The hosts explore her upbringing, her decision to pass for white, and her successful career in building the Morgan Library collection. Despite the challenges she faced, Greene was able to navigate the complexities of race and society to achieve success in the Gilded Age. Next, Miriam introduces Bridget Biddy Mason (American, 1818–1891), a remarkable woman born into slavery. They explore her journey to California and her fight for freedom. Mason, a former slave, became a real estate mogul and left a lasting legacy. She acquired significant wealth and properties in Los Angeles, which she passed down to her descendants. Mason's generosity extended beyond her own family, and in work as a nurse, midwife, and philanthropist, she also gave back to her community and future generations.
