They entered the apartment through an unlocked window, and what they discovered would haunt them forever: the lifeless body of their friend, Haley, lying on Tercero’s bed. When police found 24-year-old University of Florida student Michelle Herndon dead in her home, it appeared that, in an ironic twist of fate, the health-conscious young woman had suddenly and tragically passed away from natural causes. Although rare, situations like these aren’t as completely out of the ordinary as one might think. So, investigators began processing the case as such – a bizarre death due to natural circumstances. But the case took a sharp turn when the medical examiner discovered a tiny, meticulous needle prick in Michelle’s left arm, which soon led investigators to believe that Michelle had actually been murdered. In 1997, Vincennes University student Brook Baker was raped and brutally murdered in her off-campus home. Police interviewed hundreds of potential suspects but were only led to dead ends. That is, until the killer struck again two years later. In 1999, Vincennes University student Erika Norman also was raped and murdered in the same way, and the killer left behind the same type of crime scene. In this episode, I tell you the story of University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth student Charles Allen Jr., affectionately known as Charlie to his friends and family. In October of 2007, Charlie made plans to attend a party with his best friend, Mason; but when the two were supposed to meet up on campus to drive to the party together, Charlie never showed. And that wasn’t the only odd, out-of-character behavior from Charlie. Earlier that same day, he had a bizarre and frantic conversation with his sister, and he left a separate, panicky, out-of-breath voicemail on each of his parents’ cellphones – which was the last time anyone ever heard from him. Charlie has officially been missing since October 12, 2007, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions. In February of 2010, a distraught biology professor at the University of Alabama-Huntsville opened fire at a staff meeting, killing three colleagues and critically wounding three others. The professor, Dr. Amy Bishop, taught at least five different courses in the Department of Biology, and she had been employed at the university since 2003. In 2009, six years after she was hired, Dr. Bishop went through a rigorous tenure application process and review, but her tenure was ultimately denied in March of 2009. This meant that her teaching appointment at the University of Alabama would not be renewed when her contract ended the next year in 2010. Bishop quickly appealed the tenure-committee’s decision to university administration, but that, too, was denied. Nearly a year later, Bishop plotted a revenge attack against her department. In August of 2016, Ithaca College student Anthony Nazaire embarked on what should have been a promising sophomore year as a business administration major. Anthony’s journey from a challenging neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, to college was a testament to his determination. The first in his family to graduate high school and pursue higher education, Anthony aspired to make a mark in the world of finance, with dreams of one day even starting his own bank. But as fate would have it, his aspirations were shattered during a seemingly innocent back-to-school party hosted by a fraternity at Cornell University. When the party was over and party-goers disbursed, the atmosphere took a dark turn, leading to a sudden and chaotic altercation. In a selfless act to protect a friend, Anthony found himself caught in the midst of the melee (may-lay). Tragically, his attempt to save a life cost him his own. Anthony Nazaire was lethally stabbed, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. But, perhaps, one of the darkest urban legends lies within the walls of a dormitory on campus, specifically Room 428 of Wilson Hall, which has officially been sealed off to any residents living inside the building. In a few days, 24-year-old Imette would turn 25, and she was on top of the world. She was a brilliant graduate student in John Jay College’s Criminal Justice program who, in only a couple months, would graduate and pursue a career in forensics and crime scene investigation. But in the early morning hours of Feb. 25, 2006, Imette was tragically met with foul play, and soon it would be her crime scene that police were investigating.
