- Ep. #397: March 15-21, 1991
Kris and David are guestless as we discuss the week that was March 15-21, 1991.
- This is a very different show from our usual, as the majority focuses on Dave Meltzer's big trip to Japan, where he attended the New Japan/WCW "Starrcade ’91 at the Tokyo Dome” show (“Japan Supershow” in the U.S.) featuring Tatsumi Fujinami defeating Ric Flair to become the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion…..sort of. We have all the news and views from that show, including the "controversy" as to just who was the real champion.
- We also discuss Dave's other tour stops including Universal Lucha Libre, All Japan Women, and the original JWP, with Dave having plenty of interesting thoughts about those shows.
- On the U.S. indie scene, we talk about Eddie Mansfield getting back into wrestling, the USWA leaving the Mid-South Coliseum, a very interesting look at the production of Texas Champion Wrestling with Gary Hart and Mickey Grant, Billy Jack Haynes going wild in Portland, and more.
- WCW and the WWF then share a section for the first time to close the show, as we talk about Sid Vicious’s contract status, the Iron Sheik returning to the WWF, Konnan coming into the WWF, Brutus Beefcake as THE MARINER, and so much more.
A very different but extremely fun episode of BTS, so listen now!!!!!

Note: This episode was recorded before the car accident that Dom was in with Joshua Bishop, Derek Dillinger, and Marino Tenaglia over the weekend. Thankfully, it looks like all four of them are going to be fine.
Kris and David are joined by "The Bone Collector" Dominic Garrini (@dgarrinibc) to discuss the week that was March 8-14, 2000.
- We start off with ECW and their Living Dangerously PPV, featuring the original insane New Jack/Vic Grimes scaffold spot, which was scary as hell, as well as Steve Corino going scorched earth on The Sandman's wife, Scotty Anton making his "debut,” the overall crazy booking and terrible production values of the show, Paul Heyman ranting to the Torch, and lots more in a very entertaining section.
- Next, we move on to the World Wrestling Federation, where Buh Buh Ray Dudley nearly kills Mae Young on an episode of Raw that also saw the return of Vince McMahon after being off TV since Stephanie’s heel turn in December, as well asthe Mean Street Posse being awesome while pursuing the Hardcore Title. We also talk some Smackdown, TSN's editing of Raw, L. Brent Bozell wackiness, the Lionel Tate murder case, and even some reviews of Beyond the Mat.
- Then we go to the UFC for one of their most controversial moments ever, as they announce the main event of their UFC 24 PPV, Kevin Randleman vs. Pedro Rizzo, had to be cancelled due to a freak accident, but didn't announce it until the time for the main event to begin despite knowing for most of the broadcast. Kris has some stories about watching that in real time, particularly with regards to his and his friends’ anger at how this went down. We also talk about the rest of the show as well some other MMA happenings.
- International is next, as All Japan gets bad news about their TV time slot, there’s a wacky shoot angle with the Great Muta in New Japan, the Rikidozan Memorial Show takes place featuring Ron Reis as B.B. JONES!!!!!!!!!!!!, Perro Aguayo returns to Arena Mexico after eight years away, Chicky Starr jumps from the WWC to IWAPR, and tons more.
- We then go back to the U.S.A. for the indie scene, featuring early JAPW and CZW results, Screech showing up on Memphis Championship Wrestling to declare his love for The Kat/Stacy Carter, Dave Meltzer attends an All Pro Wrestling show, and more.
- WCW closes out the show, as we talk about their big U.K. tour, where morale was in the toilet despite the trip doing very well financially. We also talk about a couple of crazy-assed episodes of Thunder and Nitro featuring Team Package trying to recruit Arn Anderson and so much more insanity that makes it a must listen section.
Helluva show here, folks, and a long one, too, so buckle up!!!!

