It can also deliver a morning brief, organize tasks around your biggest priorities, prepare you for meetings, track what your team owes you, and proactively identify work it can take off your plate. But eventually, lifestyles adjust, expenses increase, and that extra money simply becomes expected. Meanwhile, a large increase in payroll can permanently eat into the margins of the business. The alternative isn't refusing to compensate your team fairly. It's becoming the kind of employer who helps your people turn the money they're already earning into something meaningful.Scott and Andy explain how understanding your employees' actual goals—buying their first house, building emergency savings, getting married, supporting their family, or creating long-term financial security—can create a much stronger connection between their job and the life they're trying to build. Instead of simply handing someone more money, teach them how to use it.In this episode, Scott and Andy cover:

Why raises quickly become the employee's new normal

How oversized pay increases can quietly destroy your margins

Why asking for “more money” doesn't always mean someone needs a raise

The danger of becoming your employees' personal bank

Why knowing your team's short- and long-term goals matters

Helping employees save for homes, weddings, cars, emergencies, and other major goals

Teaching the fundamentals of protect, save, and grow

Using financial education and continuing education as part of employee retention

Why connecting compensation to meaningful goals can improve engagement and performance

The big idea?A raise they may eventually forget. Helping them build a life they actually want? That's something they'll remember. As Scott puts it, financial fitness deserves the same attention many fitness professionals already give physical fitness. Instead of repeatedly kicking financial planning down the road, owners have an opportunity to help their teams become stronger in both. In this episode of The Profit Lifestyle, Scott Carpenter and Andy “Boy” Miller break down why traditional financial advice often doesn’t fit entrepreneurs and gym owners — and why building wealth requires a different playbook. Scott shares how he uses liquidity, strategic debt, a personally structured “private bank,” and cash-flowing real estate to turn business profits into assets that continue working for him outside the gym. The goal isn’t simply to save enough money to retire someday. It’s to build enough cash flow, liquidity, and appreciating assets that you can create financial freedom years — or even decades — earlier. Inside This EpisodeWhy traditional retirement advice may not fit entrepreneurs and gym ownersThe difference between destructive debt and strategic leverageWhy business owners need access to liquid capitalHow to “dig your well before you’re thirsty”Why keeping too much cash in traditional savings can be inefficientHow Scott structures his own “private bank”Using the same capital for both offense and defenseHow leverage and OPM — Other People’s Money — can accelerate wealth creationTurning gym cash flow into cash-flowing real estate and other assetsScott’s real-world numbers from his real estate portfolioHow acquiring the right assets can create income and increase net worth without relying solely on the gymWhy Scott believes gym owners should take greater control over their financial strategyKey Takeaways 1. Entrepreneurs need a different financial playbook. A gym owner doesn’t have the same financial needs as someone earning a predictable paycheck with a traditional 401(k). Business ownership creates both opportunities and risks that require greater access to capital. 2. Liquidity matters. HVAC systems break. Floors need replacing. Opportunities appear unexpectedly. Having accessible capital gives you the ability to protect your business when something goes wrong — and move quickly when something goes right. 3. Debt isn’t automatically bad. Used irresponsibly, debt can destroy wealth. Used strategically, it becomes leverage that allows you to control larger assets without providing all of the capital yourself. 4. Your gym can fund assets outside your gym. Instead of allowing excess profits to sit idle, Scott explains how he began moving gym cash flow into his private banking strategy and then deploying capital into real estate, businesses, and other opportunities. 5. Build assets that keep working without you. Scott walks through how cash flow, mortgage paydown, and real estate appreciation from assets he acquired are collectively adding roughly $347,000 per year in cash flow and net worth based on the assumptions discussed in the episode. His long-term projection: by age 65, those assets could generate approximately $835,000 per year in income with a projected net worth of roughly $15.2 million under the growth assumptions he describes. Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty The time to find capital isn’t when your business desperately needs it. Scott recommends establishing access to capital — through available credit, liquid assets, and other financial tools — while your business is healthy. That gives you defense when something goes wrong and offense when an opportunity is too good to pass up. Want to Build Your Own Private Bank? Scott also breaks down the strategy he personally uses to create what he calls his private bank, structured around a specially designed whole life insurance policy. The objective is to build a pool of capital that can continue growing while remaining accessible for opportunities, emergencies, real estate purchases, business acquisitions, and other investments. If you want Scott to look at your current situation, cash flow, existing assets, and financial goals, book a FREE 1-on-1 call. The gym owner horror stories continue. In Part II, Scott Carpenter and Andy Boy Miller get into another side of business ownership that can be just as painful as bad leases, permits, and construction problems:The people side of the business.Scott shares the story of a longtime personal training client who injured herself after doing something her trainer specifically told her not to