  • Jennifer Salzman: Alcohol addiction & ADHD coping strategies

    Episode 140 with Jennifer Salzman.

    “The alcohol was dulling the anxiety and the stress, but it was also dulling the joy and the happiness.”

    When Jennifer was diagnosed with adult ADHD in her 40s she realized that she had spent more than 20 years self-medicating her symptoms with alcohol. Drinking was the easiest and fastest way to shut off the constant chatter in her brain. She also discovered that alcohol abuse among people with ADHD is much more common than it is in people without the condition. 

    Jennifer now coaches others to help them find freedom from alcohol, gain a new outlook on life, and improve their relationship with themselves and their neurodivergent brains. 

    We talk about our own experiences with alcohol abuse, the link between ADHD and substance abuse, the dangers of mixing alcohol with stimulant medications, why AA isn’t always neurodivergent-friendly, and some of the ways we can develop healthier coping mechanisms for managing ADHD.

  • María-Victoria Albina: People pleasing, codependency & emotional outsourcing

    Episode 139 with María-Victoria Albina.

    “I'm a ‘get it done now or put it in a doom box and forget about it forever’ kind of gal.”

    María-Victoria is a Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner, a Somatic Master Life Coach, and the host of the popular Feminist Wellness podcast.

    She describes her narrative as the typical “kid with ADHD” story. As a child, she was in the gifted & talented program but always getting in trouble because of “behavioral issues.” It wasn’t until she was falling behind in grad school that she was diagnosed, and like so many others say, she finally understood her non-linear thinking habits.

    We talk about her winding career path from midwife to herbalist to nurse practitioner to somatic life coach & meditation guide. We also discuss somatic practices and how they can support ADHD adults when it comes to regulating our nervous systems and reconnecting with our intuition.

  • Michelle Swerin: Anxiety, text therapy & meditating on our laundry piles

    Episode 137 with Michelle Swerin.

    “I can't tell you how many jobs I had as a teenager. I mean, easily 20. I was never fired, I just lost interest really quickly.”

    Michelle is a licensed therapist, certified meditation teacher, and certified instructional designer. She is also a neurodivergent mother of two and the founder of Create Space Health, a telehealth clinic focused on incorporating meditation into mental health therapy.

    Michelle saw big changes in her own life when she began practicing meditation. Since then, she has become a certified meditation teacher and has been able to merge her clinical training and meditation experience into her practice to help those struggling with mental health challenges. She is passionate about bringing mindfulness and meditation into the clinical space, where she believes it can have a larger impact on the treatment of mental health disorders.

    Michelle and I talk about ADHD-friendly approaches to meditation, and we also talk about high-functioning anxiety and the negative effects of masking, and how meditation and mindfulness therapy can help.

  • Georgia Yexley: Professional disclosure & work/life balance

    Episode 136 with Georgia Yexley.

    “After my diagnosis, I was flooded with memories. There was all this footage that I was scrolling through and analyzing with a new lens.”

    Georgia is an inclusive sustainable mobility expert and advocate based in London. Having worked with hundreds of cities across the globe on achieving their sustainable transport aims, she now advises the public, private, and third sector on achieving inclusive sustainable mobility, through her business, Loud Mobility.

    Following the sudden loss of a loved one, Georgia went on a journey of self-discovery that led to her ADHD diagnosis. She wrote an open letter to her industry peers opening up about her experiences and diagnosis, and has begun the process of integrating this new awareness into her work. 

    We talk all about the outcomes of her self-disclosure, her road to establishing professional boundaries, and how she manages work/life balance with her new business. 

    Georgia shares how the best thing she gained from her diagnosis was a capacity for self-compassion she never realized was dearly lacking, and a greater awareness of how important it is to live in alignment with her values.

  • Diana Costea: Authenticity, acceptance & the road less traveled

    Episode 135 with Diana Costea.

    “Society wants us to focus on one thing and do it well, but that will never be me.”

    Diana is a 22-year-old from Romania. She has a degree in psychology and is currently volunteering in Turkey as a youth worker and English teacher with the European Solidarity Corps Program.

    Diana discovered her ADHD a little over a year ago, and since then, she feels she finally has the courage to allow herself to be different and instead of minimizing or masking it, to befriend her neurodivergence and help others see the world through different angles.

    Diana has also started a career as a personal development coach, where she supports and guides young or aspiring entrepreneurs in their career journeys.

  • Abby Lane: Stress, overwhelm & panic attacks

    Abby is a creative entrepreneur, furniture designer, wife, and mom to an amazing 9-year-old son.

  • Pippa Simou: Why ADHD looks different in girls

    Episode 133 with Pippa Simou.

    “I think I’ve been tired my entire life. It’s absolutely exhausting having this brain.”

    Pippa is a former teacher, now ADHD advocate, trainer, and coach, and the founder of The ADD-vantage, a support service hub for girls and women with ADHD. 

