Remember when the screen door would slam shut in June and just stay unlatched for months? Back then, time didn’t feel like something you were constantly running out of. It was just this endless stretch of hot pavement, melted ice pops, and riding your bike until the streetlights came on. When you’re a kid, summer feels like a whole lifetime. Summer was this safe little bubble where tomorrow took forever to arrive, and the absolute worst part of your day was just having to go inside and get some rest. But then you grow up and the real world hits you hard and suddenly that endless freedom gets chopped up and shrunk down into a few strictly rationed PTO days. Now, you’re trying to squeeze a lifetime of rest into a desperate week off, nervously checking your work messages between quarterly reviews, while the actual retirement age keeps moving further away. You find yourself sitting under buzzing office lights on a random Tuesday in July, looking out the window at a beautiful day, just feeling too exhausted to enjoy it and too broke to travel out of your monotonous reality anyway. It’s quite a realization that even our basic breathing room got traded away for a cubicle, leaving us missing a season that used to belong to us when we were young.