Happy [preferred winter solstice-adjacent holiday], everyone! As has become something of a tradition, we’re releasing a past deep dive Patreon special episode of Between the Sheets for free! Well, actually, we’re giving you TWO Patreon specials for free, as this is a supercut of our two shows covering Kip Frey’s few months running WCW!
For dozens more deep dives like this, including our six-part ECW on TNN series, our two-part Death of ECW series, other entries in the Paul Heyman Expanded Universe, our four-part WCW sale series, our four-part series on the 1992 WWF “Titangate” scandals, our classic two-part series on John Collins’ doomed MECW startup, and MUCH more, all you need to do is sign up for our Patreon at just the $5/month level ($50.40/year if you pay for a year up front) or higher by going to Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets.
----------
It's time for a new series of Patreon specials as we dive into attorney Kip Allen Frey's brief run as the Executive Vice President of World Championship Wrestling, which covered parts of January through May of 1992. In part one of two, Kris and David look at Jim Herd's forced resignation from the job, Herd scorching earth in his last meeting, Lex Luger's disappearing act, Frey's steroid policy for WCW and how it differed from the WWF's, who got fired or reassigned and why, what Frey got right, Frey's trust in Dusty Rhodes, Frey AND Dusty(!) going on the record with Mark Madden in the Torch, the many things attributed to Bill Watts that were actually Frey's doing, the infamous "best match" performance bonuses, rebuilding the calamitous live event department, Jim Crockett regaining and losing some power in short order, Lex Luger's transformation into a neon sign, and much, much more.
This is a tremendous show, and we hope you all enjoy it!
----------
It's time for our second and final dive into attorney Kip Allen Frey's brief run as the Executive Vice President of World Championship Wrestling, covering April through the very beginning of June of 1992. Topics include how it should have been obvious to Frey that he was never a permanent pick, Wade Keller's "Torch Talk" interview with Frey, Jim Ross's thoughts on Frey in his own "Torch Talk" and if he knew that Bill Watts was being hired, Lex Luger showing up on WWF TV, Jack Petrik being reassigned to the Cartoon Network, the launch and original format of WCW Saturday Night, WCW's rumored negotiations with Bill Fralic, a review of the wrestlers' Frey-mandated anti-steroid PSAs, Rick Rude arguing with Dr. David Black about steroids, Bill Watts as new WCW boss coming out of nowhere, Frey quitting to be reassigned within TBS, and much, much more.
This is another fantastic show, and we hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it.

Kris and David are joined by BOTH Beau James (@KingofKingsport) and Robert O'Connor (@ghostofquinones) for a special holiday season episode where we discuss the week-and-a-half that was December 11-21, 1989.
- We start off with the NWA, talking about Starrcade ’89, a.k.a. FUTURE SHOCK, as we have Dave Meltzer's report from watching on TV as well as Steve Beverly's from being there live at the Omni. We talk about the IRON MAN round robin tournaments and how damn silly it was with how this show could've been so much better without them. We also run down all the other major happenings going on in the NWA as well.
- O'Connor waxes poetic about his lovely Canada in the International section as we have a LONG TV taping for the WFWA in Winnipeg plus the end of Stampede Wrestling as we knew it and why all of that happened.
- Then we come back to the U.S.A. to talk about the Indie scene, where we go deep into Eddie Gilbert & Paul E. Dangerously's CONSORTIUM of wrestling promotions that was allegedly in the mix, specifically Beau laying out how it only makes sense as an almost master plan to get Eddie fired from the NWA. We also hear from the Master of Pain and Soultaker in Memphis, trade stories about Randall Brown and his "kidnapping,” look back at Joe Pedicino proposing to Boni Blackstone, and a whole lot more.
- We close with the WWF, where they tape NO HOLDS BARRED: THE MATCH for a NO HOLDS BARRED CHRISTMAS, the tag titles changing hands at a TV taping, Macho King, Sherri, and Zeus on the Brother Love Show, and much more.
We hope you enjoy this show, as when you have both Beau and O'Connor together, it's an epic one.

- Next, we go international, starting with the Real World Tag League in AJPW featuring Giant Baba and Andre the Giant vs. LAND OF THE GIANTS, WWF guys coming to Super World Sports, Kamala in Mexico, and much more.
- Then we come back to the U.S. for a wild story involving Luna Vachon and her boys using a stun gun, Joe Pedicino talking to everyone as he is getting ready to start his promotion, the end of World Class in Texas right as Gary Hart brings "class" back to the Metroplex with his TCW or TWF or TWFCW or whatever it was, Chris Love running his short-lived full-time UCW territory in Kansas, and all sorts of other wackiness.
- We close with the NWA, featuring Ole Anderson being fired as the booker as Dusty Rhodes looms in the shadows, along with other office news and notes. We also have Michael Wallstreet handling some business, Ole Anderson's swan song as the Black Scorpion on TV, and more WCW EVERYBODY moments as always.
It’s lways a fun show when we do this era, and this is no different, so take a listen!!

Kris & David are joined by Mark Coale (@black_bile) to discuss the week that was November 30-December 6, 1987 which was a week he picked by upping his pledge as a member of our Patreon. You can do the samel for $25 (if not appearing on the show), $50 (to sit in for a segment), or $100 (to sit in for the whole show as Mark did).
- Mark wanted us to do this show mainly because it has one of the few weeks where the Observer covered the short-lived World Organization Wrestling promotion based out of the Pensacola area, and he wanted to talk about his love for their strange TV show. We go through the talent and the angles that were going on, plus Mark talks us through a broad history of the promotion as well.
- Another major theme in our week is Dave Meltzer's second ever trip to Japan, featuring his first time attending All Japan Women shows, which, according to him, changed his wrestling opinions forever. Plus he went to AJPW and NJPW shows as well, which we cover extensively.
- Other major topics we touch on include Ted DiBiase wanting to buy the WWF Championship from Hulk Hogan, Lex Luger turning on the Four Horsemen, the Midnight Rockers turning heel in Memphis, and lots more, plus the new Patreon show preview is included at the end of the episode.
This is a fantastic 80's show, so LISTEN NOW!!!!