do—only for an attorney's letter to show up shortly afterward.Even with liability waivers, insurance, certifications, and documentation, Scott and Andy explain why there is no contract that can completely eliminate your risk as a business owner. Then Andy shares one of the most difficult lessons from the early years of his gym. When he first opened, he gave several close friends discounted "lifetime" memberships. Years later, when the business could no longer afford those rates, he asked them to move toward the gym's standard pricing. He expected his closest friends to understand.Instead, every conversation went badly. Some of these were people Andy had vacationed with, invited to his wedding, and considered close friends—and the situation ultimately cost him both memberships and friendships. The conversation becomes a bigger lesson about separating personal relationships from business decisions, understanding that clients will usually make choices based on what's best for them, and developing the emotional resilience required to stay in business long term.Scott and Andy also discuss how stoicism helped them through some of their most difficult seasons as entrepreneurs, including Scott's recommendation of Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle Is the Way.Because in business, things will eventually go sideways. The goal isn't to avoid every problem. It's to build the perspective, systems, and resilience to handle them when they happen.
In This Episode:
00:14 – Recapping Gym Owner Horror Stories Part I00:35 – Why liability gets more complicated as your business grows01:09 – Why waivers and contracts can't completely protect you01:24 – How lawsuits can become a financial war of attrition02:15 – The insurance loopholes gym owners need to understand03:41 – Scott's story about a longtime personal training client05:10 – The gym injury that happened after a client ignored instructions06:26 – Why every gym should have an incident report process07:02 – When the client's tone suddenly changed08:36 – The attorney letter that showed up a week later09:00 – How documentation and text messages helped protect the business10:43 – Why problems can come from the people you least expect11:20 – Andy's biggest early pricing mistake12:07 – Asking his founding members to move to normal rates12:55 – Why every single conversation went badly14:22 – Losing customers AND close friendships16:37 – Developing a thicker skin as a business owner17:34 – The reality of putting your clients' needs ahead of your own18:58 – Bad reviews, chargebacks, and long-term clients turning against you20:36 – Why you can't take every business setback personally21:15 – How stoicism helped Scott and Andy through hard times21:36 – Scott's recommendation: The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday23:39 – Preparing yourself for the inevitable problems of business ownership
The Biggest Takeaway
Protect the business, but don't let the business destroy you emotionally.Have your waivers.Keep your certifications current.Document incidents.Save important communications.Be careful with special pricing and promises that could become unsustainable later. But also understand that even when you do everything right, people may still leave, complain, threaten legal action, dispute charges, or turn against you. That doesn't mean you stop caring about your clients. It means learning to make decisions based on what's sustainable for the business instead of making every decision out of fear of disappointing someone. As Andy explains in the episode, business owners in service industries naturally care deeply about their clients—but your clients aren't necessarily thinking about what their decisions will do to your business or your family. And when the hard seasons come, perspective matters.Don't take everything personally. Learn from it, adapt, and keep moving forward.🎙️ Episode 230: Sued? Blackmailed? Gym Owner Horror Stories Part IIListen now, and if you're dealing with your own gym owner horror story, reach out. They're reminders that when you're signing leases, building out locations, dealing with contractors, or navigating financing, you have to understand what you're agreeing to and be willing to advocate for yourself.
In This Episode:
00:21 – Why becoming a business owner can put a target on your back01:49 – Scott's first nightmare experience after buying a gym04:29 – Dealing with a difficult independent trainer05:07 – Terminating the relationship and the confrontation that followed06:20 – Why Scott eventually called the police07:39 – The blackmail email that came next09:51 – Andy's first major gym owner horror story10:35 – Getting hit with a cease-and-desist order12:32 – The mistake that eventually cost Andy $20,00013:35 – The hidden costs inside commercial leases14:41 – Why your building's usage classification matters16:10 – How a sprinkler requirement exploded into a potential $180,000 expense17:25 – How Scott found a workaround and avoided the massive bill18:57 – Andy's ADA compliance nightmare during construction21:17 – Fighting for an alternative before the project became financially impossible24:27 – Why commercial real estate requires extreme due diligence26:23 – Asbestos testing and another unexpected financing problem27:59 – Putting another $20,000 at risk just to keep the deal alive29:15 – Creating a Plan B when everyone kept promising the loan would close29:41 – Why nobody will protect your business as much as you will30:10 – Why Scott and Andy are sharing these storiesThe biggest takeaway? You have to be your own advocate.Contractors can make mistakes. Banks can delay financing. Cities can change requirements. Landlords will protect themselves. And the people involved in your transaction don't have the same amount at stake that you do.Ask questions. Read the lease. Understand the permits. Verify what you're being told. And when something doesn't make sense, keep digging. And if you're going through your own gym owner horror story right now, remember—you aren't the only one who's been there.Scott and Andy have been through it too, and there are plenty more stories where these came from.Part II coming next.

