• Bobbi Fosbury Ell...Type 2 Diabetes, A1c of 17.8 down to 6.3(!!!!), Daily Faster, No More Meds, Incredible Story!

Wow! How exciting to start off the year with such an impactful interview! Bobbi was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in October 2021 with an A1c of 17.8. Right away, she knew that she needed to make some major changes. She immediately cut out sugar and adopted a low-carb diet. Then, in January 2023, she found intermittent fasting. Also, around that time, she met her now partner, Keith. Keith is a big influence in the intermittent fasting community and he helped her to adopt this lifestyle. Through diet and IF, Bobbi has been able to get her A1c down to 6.3, which is just amazing. In addition, she has been able to lose around 50lbs. Just an incredible story! I hope you enjoy it!

  • End of Year Update...Ozempic Update, Changes to my Fasting Schedule, New Pump Algorithm (iAPS - Loving it!), + Battling Sugar (Again)

This will be the final episode of the year and I just wanted to give you an update on a few things that have been going on my life. First, I have been on Ozempic for ~10 or 11 weeks at this point and I'll give you an update on my impressions of it to date. Second, I'll update you on my fasting protocol, which has changed largely due to the impact of Ozempic. Third, I am trying out a new algorithm for my diabetes management, called iAPS (Apple (i) Artificial Pancreas System). I haven't been using it for very long but I already like it very much. Lastly, I've been battling sugar (yet again!) Maybe some of you can relate to this... I'll be back next year with more episodes!

  • Sarah Erkel Grace...No Sugar for >2 Years + Fasts to Maintain Health and Better BGs...Very Impressive!

Sarah has a great story and so much of it resonated deeply with me. If you are struggling to cut sugar out of your diet or if you are in the early stages of insulin resistance, don't miss this episode! After struggling with sugar addiction, Sarah decided that she needed to make some major lifestyle changes, which included cutting sugar and fasting regularly. While Sarah was never technically diagnosed with pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes, at a health check a few years ago, she had a borderline high fasting insulin level. In addition, through wearing a CGM, she saw that her BGs could go quite high after meals. The insulin resistance she was experiencing alarmed her and she promptly made lifestyle changes to prevent the insulin resistance from worsening. Ultimately, Sarah was successful at cutting sugar, improving her overall diet, and incorporating fasting into her routine. Very impressive!

  • Josh Bostick is Back! T1D for less than 2 years, 4.8 A1C (!!!), lost ~40lbs, dedicated faster!

What a pleasure it was to catch up with Josh! While Josh is less than two years into his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis (30 years old), he has mastered his blood sugar management. His last A1c was 4.8! He attributes much of his success to fasting, which we discussed in depth. He continues to use fasting to ensure that all of his insulin settings are correct. Additionally, fasting has greatly helped him with exercise. Interestingly, after we spoke the last time, he experienced a delayed honeymoon period. He was initially confused by the lower insulin needs but, upon discussing these changes with his endocrinologist, he realized what was going on. Upon coming out of the honeymoon, he was able to use fasting to get his settings back to the right spot. Lastly, Josh has been able to lose around 40 pounds from a starting weight of 207. All in all, fasting has completely transformed his life and he is very passionate about sharing what he has learned with others. It's so great to hear from someone that is doing so well!

  • Diabetes Sucks Update...My initial experiences with Ozempic and birth control...

Thank you all so much for your outpouring of support after my "Diabetes Sucks" episode a few weeks ago. While I haven't totally reversed my insulin resistance, I have been able to improve it. I suspect the cause of my insulin resistance is hormone related as I believe I am entering peri-menopause (I'm 43 years old). To counteract the insulin resistance, I have started on a birth control pill (Slynd) to regulate my cycle and Ozempic to improve insulin sensitivity. While neither is a magic bullet, they have helped. Thanks again for all of your support - it really means a lot to me!

  • Adam Burns and Nyree Krikorian...Couple that Fasts! He has Type 1 and she has reversed pre-diabetes...great example of fasting teamwork!

What a treat it was to speak to Adam and Nyree! They have been married for 33 years and are such a great example of a couple working well together to achieve their goals.

