54m | Mar 24, 2023 - #110: Fitness & Business Lessons from Raise the Bar
A few weeks ago I attended the Raise the Bar Fitness & Business Conference, and learned a TON. Also had an amazing time, met so many incredible people and made so many amazing connections. As the overarching theme of the podcast being to connect fitness lessons to the rest of life suggests, I thought it fitting to summarize some of the big takeaways from the conference, and “translate” them into lessons you can use in the gym.
If you’re a trainer or fitness professional listening to this episode, I HIGHLY recommend you attend the conference next year. I was so excited to finally be able to go this year and I’m so glad that I did. If you have any more detailed questions about it, please feel free to send me a message and I’m happy to chat about my experience.
These events are extremely valuable, and feel like pivotal career and personal development moments. I hope some of the lessons learned here impact you as much as they’ve impacted me.

36m | Mar 21, 2023 - #109: Angela Gargano on How to Get Better at Pullups and Training to be a Ninja
Angela Gargano (@angela_gargano) is a fierce athlete, coach, international fitness model, and speaker. She’s competed 4x (soon to be 5!) on American Ninja Warrior, won the title of Miss Fitness America in 2016, and has coached over 500 women to conquer pull-ups with her Pull-Up Revolution online program.
Angela is basically the Oprah of pullups “you get a pullup! You get a pullup! Everyone gets a pullup!!!”. Pull-ups are one of those exercises that everyone knows, but very few people can actually do. Now just because it’s difficult, that doesn’t make it impossible, and Angela has proven this time and time again. We spoke about her 8 steps to getting a pull-up and some common cues and tips to help, as well as what you might want to avoid.
Angela and I connected shortly before recording this episode at the Raise the Bar Fitness & Business conference. We noticed we both wore Oura rings and discussed the different ways we both use it and benefit from it. Amongst all other recovery things, the ring has excellent menstrual cycle tracking and so Angela spoke about that as well, and how she uses it to dictate her training and recovery.
We also spoke briefly about a handful of other topics from mindset, to Ninja training, to just making fitness fun. Be sure to follow Angela on IG and check out her website for programs, coaching, freebies and tons of information.

38m | Mar 9, 2023 - #108: Dr. Joe Baker on The Tyranny of Talent and Creating Athletes for Life
Dr. Joe Baker (@bakerjyorku) is the author of The Tyranny of Talent and a professor at York University in Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Baker was one of my professors from my undergraduate degree, and while I may not remember all of the course material, I have always held a few lessons from his courses very close to me.
We discussed what talent is, how we might define it, and what some of the implications of its misuse are. Talent is a REALLY hard thing to identify, and it turns out we as humans aren’t really that good at it. But the implications of the missed identification of talent have far-reaching impact that go well beyond sport.
This conversation, and the book, do a great job of helping us to understand how we might better apply our understandings of talent and athlete development, to keep youth in sports for longer, and ultimately create athletes for life, well into adulthood.
Follow Dr. Baker on Twitter, and be sure to pick up a copy of the Tyranny of Talent.

Dr. Kevin Marryshow (@drkev_hybrid) is a licensed chiropractor and medical acupuncturist at Myodetox, a movement health clinic operating 13 locations across Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto. As a Myodetox founding team member since 2015, Kevin's passion for holistic health and his in-depth understanding of the body have earned him notoriety within the physical health industry, allowing him the opportunity to treat NBA, NFL, NCAA, and Olympic athletes of the highest caliber.
This was an excellent conversation with great insight into all that goes in to being an excellent movement guide. It goes far beyond knowing the anatomy, physiology and the science - the true magic is in treating the human being. Kevin was a pleasure to speak with and learn about some of the behind the scenes work that goes into creating an impactful company like Myodetox.
Additionally, we spoke about some of Kevin’s other projects, namely Mindsets which is a physical and mindfulness wellness program designed for incarcerated youth on remand in the Greater Toronto Area. Movement health truly can be at the center of all healing.

