  • 237. REAL TALK: When It's Hard to Prioritize Your Marriage

This year has been stretching for our marriage. We’ve had some really hard and spark-less days. In fact, at the beginning of the summer, I looked into Jesse’s eyes and said: “This isn’t working. Something needs to change.”

We talked about how we felt like we’d been running on empty in our marriage, that we’d been trying to tap into any reserves we had but we were now hitting the bottom of the barrel.

Maybe some of you who have walked through challenging seasons can relate?

It wasn’t any one thing. We still loved each other. We just were tired and worn down and our marriage was getting the leftovers — and truthfully it felt like there really hadn’t even been many leftovers to spare in recent months.

We knew something needed to change, so here were two things we did:

HONESTY: we said out loud what we were feeling. We didn’t blame the other person. We took personal responsibility. It’s sometimes easy to stuff down our feelings — but that only makes things worse over time as they eventually explode out in dysfunctional responses (and usually in anger). We also got honest with God — asking for His help and wisdom — and with few trusted friends in our life. We listened to their wise counsel and took their advice.

PRIORITY: we started prioritizing our marriage again — even when it was super challenging to do with 3 teens and 3-4 younger ones. I realized that I’d been putting the kids’ needs above Jesse. I would always view their needs as more urgent and put him on the back burner. I didn’t mean to do this, but it just sort of started happening — and it hurt our relationship. So I began asking them to wait sometimes so that I could talk to him/kiss him/greet him first. We committed to look into each others’ eyes more. To kiss more. To look for little ways to express our love throughout the day. And to make time for dates by ourselves — even if it was just 45 minutes.

Love is often built and nurtured in the little tiny choices day in and day out. We’d lost sight of that this year and the impact was significant.

But little bit, by little bit, in our choosing to make each other the most important priority next to God again, the sparks are coming back!

In this week's episode of the podcast, Jesse and I share more about this year, the challenges our marriage has faced, and how we're fighting through and fighting for each other... and learning from our mistakes.

I hope this honest and vulnerable conversation encourages you. Plus, like usual, we share some family updates and I talk about a sweatshirt I'm loving and an audiobook I've been listening to!

  • 231. A Healthy Perspective on Body Image (with Rachael Gilbert)

Welcome back to the show, everyone! This week, I am discussing a Real talk: I’ve struggled with body image much of my life. I’ve used food and exercise as a reward and punishment. I’ve obsessed over what I ate or didn’t eat, how much I exercised or didn’t exercise, how my clothes fit or didn’t fit, and what the number on the scales.

I’ve beat myself up when the jeans didn’t fit, felt frustrated and discouraged when the scale didn’t say the number I wanted it to, and spent way too much mental energy thinking about what I see when I look in the mirror.

I’ve always gained 30+ pounds with each pregnancy and losing it has always been a challenge. But I felt like getting back to “pre-pregnancy size” was super important — so I’ve expended so much thought and effort and unhealthy pursuits to hit that.

I don’t share this so that people will leave comments saying, “But you look great!” I share this because I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in this.

As women, we can invest so much time, thought, and money in the pursuit of what we think is the ideal body image… all the while missing that we are made in the image of God, thinness doesn’t define our value and worth, and that the Enemy loves to hijack our focus from Jesus to an obsession over our size.

And that’s why I’m so grateful for this week’s podcast episode with @rachaeljgilbert where we talk openly about what it looks like to have a healthy body image and practical ways to get there.

Yes, pursuing health and fitness so that we can have energy to do what God has called us to do and honor the body God has given us is a good thing. But the number on the scale or size on the tag of our jeans is not what defines us: Jesus does!

And I’ve learned firsthand that you can hit your goal weight and still be incredibly unhealthy mentally, emotionally, and physically. Because health isn’t just about what we put into our bodies or what we see in the mirror; it’s also about what we allow to take up residence in our minds and hearts and what we believe about ourselves and about God.

In this episode, Rachael Gilbert, the author of Image RESTored: Tear Down Shame and Insecurity to Experience a Body Image Renovation, shares powerful insights and personal journey shed light on the often unspoken struggles many face. We delve into the impact of trauma on body image and how addressing both big and small traumas is crucial for healing. Rachael's expertise as a therapist guides us through the process, offering practical tools and a fresh perspective on finding freedom.

Rachael reveals the significance of addressing both big and small traumas that impact how we view ourselves. She explains how these experiences create barriers and impact our lives, and she shares her own transformative journey, emphasizing the power of processing trauma.

