• “No One Comes To See You Because Things Are Great” - Ft. Sean Sawyer, Sound Performance Psychology

Sean Sawyer, Founder of Sound Performance Psychology is in the shop this week to discuss Sean's background in psychology and how that led to his interest in the markets. We also explore the similarities between traders and other professions such as musicians, executives, and athletes. Sean explains the concept of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and its application in reprocessing traumatic memories. Additionally, Sean introduces the CLEAR mindset approach, which stands for Connect, Loosen, Embody, Accept, and Respond, and emphasizes the importance of acceptance in trading. The conversation explores the importance of loosening attachments to thoughts and emotions and cultivating mental clarity and resilience and Sean challenges the traditional approach of overcoming negative thoughts. The conversation also delves into the concept of using core values to manage risk in trading and provides exercises for identifying those values. The stigma surrounding psychology and seeking help is discussed, with an emphasis on the importance of self-awareness and personal growth.

  • Understanding Greed - Ft. Andrew and Bear Goes Long

This week Bear Goes Long and Andrew join in to explore the theme of greed in trading and how it can influence decision-making. They start off sharing some recent experiences with dealing with greed before expanding the discussion to emotional responses in general. Andrew emphasizes the value of self-reflection, documenting experiences, and finding a systematic process that aligns with one's intentions. The conversation explores the concepts of intuition and impulse in trading. Intuition is described as a whisper that requires internal stillness to hear, while impulse is the strong urge to take action, stressing the importance of quieting the mind to differentiate between the two. They also talk about the morning routine and mindset that helps them make better trading decisions. Andrew also explains the need to normalize the daily loss limit and how it can differentiate successful traders from those who struggle and gives us the blueprint for becoming the trader we want to be.

    About Andrew:

Andrew is primarily an intra-day futures trader focused on ES and NQ. Coming from a career in creative work and a background in extreme endurance sports, Andrew found markets to be the perfect combination of technical attention to detail and mental resolve.

At Long Winter Trading Company, we believe that trading is hard.

That’s what we love about it. Trading is perhaps the most difficult career path a person can take. They must face the unknown each day and do it with their own capital with countless variables at play. We don’t expect trading to come easy. We don’t expect trading to allow you to remain in your current state. We do expect that, when mastered, trading can provide both a lifestyle and knowledge of self that is well beyond the normal person.

Thoughtful creative expression has a way of changing a person. This site is simply a mechanism for self-change and the pursuit of that which has value.

For Kyle, it was a revelation — a discovery of true passion in trading, learning, and community building. Kyle's mission with the Band of Traders podcast is rooted in his personal journey. He aims to demystify trading, making it accessible to individuals at all levels of experience. About Zen:

Zen began his trading journey in March 2020, diving into the financial markets during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially having little knowledge of investing, he was inspired by a friend's suggestion to capitalize on the market downturn, leading him to experiment with a small investment on Robinhood. His early success with a mortgage REIT sparked a deeper interest in trading.

Over time, Zen expanded his skills, moving from swing trading small caps to trading options, and eventually found success in scalping shares. In 2023, Zen attempted to trade full-time and did well, especially trading Tesla. However, a few personal mistakes led him to step back and reassess his approach. Currently, he is focused on disciplined trading with a healthier balance, continuing to trade individual stocks and options on a smaller scale.

Baba Yaga shares his experience of relearning and finding a balance between excitement and steady decision-making, highlighting the need to acknowledge and set aside external pressures to perform well. Baba reflects on the recent conversation with 2yrflipper who had a clear and confident decision-making process and how that made him realize that he needed to work on his own decision-making and confidence. About Brian:

Brian McAboy started trading back in the 1990's and has been helping traders become successful traders since January 2006.  He is a retired Project Engineer, Process Engineer and Quality Engineer.

During Brian’s first year of trading, he made the common mistake of underestimating what it takes to be a trader and didn’t pay the markets or this occupation the proper respect. As a result, he paid a hefty price of over $45,000, loads of personal capital and nearly lost his marriage over it.

Fortunately, Brian had the Quality Assurance experience working in manufacturing. When he applied the Quality Assurance methodology to his trading, he found that it works amazingly well, just like it has in the business world for decades to get struggling operations under control and predictably profitable.

He then also applied his business acumen to further build that solid foundation that nearly all traders don’t get to really give him a solid base and peace of mind. Brian teaches these same success practices and methods to traders so that they can fill the gap in their training as well and enjoy relaxed, profitable trading too.

Brian’s years of experience Quality Assurance and Business Consulting allow him to provide unique, effective and refreshing resources to the traders of the world. His focus is helping traders achieve self-sufficiency through the application of Quality and Business principles and practices that result in proficiency and success.

  • “Taking Who You Are and Making It More” - Humanity w/ Andrew (AKA Bigfoot)

Andrew (Formerly known as Bigfoot) joins Kyle and Cleo in the latest Humanity of Trading episode to discuss parts work… What that means and how he has applied it to his own trading. He emphasizes the need to understand and work with different parts of oneself and shares his experience of hiring different “parts”, such as the risk manager and the thrill-seeker, to create a cohesive trading approach. By recognizing and integrating these parts, traders can improve their decision-making and overall performance. Andrew talks through the different states of mind he employs in trading before giving Cleo some insights into her own team based on a worksheet we filled out before the recording. Andrew suggests that Cleo should recognize and embrace her playful and present side in trading, and also utilize her adaptability and improvisational skills when things don't go as planned. Cleo mentions that interruptions and going off the rails are common in her work, and she handles them by validating the situation and finding a way to bring it back on track. Cleo and Kyle share their initial resistance to this approach but acknowledge its potential benefits. They explore the tension between rule-based discipline and improvisation in trading, and how to find a balance between the two. Andrew emphasizes the need to identify moments of completion in trading and transition between different aspects of one's personality. They also discuss the importance of self-reflection, accepting all parts of oneself, and confronting negative self-talk.

  • "Just Don't Quit Before You Figure It Out" - Roundtable

This week’s roundtable topic comes from Perdue (who unfortunately had some technical issues and couldn’t join in). Fleri and Baba Yaga talk about the importance of perseverance, learning from failures, and having a defined trading process. They also touch on the concepts of decision fatigue, sustainability, and the need to preserve capital. Both emphasize the importance of having clear setups, being able to recognize opportunities, and having the confidence to execute trades. The key takeaways: the need for grit, continuous learning, and the ability to adapt and refine one's trading approach. They also highlight the importance of perseverance and resilience in trading, emphasizing the need to embrace losses and understand that losing is a part of the trading process. Fleri points out the significance of having a well-defined trading strategy and being comfortable with the statistical probabilities of winning and losing. They also mention the role of natural talent in trading and the need to focus on personal progress rather than comparing oneself to others.

He focuses on market structure through the lens of TPO charting and executes based on volume, misplaced large orders, and delta. He loves the opening range breakout and typically trades the market from the “inside out”.

    About Ric:

Ric had a fairly normal middle-class childhood and had developed an interest in tinkering with things at a young age. As an adult, he married a woman named Diane and they had a daughter, Beth. Ric eventually became a scientist and after his wife was killed by an alternate version of himself, he dedicated his life to avenging her death and reconnecting with his grandson… I think… That or he’s just a dude slinging some UB.
