  • Episode 31: Why I Walk, featuring Podcast Editor James Osborn

You ever do something you thought was risky, but it ended up making you more secure? That's exactly what I'm diving into on this episode of "On Your Terms" with my podcast editor, James Osborn. When we met, I had yet to launch this podcast or embark on the Walk for Water. Now, James is writing snarky comments into my brilliant content and sabotaging my podcast.

But I've made peace with it. And you should too.

In this episode, we explore the beginning of Walk for Water and how all the turns and twists that initially seem like derailments ended up becoming blessings. From being defrauded of $1.5 million to getting injured on day two of my walk across Africa, the core On Your Terms principles of flexibility, commitment to the cause and resilience have been on full display in the Walk for Water story.

You'll hear about my strategy to solve the world's water problem, and why my belief in God’s unlimited budget and power gives me the freedom to take these risks. I want you to walk away from this episode knowing that adversity can be a positive force and that living life on your terms is all about embracing your unique journey.

  • Episode 28: Going Beyond the Byline with Sonya Hollins

Sonya Hollins is an amazing author and a gifted publisher, but after hearing her story I think the journey she took to become those things carries just as much weight for On Your Terms listeners as the finish line. Sonya shares her inspiring journey, starting from a childhood dream of becoming a Pulitzer Prize winner to becoming an award-winning journalist and now entrepreneur. What I find fascinating and powerful about her story is how she constantly had to fight for herself--and then realize that she needed to fight for others who follow behind her.

Sonya also introduces her "Merze Tate Explorers" program, a nonprofit travel writers organization for girls, where she empowers young women to find their voices and prepare for college and careers through journalism. Sonya has lived life on her terms and fought through plenty of adversity to get there--I hope you find inspiration from her story and encouragement to get your life on your terms.

  • Episode 27: When Car Troubles Require Military Patience

I've counted them all up. Eight total walk interruptions now, each of them completely unique to themselves. As my mama says, 'the beginning of the mission takes longer than the rest,' and I'm finding that true--yet I'm not phased by it.

This bonus episode is designed for you to be a part of the Walk for Water in a couple of ways. First, we are planning our steps live in this podcast. No faking it for the camera. Eva J. (my partner and driver for this journey, Evans Jr.) and I are making decisions live during this episode. The big one: what are we going to do about the car that has surprisingly come up with a couple of different issues. Hear how we thought we had overcome one...only to create/uncover another. Only this new issue is presenting us with no check engine lights or obvious visible fixes.

If you know anything about the Toyota Allion, what might cause a rough idle and acceleration issues, or if you know someone who could offer informed advice, please reach out to me on Facebook or IG.

You may have also heard me use the term "military patience" in a past episode. I'll give you an explanation of what that means and why it's an important concept for us right now on the Walk for Water (and how you can use it to live life On Your Terms as well).

  • Episode 26: How to Gain “Conversation Agility” to Develop Stronger Connections, with Nina Perez

There is power in the words of others, but how you let that power affect your future is entirely up to you. In part 2 of my conversation with Nina Perez, she brings the heat when it comes to not allowing yourself to be impacted by the criticisms of others. As Nina puts it, “When you’re living life on your own terms, it’s going to be loud…we need to nurture the voice that says “I’m gonna continue because this matters to me so much more.” Become a charismatic person and develop conversation agility so you can live life on your terms.

  • Episode 25: Pivoting on an Injured Foot

It's not lost on me that I set out to walk 5,000+ miles and on day 2, an injury has stopped me right in my tracks. This episode is more than just an update on the "Walk for Water". In fact, my partner Evans Chitukutuku and I devoted this episode to explaining what's happened, what's happening now and how this walk has been permanently changed. While change can be scary, I have been trusting God through the entire preparation stage of the Walk for Water--and I'm not going to stop now. Hear how police encounters in Namibia, a foot injury and a level 11 commitment have transformed the Walk for Water in ways I didn't expect--and how I'm thankful for every minute of it.

Make sure you stay to the end of the episode as Evans Jr.'s advice to the listener had me laughing so hard I nearly forgot to end the episode!

  • Episode 23: When One Road Closes, Another Opens with Evans Chitukutuku

Ever plan something completely and feel confident that you've got everything figured out...and then it all blows up in your face? That's what I experienced when I landed in Zambia to begin this 2 year Walk for Water journey when Evans, the man who was going to be the driver to accompany me along the way, discovered he wasn't able to make the journey. But God had another plan--and his name was also Evans!

Today on the podcast I'm interviewing Evans Chitukutuku Jr., who is now preparing to take his father's place and join me on the Walk for Water. I've said often on this podcast that you're going to be coming with me on this walk--and this podcast is exhibit A of that! I'm interviewing Evans not only as a guest, but as a way to get to know him in depth for the first time. Will he be up for the task of partnering with me on this journey? Let's find out together!