Adam has had Type 1 diabetes for the last 35 years and adopted a keto diet several years ago. He has since super charged his blood sugar management by adding fasting to his routine. Adam's last A1C was 5.6, which is very impressive. His wife, Nyree, was recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes, which was no surprise to her given her family history and her experience with gestational diabetes. Since finding fasting, she has been able to reverse her pre-diabetes without the use of medication, and greatly improve her blood sugars. In addition, both of them have lost weight, which was a secondary but welcome side effect of fasting.

I loved speaking to both of them and hearing their stories at what is the beginning of their fasting journeys. I will continue to track them over time and hope to have them back on in the future. It was really a pleasure getting to know both of them!

  • Randi Wipf...T1D that does ADF with Daily Injections, lots of discussion on the struggles of T1D and fasting...

I like Randi because she keeps it real. We all struggles as T1Ds to do many things, fasting included. Randi has had diabetes for 17 years and came to fasting about a year ago for both weight loss and better control over her blood sugars. After starting with a more relaxed protocol, Randi's fasting has now evolved into alternate day fasting. She also does multiple daily injections, which adds another layer of complexity to her fasting protocol. We dive deep on how she manages her insulin needs while doing longer fasts and we also talk about the struggles we all face as Type 1 diabetics. While Randi is making progress, she still has weight loss and A1C goals that she'd like to achieve. I have no doubt that she will reach her goals. Randi was a joy to speak with and she was incredibly honest. I hope you get a lot out of her episode!

  • Diabetes Sucks...My story of extreme insulin resistance, terrible blood sugars, and unavoidable weight gain...

Sorry to be a downer but I owe it to you to be real. This past week has been terrible for me diabetes-wise. All of my settings seem to be wrong and I am forced to eat around the clock. As a result, I have gained 6 pounds in 1 week (ARGH!!!!). I have no idea how this will turn around but I wanted to give you a window into the struggle that I am facing currently. Maybe you are going through the same thing. I think it helps for all of us to know that we are not alone.

  • Tracey Vignovich...Reversed T2 Diabetes, Lost 57 lbs, and greatly improved health thru CLEAN Fasting!

It was such a treat to speak to Tracey! She was so generous with the details of her story. After struggling with her weight for most of her adult life, Tracey received a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes in 2019. However, she was determined not to go on medication. She tried various methods to lose weight and become more healthy. Nothing seemed to stick until she found clean fasting. Once she began clean fasting, the weight began to drop off and her A1c improved in a sustained way. Now, she's down 57 lbs (197 to 140lbs) and her A1c went from 6.4 at its highest down to 5.4 currently!

Tracey shares a lot of good information about her mindset through her struggles and ultimate success with clean fasting. What a compelling story! I hope you enjoy it!

  • Ginger Vieira (T1D) is back with an Ozempic update (9 months on it)! Lots of insights on insulin needs, weight, hunger, etc!

Ginger (Type 1) was last on the podcast in February and, at that time, we primarily discussed her usage of Metformin. When her February episode came out, she was using both Metformin and Ozempic (newly started) to control her dawn phenomenon and improve insulin sensitivity. She continues to use both drugs and has developed a good understanding of how they work in her body. I thought it would make sense to have her back on to get an update on how things are going for her as she now has 9 months of Ozempic under her belt. Even if you are not a Type 1, I think you find this episode to be extremely informative. We discuss in depth such topics as other similar drugs to Ozempic (Wegovy, Trulicity, Mounjaro), weight loss, hunger while on these drugs, and insulin needs over time, etc.

In addition to discussing Ozempic, we talk about low blood sugars (how to avoid over treating them) and her new book on exercise and Type 1 Diabetes (see link below).

    Enjoy!

  • Roxi Moreno...Reversed Pre-Diabetes thru Fasting, 4+ years of IF, Clean Fast Proponent, Prominent Member of the IF Community!

You may recognize Roxi's name and that's because she is a huge part of the intermittent fasting community. She is one of the moderators for both the Delay, Don't Deny Facebook group and Gin Stephens' off Facebook group (https://www.ginstephens.com/community.html). Roxi has a fascinating story. She reversed her pre-diabetes through fasting alone. Her A1c started at 6.1 in January 2019 and she steadily lowered it to 4.7 by May 2020. After doing fasting for around a year, she gradually changed her diet to incorporate more whole foods and fewer carbs.