Kris & David are back to discuss the (almost-)week that was November 15-20, 1995.
- We start by going over the cover story of the week’s Observer, which summarizes all of the big stories of that week, before moving on to…
- WCW, which ran the first-ever Hulk Hogan vs. Sting match on Nitro at the Macon Coliseum, which Kris attended live in person and completely flopped at the box office.
- We then move on to the international scene, including the opening night of AJPW’s Real World Tag League at Korakuen Hall, the announcement of the second Super J-Cup, the final Pro Wrestling Fujiwara Gumi show before the launch of BattlARTS, Ultimo Dragon vs. Chris Jericho in a theater in Morris, Manitoba, and more.
- Back in the United States, we take a look at the first Battlecade: Extreme Fighting PPV and all of the drama that led to it being moved from Brooklyn to North Carolina at the last minute, as well as how it had an overall more skilled group of fighters than most UFC cards from that era.
- On the indie scene, we look at a wild day in the life of Sabu, as he worked an afternoon show against Hakushi for Dennis Coralluzzo’s NWA New Jersey hours before returning to ECW at November to Remember, as well as SMW being days away from folding, as well as the USWA experimenting with moving the weekly Memphis house show to Wednesday night, Ron Skoler suing an indie promoter, and more.
- We close with the WWF, featuring an eventful Survivor Series where Bret Hart regained the WWF Championship from Diesel and Diesel shifted to being a tweener, as well as the infamous angle the next night on Raw where Shawn Michaels collapsed while wrestling Owen Hart. Oh, and the New York Post breaks the story that Vince McMahon is being investigated for witness tampering in the steroid trial.
All that and much more on this week’s Between the Sheets!

Kris & David are back with another Patron-requested episode of BTS, as our guest Patron Tyler Gignac (@Tyler_Gignac) wanted us to talk about the week that was November 9-15, 1997. The reason why he picked this week was because it featured the first ever WWF live event he ever went to in his life in Barrie, Ontario, which was also the first ever WWF show in that city, period.
- We start with the WWF what’s naturally a crazy section because we talk about Survivor Series ’97, though like last week we don't go in-depth on the Bret Hart drama outside of Tyler giving his thoughts on the situation. We also talk about Raw the next night featuring Shawn Michaels going wild, the Raw taping the night after that, and house shows attended by both Tyler (Barrie) and Bix (MSG) that week. Again, there’s a lot to talk about here, so you don't want to miss this.
- We then go international. where Masahiro Chono gives a worked shoot interview to Tokyo Sports putting over All Japan, we actually have IWA Kokusai results for once and get to talk about VIOLENCE REVENGER, and new joshi promotions are starting up in the form of NEO and Arsion. Then we go to Latin America, talking about early Toryumon guys at Arena Mexico, Fake Razor Ramon feuding with Carlos Colon in Puerto Rico, and a lot more.
- Then, after a very short U.S. indie section, we close with WCW, talking about Starrcade ticket sales booming, Eric Bischoff announcing Bret Hart’s impending arrival live on Nitro (which was a crazy show in of itself), and Hulk Hogan getting worried about the political ramifications of Bret coming in.
Another 1997 show in the books and this is one you can't miss!!!!

Kris & David are back for another episode of BTS, and we’re joined by Mikey Blanton (@BLPMikey) of Black Label Pro to discuss the week that was November 2-8, 1997.
We will not be talking about the heavy Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels drama on this show. If you want to listen to that, then go to our Patreon, and by subscribing to the $5 tier or above, you can listen to our ongoing deep dive into the Montreal Screwjob and all the other audio we have in our archive.
- We start with the WWF, where we talk about what the real cause of Brian Pillman's death was…and it wasn't necessarily what was reported at the time. We also go over the Raw before Survivor Series, where Shawn Michaels cut quite the promo, and all sorts of other shenanigans, featuring the debut of Steve Blackman and the awesomeness of Dustin Rhodes.
- We then go international to discuss New Japan's big show at the Fukuoka Dome and all the other news and results from around the world.
- Then we come back to the U.S. for the indie scene, featuring ECW's Ultimate Jeopardy 97 show at the ECW Arena with a full—and I mean a full—rundown of everything going on there, as well as a wild and crazy story involving Dory Funk Jr. and Dan Severn at a NWA Florida show and whether it was a shoot or a work.
- Finally, we close with WCW, where we talk about the upcoming political wars wuth Bret Hart coming in, Eric Bischoff's hatred of tag teams, Nitro in Philly which had a ton of ex-ECW talent, Bischoff shooting on USA Network on the air, news of the upcoming Thursday night TBS show, and tons more.
A strong show, and we have more 1997 coming next week, so listen now!!!
