We set out to round out women&#39;s lives, to make the experience of being a woman as interesting and as complicated as it is in reality. We are not historians, but we are interested in educating ourselves, others, and be funny doing it! We thrive on expanding what it means to be a woman, and on sharing the stories of remarkable women&#39;s lives. In this week’s season finale, in honor of the rap beef between Kendrick and Drake, Lavetta covers Chinese hip hop artist, Vava; and in honor of transformative filmmaking, Miriam covers British screenwriter, Janet Green.-----In this episode, Lavetta introduces hip-hop artist Viva (Chinese, born 1995), who incorporates traditional Chinese elements into her music. This week, Miriam covers the original Hollywood “It Girl,” actress Clara Bow; and Lavetta covers the inspiration for the character Mariko-sama from the hit show “Shogun,” Hosokawa Tama.-----In this episode, Miriam introduces silent film actress Clara Bow (American, 1905–1965). The hosts discuss Bow&#39;s difficult childhood, her entry into the film industry, and her rise to fame as the embodiment of the flapper. An iconic Hollywood actress known for her roles in silent films, Bow faced challenges in her personal life, including controlling producers and tabloid scandals, but she remained true to herself and was a trailblazer in portraying strong, independent women on screen. Next, Lavetta introduces legendary noblewoman Hosokawa Tama (Japanese, 1563–1600), also known as Hosokawa Gracia and Tomoko Gracia. Not much is known about her early life. She was the daughter of a powerful daimyo, raised in a castle, and married into the influential Hosokawa family. After her husband&#39;s death, she was caught in the power struggle between rival factions and was ordered to be taken hostage. However, to preserve her honor and the honor of her family, she chose to take her own life instead. The hosts discuss her origin of an upper-class upbringing with expectations to marry well. Cosby dropped out of college to marry a struggling comedian, and then supported his career and managed their finances. His wandering eye resulted in a child, and Cosby moved the family to Massachusetts to shield them from his toxic behavior. She returned to school and earned a doctorate, and played a crucial role in helping him pivot to clean, family-friendly comedy, including the creation and success of The Cosby Show, which portrayed a middle-class black family and challenged stereotypes. Despite the allegations of his infidelity and sexual assault, Cosby remained loyal and defended her husband publicly. The hosts discuss the challenges she faced in a predominantly white industry and the impact of racism on her career. Martell started her career as part of the singing group the Anglos and later became a solo artist. She signed with Plantation Records, a controversial name for a record label, and released several singles that gained moderate success on the country music charts. Despite these obstacles, Martell made history as the first black female artist to perform on the Grand Ole Opry radio broadcast. This week, Miriam covers the difficult yet accomplished life of writer and Elizabethan era sci-fi author, Margaret Cavendish; and Lavetta covers the surprising and hilarious origins of the Rap/Hip Hop beef thru the life story of Rap/Hip Hop pioneer, Roxanne Shante.----- In this episode, Miriam introduces philosopher, scientist, and writer Margaret Cavendish (English 1623–1673), a high society duchess who made significant contributions to philosophy and literature. Unusual for a time when female writers stayed anonymous, Cavendish published under her own name and she wrote on early modern science, power, gender, and natural philosophy, including one of the first science fiction books. Next, Lavetta introduces original female rapper Roxanne Shante (American, born 1969), known for her role in one of the first rap beefs on record. Shante rose to fame at the age of 14 with her hit song &#39;Roxanne&#39;s Revenge.&#39; Growing up in the projects, the hip hop artist discovered her talent for rap battles and caught the attention of record producer Marley Marl. Together, they created a diss track that sparked the Roxanne Wars, leading to over 55 response records. Despite facing challenges and exploitation in the industry, Shante continued to make music and mentor young female artists. This week, Lavetta tells the unbelievable story of one of the most shameless scam artists ever, Big Bertha Heyman; and Miriam tells the even more unbelievable story of Ethiopian empress, Taytu Betul.-----In this episode, Lavetta introduces notorious scammer and con artist Bertha Heyman (American, 1851–1927), known for her ability to deceive and swindle wealthy men. Lavetta describes Heyman&#39;s scams, which ranged from stealing watches and jewelry to forging checks and bonds. Despite multiple arrests and convictions, she continued to scam people and even managed to con a Wall Street broker out of a significant sum of money. One of her most audacious scams involved posing as a wealthy widow looking for a Jewish husband. She managed to obtain expensive gifts and credit from suitors before disappearing with the valuables. The hosts discuss Heyman&#39;s ability to charm, which even gave her press darling status. Next, Miriam introduces Empress Taytu Betul (Ethiopian, 1851–1918), who played a significant role in the unification of Ethiopia and the Battle of Adwa. She was known for her intelligence, diplomacy, and efforts to improve the lives of her people. Hosted by Lavetta Cannon and Miriam Lipner-Brienik, Notorious Women is a weekly comedy podcast about some of history's most notorious women. 

We set out to round out women's lives, to make the experience of being a woman as interesting and as complicated as it is in reality. We are not historians, but we are interested in educating ourselves, others, and be funny doing it! We thrive on expanding what it means to be a woman, and on sharing the stories of remarkable women's lives.