She is also a huge proponent of the clean fast and we discuss this quite a bit. We also talk a lot about alternate day fasting and whether it's right for you. Roxi runs Meal-Less Mondays on Gin's off Facebook community so she's quite experienced with down days.

Additionally, Roxi has lost quite a bit of weight. She started around 200lbs and is now back to her high school weight of +/- 160lbs. She's been fasting for 4 years and discusses how she keeps on track.

If you want to follow Roxi, check her out on Instagram @fastingrox.

It was a pleasure to speak to Roxi - I hope you enjoy the episode!

  • Rachel Blaising...T1D for 36 Years, Lots of Discussion around Insulin Resistance When Breaking Your Fast, VERY INFORMATIVE!

I'm so pleased to have had the opportunity to speak to Rachel. We dive deep on an issue that many T1Ds face, which is high blood sugars when breaking your fast. Rachel has been fasting for six months and was initially plagued with very high blood sugars when she would break her fast. After tinkering with her insulin (Humalog to Lyumjev), eating window, and ultimately, adding Metformin to her regimen, she has devised a strategy that works well for her. Insulin resistance can be a sneaky issue that you may not be aware that you have. This episode is definitely worth a listen if you are finding blood sugars to be difficult to manage in your eating window.

In addition, Rachel has a very interesting story, and I love the methodical way that she approaches her T1D management! Enjoy!

I cut sugar three months ago and artificial sweeteners a month ago and it hasn't been easy! BUT, I'm glad I did it. • Tami Durcan...Fasting over 3 years, Reversed Pre-Diabetes, Lost ~40 lbs, Post-Menopausal...Tons of great insights!

Tami is incredible! After receiving a diagnosis of pre-diabetes in late 2019, Tammy set out to reverse her diabetes without the use of medication. Shortly after receiving her diagnosis, she found intermittent fasting and has never looked back!

Since Tami has been at this for such a long time, we got into a lot of detail about her fasting protocol and how it has evolved over time. We discussed some of the shifts in mindset that have occurred throughout her journey.

Within six months of receiving her diagnosis, Tami was able to bring her A1c down from 6.2 to 5.5. Since that time, she has continued to lower her A1c and, at her last check up, it was 4.9!

Also, since Tami is now post-menopausal, we discuss issues relating to weight gain and menopause. Spoiler alert - weight gain during and post-menopause is NOT INEVITABLE!

Tami was an open book and she provided a lot of very valuable information. I really hope you enjoy this interview!

  • Dr. Vera Tarman...The AUTHORITY on Food Addiction! What it is, how to treat it, and the role of fasting!

What a privilege it was to speak to Dr. Tarman! She is the leading authority on food addiction. We cover a variety of topics in this podcast. Importantly, Dr. Tarman defines what food addiction is so that you can identify it within yourself, if you feel that this may be applicable to you. We also discuss how food addiction is treated. Spoiler alert... treatment for food addiction and reversing Type 2 diabetes through diet are accomplished in the much same way. Additionally, since this is a podcast about fasting, we discuss the role that fasting may have for someone that is also dealing with food addiction.

You will definitely come away from this episode with a much better understanding of food addiction. However, since this podcast is only one hour and the field of food addiction is so broad, I highly recommend that you check out Dr. Tarman's book (Food Junkies), podcast (Food Junkies), Facebook page (Sugar-Free for Life: I'm Sweet Enough), and website (addictionsunplugged.com) for many more resources.

  • Catching up with Sue Fischer...Reversed T2D, Maintaining Weight and Non-Diabetic A1C, Lots of Great Updates!

Sue was last on the podcast in March 2022. Her initial episode has been one of the most popular episodes of the podcast. I think a lot of people resonate with her story both for the incredible way she reversed her Type 2 diabetes and lost 100 pounds. I was thrilled at the opportunity to catch up with Sue to see how things have been going for her. Sue thrives on consistency and has been able to maintain both her weight and healthy A1Cs over the last year. While her year has not been without challenges, she has pushed through any issues she has faced and has continued on with her lifestyle. She is an inspiration to me and many others. I hope you enjoy this update episode!