But the most effective salespeople and coaches have something else in common: they know how to tell powerful stories. In this episode of The Profit Lifestyle, Scott Carpenter and Andy “Boy” Miller explain how storytelling can help fitness entrepreneurs build trust, create emotional connections, close more sales, improve client retention, and inspire people to take action. Scott shares the emotional story of “John,” a prospective fitness client who continued delaying his health goals because the timing never felt right. Unfortunately, the “someday” John was waiting for never came. Scott explains how this story can help potential clients understand the real consequences of continuing to postpone their health. Andy also shares his personal experience of becoming the “fat gym owner.” Despite owning a fitness studio and understanding training and nutrition, life circumstances gradually caused him to gain 30–40 pounds. By sharing that vulnerable experience during consultations, Andy helps prospective clients feel understood instead of judged. The lesson is simple: people rarely make important decisions based purely on logic. They act when they feel emotionally connected to the message—and stories create that connection better than facts alone. In This Episode, You’ll Learn:Why storytelling is one of the most effective tools in salesHow stories create emotional connections and motivate actionWhy facts and logic alone often fail to move prospectsHow to use short client stories during consultationsHow vulnerability builds trust and strengthens rapportWhy personal struggles can make you a more effective coachHow storytelling can help overcome the “someday” mentalityHow to use stories to improve renewals and client retentionHow stories can motivate struggling clients to get back on trackWhy you do not need a long or dramatic story to make an impactHow to naturally incorporate stories into sales calls, check-ins, and coaching conversationsKey Takeaway You do not need to memorize every possible sales response or objection-handling script. Build a collection of honest, relatable stories from your own experiences and your clients’ experiences. Use those stories to help people see themselves, understand what is possible, and feel the urgency to take action. A story can be two minutes long—or just two sentences.
Want to Add Medical Wellness to Your Business?
Book a free 30-minute advisor call with Scott to learn how you can add GLP-1 support, peptides, medical wellness, and related services to your business through the proper medical partnerships:https://ptlegends.com/30minadvisorcallYou can also contact Scott directly:Scott@TheProfitLifestyle.com A massive new market is emerging in the fitness and wellness industry—and business owners who continue to ignore it risk falling behind. In this episode, Scott Carpenter and Andy Miller discuss the rapidly growing number of people using GLP-1 medications and why fitness professionals need to stop judging, shaming, or avoiding this market.People using GLP-1s may be losing weight, but many are also losing strength, muscle mass, energy, and confidence because they are not receiving the nutrition, resistance training, and ongoing support they need. That creates an enormous opportunity for gym owners, coaches, and wellness professionals to step in.Even when you do not personally offer GLP-1 medications, you can still build a muscle-preservation or GLP-1 support program that helps clients maintain strength, protect lean muscle, improve their nutrition, and navigate what comes after the weight loss.Scott and Andy also explain how medical wellness services, peptides, hormone optimization, and strength training can be incorporated into a more comprehensive client journey—with the appropriate medical professionals overseeing clinical care.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