Jeff Byers is the Co-Founder and CEO of Momentous. A company that provides world-class performance and health solutions for high-performance seekers at all levels. They’ve partnered with leading experts across the board in health and science to provide some of the highest quality supplements and products to the masses. To name a few: Andrew Huberman, Louisa Nicole, Kelly Starrett, Andy Galpin… and the list goes on.
Jeff played college football at USC where he was also a two-time captain, before a 4 year NFL career. He co-founded Momentous to make the highest quality supplements and sports nutrition and guidance widely available to people like you and I.
We spoke a lot about various supplements, how to evaluate the quality and how to think about what you may want to use. We referenced several Huberman Lab podcasts in this episode (again, they are part of Momentous’ expert advisory team) where he spoke in far more scientific detail about supplements: sleep, supplements, alcohol.

This podcast was all about Matt’s journey and the lessons he’s learned. These lessons can be applied to fitness directly, as an extension, the rest of life - it’s all the same.

1h 2m | Feb 1, 2023 - #103: 5 Tips to Make Every Workout, a Great Workout
Do you ever have those days in the gym where you “just don’t have it”? Wouldn’t it be great to have less of those? That’s what I covered in this episode.
Of course, you cannot control every variable and even if you optimize everything you will still have bad days. But these should be few and far between. There are some straightforward things you can and should be doing to make it so.
Better workouts more often will mean better results in a shorter amount of time. I can’t think of a single person who wouldn’t want that…
None of these tips are magic, and they do require at least some effort on your part. But I promise they will help, IF you use them.

31m | Jan 25, 2023 - #102: Dr. Phil Wagner on Helping the World Move Better with Sparta Science
Dr. Phil Wagner (@DrPhilWagner) is the CEO and Founder of Sparta Science, a Movement Health Intelligence company dedicated to helping the world move better.
Sparta Science is taking a macro-level approach to assessing movement and designing targeted training programs to make improvements. Using force plate technology and tests that cannot be gamed, they are able to gather WAY more data than the human eye can register. This data is then used to determine movement inefficiencies, evaluate training protocols, direct injury rehab, and much more.
We discussed some of the gaps in the micro approach to movement assessment - where a trainer or practitioner would take a client through a series of movements, and “score” them in such a way that might dictate weakness, injury, etc. Sparta Science’s technology takes the ambiguity out of this assessment, which would lead to more efficiency for practitioners, and better outcomes for patients/clients.
We also dove into some of the overwhelming data that wearable technology provides, and gave some insights on how to best utilize it. Data is helpful, but we’ve got to know what to do with it!
Be sure to check out the Sparta Science website and follow along on Twitter for updates @SpartaScience. You can also find Dr. Phil Wagner on Twitter @drphilwagner.

Sarah Morgan is the Head of Nutrition Innovation at Rootine and spent 15 years in clinical practice working to combine genetics, biomarkers, lab testing, and nutrition innovation to empower her patients by infusing her passion for nutrition into holistic human health.
This was an incredible conversation about how to evaluate and manage stress using tools that are readily available to all of us. It starts by understanding what stress actually is; the physiology as well as the real-life events that trigger it. From this place of understanding, we then can begin to adopt behaviours to best manage it. Sarah does an incredible job of breaking this down for us.

37m | Dec 26, 2022 - #97: How to Not Get Fat for Christmas (Holiday Fitness Guide 2022)
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
This time of year is always a challenge for keeping up with health and fitness, but it doesn’t have to be. I outlined some simple ways to do the best “damage control” as possible this holiday season.
The reality is that you’re going to eat and drink too much, and that’s ok. But the trick is not letting this get the better of you and really setting you back.
I listed 5 strategies to implement right now that will help you stay on track through the holidays.
One of the biggest is having an exit strategy as to what you’re going to do after the holidays, and I stressed the importance of having that plan in place now.
If you are tired of struggling to lose weight, or gain strength in the gym, apply for 1 on 1 online coaching with me. But the catch is that you need to start now. Don’t wait until the “right time” the right time to start preparing is now, so let’s get into it!

