The Dark Side of Black Resilience: Are We Too Strong for Our Own Good?

Season 3 | Episode 221
1h 34m | Aug 26, 2026

Welcome back to another episode of the Talk My Credo Podcast!

Black resilience is often celebrated—and for good reason.

But this week, we're asking a more uncomfortable question:

What happens when the behaviors that helped us survive begin making it harder for us to heal?

The crew dives into emotional survival in Black spaces, examining the coping mechanisms, attitudes, and protective behaviors many of us learn while navigating stress, racism, expectations, family dynamics, and everyday life.

We discuss the pressure behind the “Strong Black Man” and “Strong Black Woman” identities, emotional compartmentalization, humor as a coping mechanism, hyper-awareness, and the complicated relationship between being informed and constantly feeling like you have to remain “woke.”

These behaviors can protect us.

But can they also exhaust us?

Can strength become an inability to ask for help?

Can awareness become hypervigilance?

Can emotional toughness make vulnerability feel dangerous?

The goal isn't to criticize Black resilience. It's to examine whether some survival strategies should evolve as our circumstances, opportunities, and understanding of emotional health evolve with them.

Later, The Shenanigan Report takes us through another wild collection of stories involving the death of Sonya Massey’s convicted killer, developments involving Karmelo Anthony, cultural appropriation, racist imagery and rhetoric, Master P’s comments about continuing to discuss slavery, and plenty of classic TMC foolishness along the way.
