Dr. Jennifer Ronholm & Jinha Suh: Poultry Microbiome Diversity and Health | Ep. 209
In this episode of The Poultry Podcast Show, Dr. Jennifer Ronholm and Jinha Suh from McGill University explore poultry gut microbiome diversity and its implications for flock health. They discuss wild red junglefowl research, microbiome erosion in commercial chickens, pathogen control, and the potential development of defined probiotics that support digestive health and microbial diversity. Listen now on all major platforms!
โCommercial poultry environments can gradually reduce gut microbiome diversity through consistent diets, intensive housing conditions, and repeated environmental pressures across production cycles.โ - Dr. Jennifer Ronholm
Meet the guests:
Dr. Jennifer Ronholm is an associate professor at McGill University and Canada Research Chair in Agricultural Microbiology. Her research examines microbiological food safety, microbial genomics, antimicrobial resistance, foodborne pathogens, and One Health approaches across interconnected animal, human, and environmental systems.
Jinha Suh is an MSc candidate in Animal Science at McGill University researching poultry microbiomes. Her work includes genomic sequencing, microbiome analysis, antimicrobial resistance, and the gut microbiomes of wild red junglefowl, with research exploring novel probiotic candidates for Canadian poultry production systems.
