23m - Sep 13, 2026 - Episode 50: Kingdom Hearts
Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this, our FIFTIETH EPISODE(!), Robin LaGrave joins us to discuss the Disney/gaming crossover that predates ours by twenty years: Kingdom Hearts. Its world-hopping structure lends itself beautifully to a domain-hopping Ravenloft game, but can the notoriously complicated backstory of its villain do the same? Topics discussed include:
- Why we're primarily sticking to the first Kingdom Hearts game, and the alternate Ansem backstory from former cohost Matt Graydon that maintains the essence of the character while beautifully streamlining the plot;
- Why the Dark Powers might secretly be championing the power of friendship;
- How to incorporate Keyblades into your game without signifying that a single member of your party is the protagonist of the entire campaign;
- Canonical Ravenloft NPCs that can serve as Ansem, Mickey/Donald/Goofy. and the Princesses of Heart, as well as ideas for alternate domain-spanning master plans, if you want to use the structure of Kingdom Hearts for a straightforward Ravenloft game;
- And more!

25m - Aug 13, 2026 - Episode 49: Kylo Ren
The dead speak! A Sith cult within the Unknown Regions has heard a mysterious whispering in their minds, a threat of REVENGE in the sinister voice of the late EMPEROR PALPATINE.
Meanwhile, the brave RESISTANCE dispatches secret agents to gather intelligence, training for battle against the diabolical FIRST ORDER.
Supreme Leader KYLO REN builds his army and rages against the Resistance, determined to destroy any threat to his power...
Look, say what you will about the sequel trilogy (just do it somewhere other than here), but one thing is indisputable: Kylo Ren is grade-A darklord material. Topics discussed include:
- How we managed to have Kylo Ren in this timeline, seeing as how we killed off Luke and Leia in utero;
- Why the first hour or so of The Force Awakens is the most dramatically interesting time for this setting, offering plenty of story opportunities other than "hey look, it's the Empire but not as cool";
- Hidden Sith cults, secret treasures, magic knives, and other things that make Rise of Skywalker a D&D McGuffin hunt;
- An AU that allows you to make Sidious the darklord of the entire Stellar Archipelago;
- and more!

9m - Aug 1, 2026 - The Peddler's Tales, Episode 6: Don Karnage
Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Don Karnage doesn't belong in Star Wars Summer...or does he? Kris Newton joins us as Tom makes his impassioned case for why Talespin was serving us Disney Star Wars long before the all-consuming maw of capitalism began to serve us literal Disney Star Wars. Topics discussed include:
- The character class that Don Karnage firmly establishes for himself from episode one, and that is further bolstered by a bit of 2017 Duck Tales lore;
- Why the Iron Vulture is just the best;
- The narratively rich role that Shere Khan, or a Shere Khan-type character, can play in your Outer Rim adventures;
- How Higher For Hire not only provides a model for a PC group, but also allows the GM to fill in any gaps the party may need;
- and more!

24m - Jul 13, 2026 - Episode 48: Maul
Death and destruction! Maul, along with whatever poor saps he's drawn into his ruinous orbit, spreads chaos as he descends upon the Outer Rim. After clawing his way back from the grave, Maul murders and pillages at every turn. Fueled by rage and vengeance, he searches for meaning among warring crime syndicates as rumors of his brutal attacks spread across the archipelago...
Look, guys, the Phantom Menace opening crawl was no help at all and Maul: Shadow Lord doesn't have any opening narration. Thank the Force for Clone Wars newsreels! Topics discussed include:
- A quick summary of Maul's whole deal for those of you who have only seen the movies and don't want to watch twelve hours of cartoons (Rachel sees and validates you);
- What makes Maul unique among our Star Wars darklords, from his political status (or lack thereof) to the way he closes the borders;
- The glorious potential of a domain that combines the Wire with the wild west, and also lightsabers;
- Why this is one of the domains where your PCs can have the biggest impact, for better or worse;
- and more!

22m - Jun 13, 2026 - Episode 47: Darth Vader
The PCs have traveled to another region of the Stellar Archipelago in an attempt to rescue its people from the clutches of the vile archdevil Sidious..
Little do the PCs know that the IMPERIUM has secretly begun construction on a new floating fortress, the dreaded BLACK CITADEL.
When completed, this ultimate weapon will spell certain doom for the small band of heavily armed transients struggling to restore freedom to the domain...
It's the man himself: DARTH VADER! Topics discussed include:
- How to adapt the most iconic villain and the most iconic setting in all of Star Wars into D&D terms so that your players don't wonder why they aren't just playing Star Wars;
- The perfect stat block for Vader, and how that led to one of our biggest scifi-to-fantasy changes to the source material;
- Some of the iconic NPCs of this period, both villainous and heroic, and the role they can play in a Star Wars Ravenloft game;
- The scariest fantasy horror version of the Death Star we could come up with, complete with a fate worse than death for the Jedi;
- And more!

