Creative Conversations with No Strings

Guest Host, Dr. Kari Seeley takes us behind the curtain for the upcoming production of ARK, written by JW Smith and presented by No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability in association with Adelaide Festival Centre. This episode features interviews with playwright, JW Smith, Cast Member, Patrick Suto, as well as AC Arts students who are working on set design and build for this production and Casey Van Sebille, the Head of Design at Adelaide College of the Arts, with original music composed by Pedro Fiuza.

Before joining No Strings, Kari worked in broadcast media(radio and TV) in Australia and overseas.. Apparently, she was born talking and over the years has refined that to an artform (according to her Dad)! While leading the day-to-day operations at No Strings, Kari completed her doctorate in 2023, with a focus on the End-user Experience of Audio Description for Live Performance. Her post-grad studies brought together Kari’s love of live performance and her passion for disability access. In her ‘spare’ time Kari is also a professional Audio Describer, often working with Access2Arts here in Adelaide and occasionally taking gigs interstate and even overseas.

Oslo Rogers has a very fun mum called Ruthy, and lives in a very fun town called Mellingong. But now a very unfun problem (called a big approaching storm) is forcing everyone to head for The Clondike, the big town hall on the hill.

And they can only take a few important things each: ‘love luggage’, Ruthy calls it. And she’s a milk-lady, and owns a milk-float, and those can hold lots of love luggage… if you pack them right. So Oslo sets out to help the people of Mellingong, and to discover the things they love the most – the things you would save from a storm.

Dead Darling Theatre is a newly formed female and queer-led production company based in South Australia. We are driven by a mission to champion bold, intersectional storytelling and build genuinely inclusive spaces for artists, especially women, LGBTQIA+ creators, and artists with disabilities.

Rooted in accessibility and equity, our practice prioritises open casting and participation, deliberately engaging underrepresented voices and challenging traditional power dynamics in theatre-making.

Amelia Rooney is an autistic composer and writer based in Adelaide, South Australia with a deep passion for music, film, theatre, and accessible arts. Her debut play, BIMBO (2021-2023), received the Holden Street Theatres Fringe Award following its sold-out season in 2023. Amelia’s theatre music credits include WHORE Dir. Hannah Smith (2024), Dance Nation Dir. Hannah Smith (2024), and SHOCK OF THE NEW IN ADELAIDE Dir. Chris Drummond (2025), as well as film scoring credits CRUSH Dir. Hannah Smith (2023), and Nightfall Dir. Myles McEwen and Ripley Stevens, winning Best Feature Film at Bloody Mirror Horror Film Festival (2024-2025). Their professional debut, THE TREES ARE TURNING OFF!, was commissioned by Chamber Music Adelaide in collaboration with UniSA’s MOD. in response to their Installation Forever (2025). Through the Next Level Creative Mentorship Program with Access2Arts, Amelia underwent working on devising a new, breakthrough play with mentorship from State Theatre Company South Australia’s Petra Kalive and Shannon Rush (2025). Amelia is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) and a Bachelor of Music (Sonic Arts) at the Elder Conservatorium University of Adelaide.

Hannah Smith is an emerging director and producer based in Adelaide. Growing up in Murray Bridge, she was driven to create opportunities within the local theatre community, founding her own production company at fourteen and producing multiple independent productions.

Her passion for theatre led her to pursue further studies in Technical Production at the Adelaide College of the Arts, and a Bachelor of Performance (Honours) at Flinders University in Directing. Alongside her studies, Hannah teaches Performance Academy at Adelaide Theatre Academy and is the Youth Theatre Coordinator at Murray Bridge Players and Singers Inc.

Hannah has contributed to major arts festivals, including the Adelaide Fringe and the Festival of Ideas. Her directing credits include Bumming with Jane (2020/2021), The Book of Everything (2023), Jumpers for Goalposts (2023), WHORE (2024), Dance Nation (2024/2025), First Love Is the Revolution (2025), Unmothered (2025), and Medea in Exile (2025) . Additionally, she has directed short films, including King. (2022), CRUSH (2023),SYNERGY (2023), and SUPERORDINARY (2024). She has undertaken secondments with State Theatre Company of South Australia on Eureka Day, Dir. Rosalba Clemente (2021), and Kimberly Akimbo, Dir. The famous hymn "It Is Well with My Soul," written by Horatio Spafford, has inspired our stage musical, and we are bringing honest portrayals of unimaginable loss, and enduring faith to the 2026 Fringe season.

Andrew has been involved in community theatre for 20 years, majority with the Murray Bridge Players & Singers, stage managing his first musical in 2006 at the age of 13! He has since gone on to play a hand in almost every aspect of a production across a number of other theatre companies including Kapunda Musical Society, GreenWall Studio, South Coast Choral and Arts Society, St. Jude's Players, and currently Maytide Theatre Company!

The Whale tells the story of a morbidly obese English teacher who hides from the world.