Her insights provide keys to unlock a new way of thinking and living, so I hope you will join us as we explore the layers of healing, embracing your identity in Christ, and discovering the path towards body image restoration.

  • 230. Why I'm Saying No

“Pretend you’re standing on the edge of a huge cliff and someone is going to push you off if you don’t let go of 2-3 things you’re carrying. What are you going to let go of?”

I was at the end of my first coaching session with @alliworthington a few months ago and she’d ask me to describe my life and responsibilities. She told me I needed to find some things to let go, scale back on, get help with, or delegate. I pretty quickly said, “I don’t know that I really can.” And I was prepared to back up my answer with lots of solid reasons why I needed to be carrying everything I was carrying.

Instead of me having an opportunity to do just that, she gave me the cliff analogy above and told me I had two weeks to ponder the question and come back to her with some ideas of what I was going to let go of.

I love that she did this because it was exactly what my stubborn, do-it-myself, don’t-ask-for-help personality needed to be challenged with. And — to my great surprise! — in the next few weeks, I found three big ongoing responsibilities that I could let go of — and I did!!

In this week’s episode of the podcast, I share what those three responsibilities were and how it looked and felt to hand them off and what I’m learning from this.

I hope my journey and story really encourages those of you who might need the gentle nudge — or a strong kick in the backside — to release some of what you’re clinging onto thinking you’re the only one who can do it, the only one who is willing/stepping up to say yes, or the only one who can do it as well as you can.

This journey of letting go, praying for God to bring help, receiving the offers of help, and letting others help has been SO hard and humbling and so, so good for my soul. Plus, I’m starting to feel a lot more breathing room in my life again — which has been a huge gift!

    In This Episode

I am so excited to welcome Paul Angone back to the show, who was first on back in episode 127! Paul joins me today to talk about his book Listen to Your Day, delving into the concept of paying attention in the digital age and sharing how he’s transformed and improved his own relationship with his phone.

We discuss the challenges of maintaining healthy relationships with loved ones and strangers in a digital world full of distractions, highlighting how parents are often juggling the demands of family and work. We touch upon the growing concern around the relationship between children and social media, and we talk about the importance of being present and attentive to loved ones. Paul also shares some practical tips for doing so, such as asking meaningful questions, starting the day with intention, and making eye contact with people rather than constantly looking down at our phones.

Paul encourages us to build deeper connections with people, not just with loved ones but with strangers that we come across in the grocery store as well, and he suggests starting the day off with a simple question: “What do I want to focus on today?” This, he argues, can really help set the tone for a more intentional approach to life.

  • 221. The Worry-Free Parent (with Sissy Goff)

I’m so honored to have Sissy Goff back in the studio to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent: Living in Confidence So Your Kids Can Too. When Sissy was here a couple years ago for her book Raising Worry Free Girls, the response was phenomenal, and to this day, I still hear from so many parents who were deeply impacted by that book!

A counselor for over 30 years who helps families through her counseling practice, Sissy joins me today to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent. I highly recommend this book if you have ever struggled with feeling like you aren’t doing enough as a parent or stressing over the present and the future for your kids.

In this episode, Sissy shares how so many kids today are dealing with anxiety that actually stems from their parents’ own anxiety. She gives practical tools parents can implement immediately to help them feel less uptight, scared, or stressed about how they might be messing up their kids or missing the mark as a parent.

I especially appreciated how honest she was about how trying to bubble wrap and protect our kids from struggle is actually a way we end up hurting our kids and making life harder for them in the long run.

She shares how anxiety in both parents and kids can stem from intrusive thoughts becoming stuck in a “loop rollercoaster” in our minds. In our conversation, I ask her to walk us through calming techniques to help shift us out of that loop. We talk about what it looks like to get to the root of where our worry and fear is coming from and what to do about it.

This is another powerful episode that you don’t want to miss!

    In This Episode

[00:35] – Sissy Goff returns to the podcast today!

[4:04] – A suggestion from Sissy’s editor prompted her to write two books.

[8:55] – It’s normal for parents to worry, but anxiety is when intrusive thoughts become stuck and take control.

[13:49] – Parents should realize that many times their anxiety stems from wanting the best for their kids.

[15:04] – What it looks like to practice deep breathing and grounding techniques.

[18:22] – My anxiety stemmed from caring too much about what others thought of my parenting.

[19:50] – Sissy feels that mothers are too hard on themselves nowadays.

[22:42] – The five different types of parenting.

[25:49] – Letting your kids experience discomfort helps build character and resilience in them.

[28:30] – How releasing my need for control to God helps alleviate my anxiety.

