In 1997, Vincennes University student Brook Baker was raped and brutally murdered in her off-campus home. Police interviewed hundreds of potential suspects but were only led to dead ends. That is, until the killer struck again two years later. In 1999, Vincennes University student Erika Norman also was raped and murdered in the same way, and the killer left behind the same type of crime scene. In this episode, I tell you the story of University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth student Charles Allen Jr., affectionately known as Charlie to his friends and family. In October of 2007, Charlie made plans to attend a party with his best friend, Mason; but when the two were supposed to meet up on campus to drive to the party together, Charlie never showed. And that wasn’t the only odd, out-of-character behavior from Charlie. Earlier that same day, he had a bizarre and frantic conversation with his sister, and he left a separate, panicky, out-of-breath voicemail on each of his parents’ cellphones – which was the last time anyone ever heard from him. Charlie has officially been missing since October 12, 2007, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions. But here’s where it gets even stranger -- shortly before his disappearance, Charlie legally changed him name to Neo Babson Maximus, adding another layer of complexity to this already perplexing case. This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale). In February of 2010, a distraught biology professor at the University of Alabama-Huntsville opened fire at a staff meeting, killing three colleagues and critically wounding three others. The professor, Dr. Amy Bishop, taught at least five different courses in the Department of Biology, and she had been employed at the university since 2003. In 2009, six years after she was hired, Dr. Bishop went through a rigorous tenure application process and review, but her tenure was ultimately denied in March of 2009. This meant that her teaching appointment at the University of Alabama would not be renewed when her contract ended the next year in 2010. Bishop quickly appealed the tenure-committee’s decision to university administration, but that, too, was denied. Nearly a year later, Bishop plotted a revenge attack against her department. In February of 2010, a distraught biology professor at the University of Alabama-Huntsville opened fire at a staff meeting, killing three colleagues and critically wounding three others. The professor, Dr. Amy Bishop, taught at least five different courses in the Department of Biology, and she had been employed at the university since 2003. In 2009, six years after she was hired, Dr. Bishop went through a rigorous tenure application process and review, but her tenure was ultimately denied in March of 2009. This meant that her teaching appointment at the University of Alabama would not be renewed when her contract ended the next year in 2010. Bishop quickly appealed the tenure-committee’s decision to university administration, but that, too, was denied. Nearly a year later, Bishop plotted a revenge attack against her department. This vulnerability becomes stark when young adults navigate relationships without the compass of prior experience. Think about it: this stage of life is often labeled in academic research as emerging adulthood, a time when they’re not quite kids, but not fully adults either, and they are just trying to figure things out. In this episode, I unravel the complexities surrounding this vulnerable age group through the story of 18-year-old college freshman Alexandra Kogut, who, for over a year, was in a seemingly picture-perfect relationship with 21-year-old Clayton Whittemore. While their friends and family perceived their relationship as flawless, the reality behind closed doors was far from it. Eventually, Alex and Clayton’s relationship took the darkest of turns, which revealed the silent struggles of dating violence – a reality that would ultimately claim a young life. In October 2022, a cross-state rivalry took a bleak turn when University of New Mexico student Brandon Travis and his friends visited New Mexico State University in Las Cruces for the two schools’ annual football showdown. What started as a clash between fans ended with Travis on the losing side of the scuffle, which sparked a chilling chain of events. The next month, when New Mexico State traveled to Albuquerque for a basketball face-off, Travis and his friends, still nursing a grudge, hatched out a revenge plot, which specifically targeted men’s basketball player Mike Peake. The plan, however, went awry, resulting in tragedy – leaving one student dead, and another severely injured. In August of 2016, Ithaca College student Anthony Nazaire embarked on what should have been a promising sophomore year as a business administration major. Anthony’s journey from a challenging neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, to college was a testament to his determination. The first in his family to graduate high school and pursue higher education, Anthony aspired to make a mark in the world of finance, with dreams of one day even starting his own bank. But as fate would have it, his aspirations were shattered during a seemingly innocent back-to-school party hosted by a fraternity at Cornell University. When the party was over and party-goers disbursed, the atmosphere took a dark turn, leading to a sudden and chaotic altercation. In a selfless act to protect a friend, Anthony found himself caught in the midst of the melee (may-lay). Tragically, his attempt to save a life cost him his own. Anthony Nazaire was lethally stabbed, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. Join me as we explore the life, dreams, and tragic end of this first-generation college student from the streets of Brooklyn. And, at one institution of higher education in particular, The Ohio University in Athens, Ohio... Well, it’s said to be one of the most haunted campuses in the world. But, perhaps, one of the darkest urban legends lies within the walls of a dormitory on campus, specifically Room 428 of Wilson Hall, which has officially been sealed off to any residents living inside the building.
