- Why Can’t I Lose Weight: Ultra-Processed Foods
Welcome everybody and thanks for joining us on episode #75 of “Health Talk with Dr. Kell”.
Today we’re discussing the topic: “Why Can’t I Lose Weight: Ultra-Processed Foods”.
Ultra-Processed Foods are often marketed as “healthy”, “natural” and “organic”. These words may describe the original ingredients, but they don’t refer to the process of how the food was made. These foods go through multiple processes and contain many added ingredients. They’re highly manipulated. Some examples of ultra-processed foods are soft drinks, chips, chocolate, candy, ice-cream, sweetened breakfast cereals, packaged soups, chicken nuggets, hot-dogs, and fries.
Diets high in these foods may set off the immune system, causing inflammation, gut permeability, and a bacterial imbalance in the gut. These can negatively affect your immune system, and cause weight gain.
Eating ultra-processed foods, such as industrial oils and synthetic preservatives, make them softer and easier to chew and swallow, which may lead to eating a larger quantity of food at a quicker rate. This, in turn, leads to a higher caloric.

Welcome everybody and thanks for joining us on episode #74 of “Health Talk with Dr. Kell”.
Today we’re discussing the topic: “Why Can’t I Lose Weight: Cortisol – the weight loss devil”.
Cortisol is the primary stress hormone and it’s made in the adrenal glands. It’s elevated when we experience heightened anxiety or stress, and it’s lowered when we’re in a relaxed state.
When cortisol levels rise, all of the body’s energy goes into handling the stressors instead of focusing on digestion, the immune system, or other regulatory functions.
Cortisol stimulates carbohydrate and fat metabolism for quick energy. It prompts insulin release and maintenance of blood sugar levels. This can cause an increase in appetite and cravings for sweet, high-fat, and salty foods.
Today, we’re discussing healthy ways to lower your cortisol levels.

Mindless eating occurs when the brain is distracted, and a person becomes unaware of what and how much he or she is eating. It can lead to excessive calorie consumption and weight gain.
One way to tackle this is to track what you’re eating. Consuming whole foods and eating plenty of protein while adding in exercise, can be helpful.

Thanks for joining us on episode #66 of “Health Talk with Dr. Kell”.
Today we’re beginning (Part 1) a series that dives into the question: “Why can’t I lose weight?”
Weight can be an all-consuming topic. You might wake up and think about it, and then before going to bed at night, look down and see your full belly, and promise yourself to be “good” tomorrow.
On the most basic level, calories in should be equal to calories used, in order to maintain your weight. We’ve all heard this. So, what is it that ‘s preventing us from following through?
The weight loss industry is big business. I’ve been desperate before and bought into what they were selling. I’d lose weight and then I’d put it back on. The ups and the downs of the numbers on the scale controlled how I felt about myself. I was looking for a distraction from the emotional pain that life brings. Food was a way to numb it. Like any addiction, sugar became my friend.

Welcome everybody and thanks for joining us on episode #58 of “Health Talk with Dr. Kell.
Today we’re bringing one of our favorite guests back on the show, Ted Hahn, to discuss “Synthetic verses Whole Food Supplements.”
Dr. Kell interviewed Ted back in Podcast #17, where they discussed “Inflammation and the Autoimmune Response.” Ted is a clinical nutritionist who found his passion in helping doctors and their practices understand how to implement nutrition to improve the health of their patients.
As a Clinical Nutritionist, his favorite, simple rule is “If it doesn’t have fins, feathers, fur, or grow out of the Earth, don’t eat it.” We’re learning that this same rule applies for supplements.
Today on the show, we discuss strength (mg/amount) verses potency (how strong/how well it works), and why the body utilizes whole food better than synthetic.
You might be thinking you’re taking a large dose of Vitamin C, but how much of that is your body able to use? Are you using a daily collagen supplement? We discuss what collagen is and how the body makes it. Are you on blood thinners? You might find our discussion noteworthy.
Sit back and enjoy…