Why GLP-1 users represent a rapidly expanding fitness market

Why many clients may be hiding their GLP-1 use from their trainers

How judgment and shame can push potential clients away

Why weight loss without strength training can lead to muscle loss

How gym owners can create a GLP-1 support or muscle-preservation program

Why clients who have already lost weight may be asking, “What now?”

How strength training can support long-term health, longevity, and independence

Why fitness businesses should meet people where they are

How medical wellness and peptide services can complement fitness programs

Why this market can create both a meaningful impact and a new revenue stream

How Scott and Andy have maintained or gained muscle while reducing body fat

Why this opportunity is not the future of fitness—it is already here

The Opportunity for Fitness Professionals
Many GLP-1 users are receiving a prescription without receiving a complete plan for nutrition, movement, strength training, recovery, and long-term weight maintenance.Fitness professionals are uniquely positioned to fill that gap.Instead of criticizing people for using these medications, gym owners can create a supportive environment that helps them preserve muscle, improve their strength, build sustainable habits, and maintain their results.People are already searching for this kind of support. The businesses that speak directly to their concerns may be able to reach a large, underserved market with relatively little competition.
Key Takeaway
You do not have to personally agree with every decision your clients make.Your role is to meet people where they are, understand the challenges they are facing, and provide the support they need to become healthier, stronger, and more capable.GLP-1 usage is not going away. Fitness businesses can either ignore this market—or become the trusted solution these clients are already looking for.Subscribe for more strategies on growing a profitable fitness business, expanding your services, and creating a greater impact in your community.

It is about creating the right message for the right person, on the right platform, around the right problem. Scott and Andy explain why your content should always connect back to your product, why knowing your dream client matters more than chasing trends, and how to create posts, ads, blogs, emails, and videos that actually stop people from scrolling. They also discuss the difference between talking about your product versus speaking directly to your audience’s pain points, and why solving the problem should always come before selling the product. Andy shares a simple content framework: Problem, Solution, Outcome, Call to Action, which can be used for almost any marketing piece. The episode also introduces the upcoming Profit Lifestyle University, including access to content creation training, marketing resources, community support, and an AI tool built to help business owners create content in their own brand voice.
In This Episode, They Cover:

Why content should lead back to your product or service

The 4 P’s of content creation: Product, Person, Platform, and Problem

Why your target audience matters more than follower count

How to identify where your dream clients actually spend time

Why platforms are not just digital — they can also be physical places

The biggest mistake business owners make when creating content

Why you should focus more on the problem than the product

How to use the Problem, Solution, Outcome, Call to Action framework

Why AI can help remove the blank-screen problem in content creation

How the Profit Lifestyle University will support business owners with courses, tools, and community

