We covered this topic on the previous incarnation of our show, but we wanted to remaster the discussion: the cruel business of misery. Your suffering can become someone else's opportunity. When there is a problem, there is also money to be made from solving that problem, but what happens when keeping that problem around becomes more profitable than fixing it entirely? In this episode, we explore the idea of whether some businesses are built around helping people escape their struggles or they are simply managing those struggles long enough to keep that cash flow flowing. Now of course, we're not claiming that every company is run by greedy psychopaths or that profit itself is evil, everyone has to make a living somehow. The concept of a business exists because people have needs, and solving those needs can make the world a better place. But incentives also matter as well and that is where the mystery is at. When a system rewards dependence over independence, or maintenance over solutions, that is where we start to see a bit of corruption at play. Are we paying for someone to end our problems, or are we paying someone to make sure those problems never truly go away.? That is what we will explore in this episode: when does business stop being about solving misery and start becoming a business built on misery?
