Have you ever taken a vacation, bought a nicer car, or started making more moneyāonly to feel like you had to explain yourself to your clients, employees, friends, or family?
That āmust be niceā mentality can make successful business owners feel guilty for winning.
In Episode 232 of The Profit Lifestyle for Fitness Entrepreneurs, Scott Carpenter and Andy āBoyā Miller talk about why gym owners often feel the need to downplay their successāand why doing so can quietly hold you and your business back.
Scott and Andy share personal stories of hiding new cars, minimizing vacations, dealing with jealous employees, and watching people change once they started becoming more successful.
The reality is that most people only see the result.
They don't see the financial pressure, risk, razor-thin margins, long hours, sacrifices, debt, or years of work behind building a successful business.
And when someone responds negatively to your success, that doesn't necessarily mean you're doing something wrong.
Sometimes, it's simply their insecurity showing.

Stop Making Yourself Smaller
When a client gets a promotion, buys a new house, gets a new car, or accomplishes something important, you celebrate them.
So why shouldn't you be allowed to celebrate your own wins?
Success in business doesn't automatically mean greed.
As Scott explains, making more money can simply be evidence that you're creating more value, helping more people, and making a larger impact.
You don't have to flaunt your successābut you also don't have to hide it.
Watch Out for the āCrabs in a Bucketā
Some people genuinely want to see you succeed.
Others want you to succeedāas long as you don't become more successful than they are.
Those are the people who may complain about your prices, question your vacations, criticize your purchases, or suddenly treat you differently when your business begins growing.
Don't allow the loudest critics in the room to dictate your decisions.
Get Around People Who Want You to Win
As your business grows, your circle may need to evolve with it.
That doesn't mean burning bridges or abandoning everyone who helped you along the way.
But it does mean paying attention to the people around you.
Surround yourself with clients, friends, mentors, and other entrepreneurs who are genuinely excited to see you succeedāand who encourage you to keep growing instead of pulling you back down.
The people who got you to where you are may not always be the people who can help you get where you're going.
And that's okay.