S5E47 - 2h 12m - Jun 13, 2026 - Horror Movie Minisode 1: Repo! The Genetic Opera
Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Our generous listeners donated to the Capital Area Food Bank and voted for their horror movie minisode of choice, so here we are with Repo! The Genetic Opera. This was our first time watching it, and we're going through the Rotti Largo highs and the Luigi Largo lows to bring you a splatterpunk gothic dystopia. With uncensored F bombs. You have been warned. Topics discussed include:
- How to bring your PCs into a movie that, at its heart, is a personal story about a handful of people making their tragic backstory everyone's problem (but then, isn't that Ravenloft in a nutshell?);
- The possibility of a heroic faction in a movie where pretty much everyone is awful;
- The gloriously weird and RPG-friendly potential of genetic modifications;
- An old-school domain we've never talked about on mic before that gives a model for killing Rotti without freeing him from his torment;
- and more!

16m - May 13, 2026 - Episode 46: Count Dooku
War! The Republic is crumbling under attacks by the ruthless darklord, Count Dooku. There are heroes on both sides. Evil is everywhere. (You know, because it's Ravenloft.)
In a stunning move, Count Dooku has delved into the secret archives of the heretical Sith and summoned Sidious, the archdevil at the heart of their cult.
As Dooku and his fiendish patron play both sides of the war against one another, a group of heavily armed transients must decide how best to tip the scales...
Yes, we are kicking off Star Wars Summer with COUNT DOOKU! Topics discussed include:
- The animated shorts you need to watch if you have no idea why we thought Sneery McSneers-A-Lot would make for a compelling darklord, and a summary of them if you don't have time to check them out;
- The D&D versions of the droid and clone armies (no, the clones don't involve the clone spell, although we did think about it);
- An AU if you would rather make Dooku the center of a paranoid political conspiracy thriller than a war story;
- Our greatest challenge yet for incorporating the older material;
- and more!

S4E46 - 1h 40m - May 13, 2026 - Bonus Episode 7: May the Fourth (Star Wars Prologue)
It is a period of Star Wars. Nerdy podcasters, striking from a Maryland living room, have recorded their first installment about the evil Imperium of the Mists.
During the episode, the Kolars managed to include overall plans for the demiplane's strangest Mist cluster, the STELLAR ARCHIPELAGO, a group of four domains isolated from one another yet united by powerful similarities.
Harried by the household's excitable cats, the Kolars race to their hosting platform, sharing their plans to streamline the summer episodes and bring clarity to the listeners....
If by this point you're saying "Kolars, please be normal and tell us what this episode is," we're establishing the overall ground rules for the shared Star Wars Mist cluster that will be the subject of our next four episodes. Topics discussed include:
- How we're planning to adapt a galactic space fantasy saga to a non-galactic, non-space fantasy setting without necessarily making it Spelljammer;
- The role of Palpatine, who is arguably the evil axis mundi of Star Wars but is inarguably living his best non-tormented life;
- Adapting Jedi and Sith without coming up with a whole new monk or paladin subclass;
- Which darklord we're planning to tackle first, since our teaser at the end of the last episode was just "Star Wars!";
- and more!

15m - Apr 13, 2026 - Episode 45: KPop Demon Hunters
Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! It's our annual non-Disney episode, and this year, what could we choose except the movie that soundly ate Disney's lunch? There's a TON of terrific overlap between KPop Demon Hunters and D&D/Ravenloft, from "group of heavily armed people who kick supernatural butt through the power of song" to "villains who get pulled into a special hell of their own creation and also of a dark power's creation," but it's also grounded specifically in the 21st century pop music scene, which is...decidedly not terrific overlap. Like Huntr/x, though, Kolars don't quit. Topics discussed include:
- Why we went with Jinu as our darklord instead of Gwi-Ma or Celine (don't worry, we have an AU for darklord Celine if you hate her unconditionally and want Jinu and Rumi to kiss);
- How Celine's ethos can make everything worse even if you don't have her as the darklord, and can provide a reason for Huntr/x to have a non-adventurer cover identity in the process;
- The OG domain that tackled the theme of intrusive thoughts, guilt, and shame, and why KPop Demon Hunters does it better (it's partly the lack of kender);
- Alternate rules to make combat more cinematic and to incorporate Huntri/x style themes of teamwork into your party;
- and more!

S4E45 - 2h 11m - Apr 13, 2026 - Book Club of Dread After Dark is LIVE!
Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords...after dark. You donated $600 to the Capital Area Food Bank, and we're finally delivering on the promised rewards, starting with the anthology that has someone's X-rated Roger Rabbit fanfic: Hot Blood Volume 4: Seeds of Fear. Much like Tower of Doom, this one is so ear-scorchingly filthy that we don't want it showing up on our main feed, so we're making it available for free on our Patreon instead: www.patreon.com/wonderfulworldofdarklords We do not bleep the swear words in this one; it is not remotely safe for...well, anything. You have been warned.
The episoide is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/book-club-of-of-154194951
Our beverage is Pink Panty-Dropper Punch. For the mocktail version, make pink lemonade from concentrate using Sprite instead of water (if you can only find regular lemonade, add grenadine to make it pink). For the cocktail version, use beer instead of water or Sprite and/or add vodka to taste.
Thank you for listening, and happy gaming!
