Ep 06: Before You Go Forward Look Back The First Step Examining Your Family of Origin

21m | Oct 6, 2026

In this episode of the Biblical Film Room, Michael Jerome explains why examining your family of origin can be an important first step toward spiritual growth, emotional healing, healthier relationships, and lasting transformation. This is not about blaming your parents, living in the past, excusing present choices, or diagnosing your family. It is about understanding the beliefs and relational patterns that were formed before you had the language to recognize them.

Michael explores how early experiences with caregivers can shape what we learn about belonging, love, safety, trust, authority, conflict, vulnerability, identity, affection, rejection, responsibility, and God. He also studies the family dynamics of Jacob and Esau in Genesis 25 through 33, using their story to illustrate how favoritism, competition, deception, resentment, and unmet needs can affect relationships across a lifetime.

In this episode, you will learn:

● Why a family of origin can influence how you relate, believe, and respond today.

● How early experiences may shape your understanding of love, belonging, conflict, safety, trust, and identity.

● Why family patterns may show up later as people-pleasing, conflict avoidance, emotional shutdown, perfectionism, control, difficulty with boundaries, or a need for validation.

● What Jacob and Esau’s story reveals about family favoritism and relational wounds.

● Why your family of origin may explain patterns without determining your future.

● How grace affirms that your identity is received from God, not achieved through performance.

● How to create a simple family of origin inventory.

● Reflection prompts that can help you notice, without rushing to judge or fix, what you learned in your first home.

● Why awareness is a foundation for change and transformation through Scripture.

Your past may help explain some of your patterns, but it does not have the final word over your identity or future. You can look backward without getting stuck there, distinguish learned beliefs from God’s truth, and begin moving forward in freedom through Christ.

Family of Origin Inventory

Set aside quiet time and reflect on these questions:

● In my home, love felt like…

● To belong, I learned I had to…

● When someone was angry, what happened?

● When I was sad, what happened?

● When I failed, what was the outcome?

● Conflict was handled by…

● Asking for help meant…

● I learned that God was…

Do not try to solve everything at once. Start by noticing what comes to mind and consider what those early lessons may still be shaping today.
