• Suffering in silence: the male victims of domestic abuse

The recent defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard highlighted to the world how men can fall victim to domestic abuse.

Even so, male victims still struggle with the stigma, still struggle to see themselves as a victim and still struggle to get appropriate help.

In this episode we look at the challenges facing male victims and try and understand why society still doesn't easily accept that women can be perpetrators of violence. We also explore why the UK government are only able to help male victims within it's 'violence against women and girls' strategy.

We also hear from Richard; a victim of domestic abuse to hear first hand what he experienced and how he struggled to get the help he needed.

  • Falsely Accused - Part II

Part 1 is available in your favourite podcast player.

There's a knock at the door. It's the Police. Someone has accused you of rape. What do you do?

It's a nightmare situation faced by an unknown number of men. As #MeToo and #BelieveWomen have spread across the globe, what happens when an accusation is false? What are the repercussions of someone facing that allegation?

Across two episodes we're looking at the effect of being falsely accused.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have recently given us a front row seat to how complex a trial can be when crimes happen behind closed doors. When it's a case of 'he said / she said' who should you believe?

Over the two episode we'll hear from Liam who spent two years being investigated for 12 counts of rape and sexual assault along with legal experts who tell us what the risks and consequences of prosecutors being guided by societies demands.

Experts featured in this episode include:

    • Dr Ros Burnett is a Research Associate, formerly Reader in Criminology, at the Centre for Criminology, University of Oxford.
    • Dr Dennis Eady is a lecturer at Cardiff University and leads their innocence project which encourages law students to investigate and examine potential cases of wrongful conviction or miscarriages of justice.
    • Matthew Scott is a barrister who specialises in criminal law, including appeals, wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice.

In this episode of The Problem With Men Podcast, we’re looking at divorce. While we’re often captivated by gossip around celebrity break ups (see Kim Kardashian's divorce for example) there is a common theme where women are seen as getting a fresh start and new lease on life

Divorced men on the other hand are considered bitter and miserable. Is this really the case? Does divorce affect men and women differently? How does a man deal with divorce? And how does it affect a mans health?

We speak to Anthropologist Craig Eric Morris, Divorce Solicitor Vanessa Lloyd Platt, licenced therapist Gary Brown and Professor John Oliffe the founder and lead investigator of the University of British Columbia’s Men’s Health Research program.