    When Pippa’s son was diagnosed with ADHD, it never occurred to her that she also might have ADHD because his presentation was so different from hers. And while she was aware that she struggled with inattentiveness and could be quite impulsive, she had no idea that was part of ADHD, too. It wasn’t until she tried out a QbCheck screening that she discovered — surprise — she also had ADHD. She was diagnosed in 2017, and her teenage daughter was also diagnosed shortly thereafter.

    We talk about some of the reasons why ADHD is so commonly overlooked in girls and women, and the work she’s doing to help inspire girls and women to live well and recognize and lean into their strengths. We also talk about what teachers can do to help girls, and why so many teachers tend to have ADHD, whether they know it or not.

  • Vanessa Torre: Unmasking & rebuilding after a midlife crisis

    Episode 132 with Vanessa Torre.

    Vanessa is a writer, speaker, and coach living her best life in Phoenix, Arizona. About a year ago at the of age 48, Vanessa quit her 20+ year corporate career to pursue her creative passions full-time. She sold her house in the suburbs, moved to an apartment in downtown Phoenix, and turned her writing and editing side hustle into a full-time business.

    It was during that time that she was diagnosed with ADHD and she now helps other women, particularly those late diagnosed with ADHD, who feel stuck in midlife to navigate this amazing time of growth and exploration to make huge changes that lead to a more creative and fulfilling life led with intention.

    We chat about unmasking and self-acceptance after a late diagnosis and our theories as to why so many women are diagnosed during perimenopause. We also talk about the stages of a late ADHD diagnosis — including denial, curiosity, elation, grief, resentment, grit, and advocacy work. And Vanessa shares what it’s been like to date for the first time as an unmasked woman.

    Annie is a late-identified Autistic ADHD disability rights lawyer and internationally recognized neurodiversity advocate based in Australia.

    Annie is also a "twice exceptional" adult (or 2e meaning gifted and disabled) and we discuss the concept of 2e and how giftedness can mask and hide your disability growing up, leaving many kids undiagnosed and unsupported.

    Between speaking engagements and producing her own wonderful podcast, Princess and the Pea, Annie is an Autistic Empowerment Coach and Neuroaccessibility Consultant working with the Australian Government, not-for-profit sector and more to provide her unique expertise on disability rights, neurodiversity, and public policy.

    Annie & I talk about how an initial diagnosis of PTSD led to a dual diagnosis of Autism & ADHD. And we talk about how she distinguishes between the two as well as the symptoms of some chronic illnesses, and how she has learned to advocate for herself to get the support she needs, and now helps others do the same.

  • Anita Robertson: Explaining your ADHD to your non-ADHD partner

    Episode 130 with Anita Robertson.

    “What’s hard for us is easy for everybody else. And what’s hard for everyone else is really easy for us.”

    Anita is a psychotherapist in Austin, Texas, and the author of ADHD & Us: A Couple’s Guide to Loving and Living with Adult ADHD

    Anita works with adults and couples, and she created the ADHD Relationship Bootcamp to help neurodiverse couples develop new skills to communicate effectively and improve their relationships. She also works with ADHD adults to make their environments ADHD-friendly: from executive functioning supports to sensory needs.

    I reached out to Anita because while there seems to be plenty of advice out there on living with an ADHD partner, I haven’t seen a lot of books that address what it’s like to be the ADHD partner, especially as a woman. Many of us who are diagnosed in adulthood have difficulty explaining our ADHD traits and experiences, especially to our non-ADHD partners. Anita & I talk all about some of the more common stressors in relationships — like clutter or parenthood — and she describes the 5 ADHD relationship pillars and how we can embrace a growth mindset to improve communication and advocate for our needs.

  • Marie Ng: Focus, time management & living the llama life

    Episode 129 with Marie Ng.

    “My brain can get foggy. When thereʼs too much happening and my brain canʼt process everything, thatʼs when I zone out and just ignore everything.”

    Marie lives in Melbourne, and she is the founder of Llama Life, a desktop productivity app that helps you work THROUGH your to-do list, not just make never-ending ones.

    Marie was diagnosed with ADHD over a decade ago, and ever since then has been on a mission to figure out ways to help herself get things done.

    When she couldn't find a tool that worked for her brain, she decided to teach herself how to code by watching YouTube videos; Llama Life is the first app she designed and developed by herself from scratch.

    Marie & I talk about her diagnosis story, and some of the common struggles many of us have regulating focus and attention, especially when it comes to tasks that aren’t interesting for our brains. And we also talk about time-boxing and how and why it’s such a helpful tool for our kind of brains. 

    And then I spend a lot of time simply gushing over Llama Life because I’ve been using it for a while now and I’ve just been blown away by how productive I am when using Llama Life!

  • Meghann Birks: Embodiment practices & overcoming shame

    Episode 127 with Meghann Birks.

