Season 4
1h 7m | Dec 21, 2023

This week, in the spirit of the holidays, Lavetta tells the little known life story of author Catherine Dickens, wife of Charles Dickens; and Miriam covers the extraordinary life of author and poet, Katherine Lee Bates.

-----

In this episode, Lavetta introduces writer Catherine Dickens (English, 1815–1879), the wife of renowned author Charles Dickens. The hosts explore Dickens' early life, her marriage to Charles, and her own creative endeavors, including a cookbook and writing under the pen name Lady Maria Clutterbuck. They delve into Charles' resentment towards her, his alleged infidelity, and Dickens' decision to file for separation. And they explore the public perception of Dickens and how Charles manipulated the narrative to paint her as an unfit wife and mother. Miriam then shares the story of "America the Beautiful" author Katherine Lee Bates (American, 1859–1929), who additionally wrote the poem "Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride." Bates is often associated with the character of Mrs. Claus, but she was also a social activist and advocate for equality and peace. Both Catherine Dickens and Katherine Lee Bates faced challenges and fought for their own identities and reputations in a society that often marginalized them.