Anthony Kunkel (@anthonykunkel) is a runner, and a “restless biohacker nerd”. He lives a life dedicated to training and exploring what works, what doesn’t, and how to do it all better. He aims to use his athletic endeavors and achievements to push the dialogue forward in all other aspects of life.
Anthony and I connected through the Wukiyo brand. We had a great discussion on how one can learn life lessons through training. And specifically, the hard and dedicated type of training that Anthony does.
There’s a lot to learn in this conversation if you really pay attention. The tangible advice on running and recovery, coming back from injuries and general performance advice Anthony shared is extremely valuable, but I challenge you to look for more in this.

1h 15m | Dec 8, 2022 - #94: Taylor Morgan on Living by The Captain’s Code to Make Thriving, Standard
Taylor “The Captain” Morgan (@captain_taylor_morgan) is a modern day pirate who is fighting to restore balance and #MakeThrivingStandard through optimizing men’s health, productivity, and masculine energy. He is rebelling against the made up laws of society, standing up to the status quo, and rejecting mediocrity. He has rewritten the rules to live a happy, healthy, and productive life as a man using The Captain’s Code.
Have you ever thought about what “average” is? Yikes. To raise the average quality of life overall, everything has to be upgraded. And this is largely what this podcast is about. Taylor has taken on the identity of a modern day pirate - which we discussed as an interesting note to history - and has developed The Captain’s Code, an acronym which describes the fundamentals of what you can do to improve your life overall.
This was a motivating conversation that should leave you with the desire to strive for more in your life. A common theme throughout many podcast conversations has been the idea that you must be in control of your own life, and especially your own health. And this episode highlighted that and gave many actionable tips as to how you can start to do that TODAY.

1h 12m | Nov 30, 2022 - #93: Clayton Kim on Using AI Technology to Optimize Health and Performance with Fount
Clayton Kim is the COO of Fount, a company focused on creating the most comprehensive and customized health and performance programs in the world, using AI technology and expert coaches. Clayton is a problem solver - whether that be for coaching athletes in aerial straps, or using data science to develop comprehensive AI systems, he’s always looking for ways to improve the thing which he is working on.
There is a distinctly human element to coaching of any kind that cannot be totally replaced by a machine. However, what if we could use AI to replace a lot of the “busy work” a coach has to do, so that they can free up time to use their uniquely human skills to help more people? This is what Clayton is building with Fount. We discussed the ins and outs of how this is possible, and how it all blends together.
Fount has also recently released a product called FlyKitt. FlyKitt is another unique AI/human blend approach to eliminating jet lag. Turns out, jet lag isn’t necessary. And given the correct information, tools, and guidance, it can be eliminated almost entirely. Clayton and I spoke about how this system would work, as well as some simple rules-of-thumb anyone can follow.

Dr. Jack Jeng (@JackJeng) is the Chief Medical Officer of Hone Health, a modern men's health platform that offers personalized care with data driven insights, licensed physician consultations, and medications, all from home.
There is a crisis of low testosterone levels across the population that is not spoken about nearly enough. Current testosterone levels are significantly lower than generations past, and this is affecting ALL aspects of health. You may have heard of “TRT” as something guys use to get bigger in the gym - this is the least exciting and impactful effect of hormone therapy.
In this conversation Jack explains all the ways in which low testosterone is negatively affecting our collective health. He expands upon some of the reasons why, which are a mixed bag of behavioural, environmental, and genetic causes.
Most importantly, he offers some possible solutions. From optimizing your lifestyle all the way up to utilizing modern science via HRT (hormone replacement therapy), there are ways we can curb this crisis.
This could potentially have massive positive downstream effects on the health care system at large, which we also discussed.
Hone Health is a service that makes these therapies available, totally remotely. From testing, consultation, and ongoing support - you can do it all from your home for better, and more affordable service.
