is an energetic light that brightens every room with her contagious smile and laugh. It’s impossible to be in a bad mood when in her presence. However, behind her confident exterior, you would never guess the heartache, trials and tribulations she’s experienced. Rachel has walked through times of hardship that most people could not imagine. Through cancer, a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and her most recent hurdle in 2020 when she faced paralysis, Rachel wholeheartedly believes her tribulations were arranged to bring salvation to others.
Through Rachel’s story, we learn that even after experiencing salvation with God, we are not exempt from life’s trials. It’s when we’re past those trials that we realize how those very struggles can spark transformations in the lives of others, and even in our own journey of growth.
If nothing else, Rachel wants us to know that Jesus will never let us walk alone. Today I’m honored to share Rachel’s inspiring story with you. It’s the story of how she accepted Jesus as her Savior at a young age, how she remained faithful despite many roadblocks, and how Jesus helped her navigate the frightening medical battles she faced.