Key Takeaways:
Your content should not be random. In this episode, Scott Carpenter and Andy “Boy” Miller break down one of the biggest marketing mistakes fitness business owners make: choosing between short-term marketing and long-term brand building instead of using both together.Short-term marketing is direct response — ads, offers, lead forms, consultations, and campaigns designed to get someone to take action now.Long-term marketing is your brand — your reputation, your content, your website, your social media presence, your personal brand, your authority, and the trust you build over time.Scott and Andy explain why direct response can bring in leads now, but can become expensive if your audience is cold and your brand has no foundation. They also explain why brand marketing may not always create immediate sales, but it can dramatically improve your conversions, reduce your acquisition costs, and make people more likely to buy when they are ready. They also cover key marketing numbers every fitness business owner needs to know, including customer acquisition cost, return on ad spend, lifetime customer value, and front-end cash flow. This episode is especially valuable for gym owners, online coaches, chiropractors, and fitness entrepreneurs who want to stop guessing with marketing and start building a strategy that creates both immediate opportunities and long-term growth.Need help building out your marketing plan? In this episode of The Profit Lifestyle for Fitness Entrepreneurs, Scott Carpenter sits down with Nick Gaiski of Pod Bro’s Media to talk about what The Profit Lifestyle really means: building a business that gives you both money and time freedom. Scott breaks down why PT Legends evolved into The Profit Lifestyle, why business and wealth coaching now go hand-in-hand, and why many gym owners are only one or two strategic changes away from unlocking more profit, more freedom, and a better quality of life. This episode also dives into the current opportunity around GLP-1s, peptides, medical wellness, and high-ticket wellness programs. Scott explains why fitness business owners cannot ignore this shift, how to stay in your lane by partnering with medical providers, and why simply referring clients out for an affiliate fee could cost you the most valuable part of your business: the client relationship. Scott and Nick also talk about charging more, building three-tier offers, solving bigger problems, and why the clients who pay the most are often the best clients to work with. If you’re a gym owner, personal trainer, online coach, med spa owner, chiropractor, or wellness entrepreneur who feels stuck, underpaid, or unsure how to grow without working more hours, this episode will help you rethink your model. In this episode of The Profit Lifestyle for Fitness Entrepreneurs, Scott and Andy continue the conversation around the K-shaped economy and how it is impacting gyms, boutique fitness studios, and open membership models. The reality is simple: not every client has the same budget, the same goals, or the same level of urgency. Some people want the lowest-cost option. Some want more support. And some are ready to pay premium prices for faster results, more attention, more guidance, and a complete solution. The problem? Most gyms are still treating every lead and every member like they all want the same thing.Scott and Andy break down how gym owners can increase average client value without simply raising rates on current members. Instead, the goal is to build a three-tier offer system that includes low-ticket, mid-ticket, and high-ticket options designed for different types of buyers. They also discuss how to bolt on higher-value services like nutrition coaching, transformation programs, GLP-1 support, peptide/wellness support, and mentorship-style programs that help clients solve the problems happening outside the gym.Because the three hours a week inside the gym are usually the easy part. The real opportunity is helping clients with the other 165 hours. In this episode, Scott and Andy cover:

Why the K-shaped economy is forcing gyms to rethink their offer structure

How to increase average client value without raising rates on everyone

Why some clients are willing to pay $2,000, $5,000, $8,000, or more for the right solution

The difference between low-ticket, mid-ticket, and high-ticket buyers

Why premium clients often get better results because they are more invested

How GLP-1 support programs can help gyms retain and serve clients better

Why nutrition coaching, medical wellness, and transformation programs can become major profit levers

How to sell higher-ticket offers even when a lead starts with a price objection

Why gym owners need to position themselves as the expert, not just the person answering price questions

The build, sell, fulfill, renew, and launch framework for adding premium offers into your gym

If your gym is struggling with cancellations, price objections, or low average client value, this episode will show you how to create better offers, serve clients at a higher level, and protect your business from the pressure of the current market. And if your gym is already doing well, this strategy can help you explode profits without needing to add a massive amount of extra work.Want help building higher-ticket offers, GLP-1 support programs, or a better pricing system for your gym?Book a complimentary call with Scott and the team here: 👉 https://ptlegends.com/30mincallwithscott

THE show for gym owners wanting to achieve more FREEDOM in their lives through their business... and create more time, money, and impact for themselves and their communities.

The hard way to grow is by doubling your membership. The easy way to grow is to learn how to double your average client value so you need half as many clients (it's not as hard as you think... for any business model).

Learn from Scott Carpenter, a 6x functionally retired gym owner and fitness author with multiple 7-figure businesses, as he walks you through exactly how he started his gyms and the best practices he uses in the fitness industry for marketing, advertising, sales, fulfillment, retention, hiring, systems, operations, and location scaling.