  • 220. 3 Unexpected Lifestyle Changes I Made This Summer

In this podcast episode, Jesse and I discuss three unexpected life changes that I have made over this summer -- inspired by a blood test I took earlier this year. I share why I made them, how I'm tracking them (and an app that has worked so well!) and the unexpected impact they have made on my life. We also talk about how these have turned into some daily choices that are now habits that I do without thinking.

While I don't expect you to make these same changes, I hope this episode can serve as inspiration and motivation that small consistent tweaks to our life can add up to big overall changes. I'd love to hear if you set any goals as a result of listening and I'd love to hear the accountability you set in place for your goals.

    In This Episode

[00:35] – Today’s topic is about the three big changes that I’ve made to my routine this summer.

[02:16] – Jesse had so much fun on his recent fishing trip with Silas.

[07:18] – We just got back home last night from a trip to Branson, Missouri.

[08:59] – Hear about the exciting events that happened before we left — and on the trip itself!

[14:04] – We stayed in a condo on the trip instead of a hotel.

[17:49] – We had a blast in Silver Dollar City, but it was definitely hot!

[20:23] – Jesse and I started listening to The Fountains of Silence on the trip.

[22:21] – I move into talking about my three unexpected life changes.

[23:43] – Because I like alliteration, I called the goals: sun, steps, and sleep.

[25:10] – The app I’m using is called Strides.

[30:59] – Starting my day with sunlight and fresh air has been so good for me.

[31:46] – Learn what I have learned about my sleep schedule.

[33:18] – This has also encouraged our kids, too.

[35:10] – My main objective has been a healthier lifestyle. What is your why?

  • 219. How to find and build better friendships (with Laura Tremaine)

I have really been looking forward to this topic and to having this guest on the show for weeks because a question that I frequently get asked on social media is regarding friendship and how I go about making friends.

What do you do if you’re dealing with feeling like no one ever invites you to do anything and you are lonely? My guest today, Laura Tremaine is the perfect person to help me tackle this topic because she has written a whole book about it titled The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs!

Laura joins me today to discuss friendship and community especially when it comes to women. She discusses how women struggle to make and then keep friends as adults and how the pandemic made the struggle even worse for some people, and then she recommends that we think of friends as a life council (hence the title of her book) of different types of people who each bring different strengths to our lives.

We also talk about how unrealistic expectations of others and of friendships can be harmful because they can lead to disappointment. I love how she encourages us in practical ways to look around and see the gifts in people already in our lives. It's so easy to miss that and to take those already in our lives for granted.

Laura also shares personally about recognizing her own weaknesses (not prioritizing returning texts promptly enough and more) and how she worked on being more intentional in these areas in order to show her friends love in ways that would be meaningful to them. She also leaves listeners with some helpful advice, encouraging lonely women to not give up, to keep trying with new friends but to get rid of the narrative that they tell themselves that they are unlikable. She challenges us to let go of holding too tightly to our idea of a perfect friendship to make space for appreciating the people already in our lives and being in a healthy space to allow new friendships to bloom.

Laura helps us understand how to reframe friendships and think of them from a brand-new perspective. Many of the things she shared in this episode are things I've thought about time and time again since we recorded this.

    In This Episode

[00:35] - Please welcome Laura Tremaine to the show today!

[02:08] - Laura and I have known each other for years through blogging

[03:35] - How blogging anchored Laura and gave her a voice.

[12:15] - The meaning behind the title of her book.

Is there something that you are relying on to give you joy, fulfillment, or that you just feel like you “have to have” or “can’t live without”? I was recently convicted about how much I was relying upon sugar… and it inspired me to try doing a three-week-long no sugar challenge.

In this episode, we share why and how I went twenty-one days without sugar as well and what changes I experienced along the way. Don’t worry! The purpose of this episode is not to shame you for your sugar intake or even to try to convince you to give it up, but I hope it inspires you in some way to consider if there’s something you are relying upon in an unhealthy way.

We start the episode by sharing some life updates, what books we have been reading, and an interesting drink I’ve been drinking recently and then we move into talking about how Natalie Runion inadvertently inspired me to this no-sugar challenge for twenty-one days. I share the reason why I have decided to do this, why I have not been extremely militant about the rules, what has surprised me about this challenge, and how it has made a difference in my life.

As I said, though, the purpose of this episode is not to shame you for something like sugar consumption or to try to convince you to do what I have been doing. This is my own personal journey that I am choosing to share, and I don’t even have a plan yet for what I am doing after my twenty-one days are up! I just really want to encourage you to think about things that you might be mindlessly using to get through your day in a dysfunctional way.