Annabel Whitford is a dedicated theatre enthusiast who has stage-managed several productions and serves as the Administrator of the Theatre Guild. An avid tap dancer, Annabel is part of the Dragonfly Dance performing company and believes in the importance of supporting the arts in all its forms. In her spare time, she co-hosts and edits the occasional podcast and has been fortunate enough to interview television writers and producers. Whether working behind the scenes, tapping out rhythms, or discussing TV shows, Annabel is committed to contributing to and promoting the arts community.

Simon Woods’ first play Hansard, had an impressive debut and sold out season at The National Theatre UK in 2019.

Stirling Players will be presenting the Australian premiere under the direction of Sally Putnam and two of Adelaide’s most experienced actors, Anita Canala and Andrew Clark.

Hansard is an intimate and intense domestic drama about a marriage. It is also a comedy about politics, identity and the failings of the ruling class told with witty sarcasm and much passive aggression between a long-married couple of differing political views.

A prim Tory MP (Robin Hesketh) and his liberal, bohemian wife (Diana) quarrel and exchange witty barbs in their Cotswold cottage. The year is 1988 and Robin has arrived home from Westminster after voting for an important piece of legislation in Maggie Thatcher’s government. The subject of the new law and his role in helping it pass is the source of conflict and shared anguish and is integral to the deeply emotional and heart-rending reveal at the end.

The title, ‘Hansard’ refers to the transcripts of parliamentary debates in Britain and Commonwealth countries, including Australia. This play presents us with another verbatim record of a more personal and compelling debate.

This episode features one of the original compositions, a track titled, 'Her Heart Magic Moment'.

'Almost, Maine' has been an exciting opportunity for our Assistant Director and Production Manager to collaborate on original music. The direction was to enhance and complement the plot and emotions on display and create a sound design for each love story. With piano, acoustic guitar and strings, Toby and April have created musical motifs and themes which unite all the scenes but give each vignette its own musical 'stamp'.

April Strevens, Production Manager and composer. April has been involved in music, theatre, film and the fine arts for many years.

April says: "utilising music as a uniting tie between the various storylines of Almost, Maine was an important element to balance in composing the score. Altering melody, rhythm, and composition allowed us to connect the story whilst building different tones appropriate to the varying depictions of love throughout."

SUMMARY

A sensation in London and New York, this is one of the funniest and most inventive plays by Britain's grand master of comedy.

A hilarious satire of television and a touching romantic comedy, it begins in a television studio where a hospital soap opera is being taped. One actor starts speaking gibberish; he is an "actoid" a robot and his programming is off kilter.

Adam, the young nephew of the producer and an aspiring writer who worships the director (once a great movie director and now a broken down has been), is on the set. Adam starts chatting with Jacie Tripplethree, the actoid (serial number JC333) playing the nurse and finds, to his surprise, that not only can she carry a conversation but, due to what she calls a fault in her programming, she has a creative imagination. 

Adam wants to build a new television series around her but the studio will not hear of it. He also finds he is falling in love with the charming robot!

Will Adam get the green light on his series? Will love prevail? 

Jacie is one of Ayckbourn's greatest characters; her portrayer won all of London's major acting awards.

THE PENELOPIAD

Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad is an adaptation of Homer's Illiad and Odyssey, told from the perspective of Odysseus' wife Penelope.

Penelope tells her story from the afterlife, from her miraculous birth to her marriage to the wily Odysseus. Her life shaters when cousin Helen runs off with a foreign prince, sparking war. Odysseus departs, leaving Penelope alone to navigate a world of uncertainty. As years pass, suitors descend, eager for her wealth and hand. With few option, Penelope turns to her loyal maids, waiting for a husband who may never return.

These maids are also with Penelope in the afterlife, to participate in her telling of the events of her life .. and to remind her of the role she played in the ending to theirs.

Content Warning: stylised sexual violence and mild coorse language.

A drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty, The Glass Menagerie is one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre.

Amanda Wingfield is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura. Amanda strives to give meaning and direction to her life and the lives of her children, though her methods are ineffective and irritating. Tom is driven nearly to distraction by his mother's nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the world of the movies. Laura also lives in her illusions. She is crippled, and this defect, intensified by her mother's anxiety to see her married, has driven her more and more into herself. 

When a gentleman caller arrives for dinner, the Wingfield family is flooded with hope. However, it is uncertain if this visitor will change things for the better.

SYNOPSIS

Maggie Beare is in the early stages of dementia, and her younger son, Arthur, reluctantly lives with her. Despite being increasingly forgetful, Maggie is lucid enough to strategically manipulate Arthur, usually for something outlandish and inconvenient. Their family is dysfunctional, and Arthur’s budding love life is ‘on the rocks’ before he gets to hand-holding. Audiences can expect a hearty, laugh-out-loud-great time.

We introduce the renowned Adelaide performers Penni Hamilton–Smith in the Maggie Beare role, originally played by Ruth Cracknell, and Patrick Clements as Arthur Beare, originally played by Garry McDonald. A talented supporting cast includes Stephen Bills, Nikki Gaertner, Mollie Mooney, Sandy Whitelaw, Jess Corrie, and introducing Alifa Willoughby and Henry Bacon.