    “I remember always being surprised when people would say, ‛Stop interrupting!’ because I didn’t even know I was doing it.”

    Meghann is a Certified Professional Coach, embodiment educator and Steel Mace flow teacher based in Australia. She was diagnosed with ADHD at 38 (to nobody's great surprise) and now supports women in midlife who are seeking to show up as all of who they are — the joyful, the messy and everything in between. 

    She describes her work as "where the science meets the soul" and uses a combination of modalities to help her clients discern what they really want in life, and how to get it, using their neurodivergence as an asset in the work.

    As a trauma-informed somatic practitioner, she is incredibly passionate about helping women address the feelings of shame and sadness that can come up when diagnosed with ADHD as adults. As liberating as it is to have the "Aha! THAT'S why I do/think/feel this way..." moment, the grief that arises when we look back on the decades that were shaped by fear, anger and misunderstanding can be overwhelming. 

    Meghann & I talk all about managing shame and grief after a diagnosis, as well as embodiment practices and learning ways to sit with and move through our heavy emotions.

  • Susan Young: Reinvention after a midlife diagnosis

    “There are so many women in midlife or older who are undiagnosed. As awareness grows, more and more people in midlife are getting diagnosed.”

    Susan is a certified holistic life coach, multi-passionate artist, and the founder of Triple Moon Coaching. She specializes in midlife reinvention for women over 50. Her recent ADHD diagnosis at the age of 56 was a complete shock and the missing piece of a complex puzzle! 

    As an empty nester, divorcee, and domestic violence survivor who has first-hand experience with codependency, sobriety, and now ADHD, Susan knows a thing or two about starting over late in life. 

    As a holistic coach, she believes transformation happens from the inside out and is a big fan of using creative right-brain exercises to stimulate our non-verbal genius.

  • Raelene Sebastian: Mosh pits, military spouses & dismantling stigma within families

    Episode 124 with Raelene Sebastian.

    “I read a list of symptoms and tears just streamed out of my eyes. There was such relief but also sadness — like, how did I never know this?”

    Rae is a 25-year-old Australian-born Filipino woman and a military spouse who works as a Recruitment Consultant in an agency that hires childcare educators in Sydney.

    A former childcare educator herself, Rae has supported children and families from all diverse backgrounds and helped families with their children's diagnoses long before making the connection in her own life. 

    Rae advocates for consent, mental health, military spouses, and lately ADHD in women since being diagnosed in November of 2022. 

    She also loves strawberries, frequenting thrift stores, walking her sausage dog to the beach and going on alphabet dates with her husband.

    We talk all about hyper-fixations, dopamine dressing, life as a military spouse, and how her diagnosis has allowed her to help her family members better understand neurodivergence.

  • Denisha Michele Seals: Complex PTSD and childhood sexual trauma

    Denisha is a spoken word artist, award-winning filmmaker, and author from Omaha, Nebraska. A survivor of childhood sexual abuse and trauma, she advocates for more awareness and understanding of the emotional toll abuse victims experience, particularly children of color. Using the power of her pen to lift the voices of the marginalized and victimized, her uplifting stories inspire readers of all ages to be strong, fearless, and full of hope.

  • Emily Weinberg: Self-concept & the power of reframing our ADHD

    Episode 122 with Emily Weinberg.

    “Sometimes we just ramble and talk in circles. I frequently have to stop myself and ask, Did that make any sense?”

    Emily is currently a stay-at-home mom of 2 four-year-olds. She was diagnosed with ADHD in 2021 at the age 36.

    Emily reached out to me and had this to say: “At the start of my diagnosis, while I loved listening to your show, sometimes it would actually make me feel a little worse about my own ADHD. While it's so great to listen to so many successful and inspiring women, I would sometimes think "how are they all doing so well despite all these challenges we both face and I feel like I'm just flailing?" Even some of them who had been diagnosed for just as long or less time than me.”

    Emily wanted to share her perspective, as “the one who is also a bit lost in life, and really trying to get a grip on her symptoms and self-esteem, while taking care of 2 toddlers and trying to figure out what she is doing with the rest of her life. It's really great listening to the women who have already risen and seemingly have it figured out, but sometimes it's also validating listening to the women who don't have it all figured out yet, who are stuck in the muck right with them, but are slowly beginning to find their way out of it.”

    Through her own coach and the coaching program she has been in for 2 years, Emily has learned a tremendous amount about how her own brain works and how to begin embracing it. Coaching not only changed her life in the most impactful way, it also led her to discover her own passion for coaching. She recently began training to become an ADHD coach and she wants to give back to the ADHD community by educating, supporting, and guiding other adults who suspect they have it, or those who are diagnosed and ready to learn more about their ADHD.  

    This has to be one of my favorite interviews I’ve done on this show and I’m sure after you listen, you’ll agree.
