- Elevating God Above the Bible - Dogmatically Imperfect S1-022
There is a core dysfunction that the church has been stumbling through for generations. We have this idea that a theologian is one who studies the Bible. This is a gross misunderstanding. Theology is the study of God. The Bible is a book that contains the writings of ancient theologians. Bibliology is the study of theologies contained in the Bible. Just like theologians of today, the theologians from the biblical record have very different ideas. 2 small examples; From the Old Testament we see these competing ideas, God requires a sacrifice vs obedience is better than sacrifice. In the New Testament we have the age old debate of Grace vs Works. These are different theologies from different theologians in a collection of writings from thousands of years ago.
We must learn how to elevate God above the scriptures. This session describes part of the reason why.

When a scripture describes God in a way that is contrary to the example of Jesus, this is a false characterization. Fake news. It should be redacted. Just like the early church did with circumcision. Redact it. But how do we know this needs to take place? And how do we decide where to draw the line? Find out in today’s episode.

There is a pattern we should follow in the biblical record. Saul of Tarsus found out he was realllllly wrong. Later, the Apostle Paul backslid and then changed his position radically. The pattern is in recognizing how to allow the Living Word to displace the written word.
This episode points out some of the areas they found they were wrong, and what they did about it.

Jesus fulfilled what was written, but why did he finish with the ultimate turn of the other cheek? Jesus already had the ability to forgive sin. So why fulfill this last prophecy? This episode takes a close look at these questions.

Christ is not the center of traditional Christianity. The center of our faith that everything else revolves around is Hell. All of our efforts are tailored to avoid Hell or try to help others avoid Hell. Is this something that carried over from the Old Covenant or is it unique to the New Covenant? Maybe it isn’t part of either…today’s episode tackles this controversial topic.

Each section of Christianity emphasizes a different part of the scripture. This causes conflict. Do we think that God is the author of such conflict? At what point to we embrace Wisdom and realize that as our knowledge of the cosmos increases, our understanding of the complexity of God also increases and we must come to the conclusion that ancient theologians knew less about God than we do. Yet we insist on remaining stuck in their limited understanding. So what exactly is the language that God speaks?
Embrace Wisdom and find out what the actual universal language of God is in this episode.

The record of the Early Church was the shedding of the old traditions in light of the new covenant. The early church had to come to grips with dismissing the written word in favor of the Living Word.
Rather than fully embracing the example of favoring the Living Word, The Modern Church has decided to cling to the new written word, when there are clear differences between the limited understanding of New Testament writers and the example of Christ in the earth.
This episode illustrates one such account.

The migration of Paul’s theology is often framed as “from Saul to Paul” but we find out that there is a dramatic migration in Paul’s theology even after his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. This episode explores the way that the early church disregarded the authority of the written word in favor of the Living Word and this is the pattern that the modern church follow.
