Wise Scientists 8: Federico Faggin
28m | Apr 4, 2026Philosopher-physicist Ravi Ravindra notes that according to all the sages, there are many levels of reality subtler than the mind. So, any enterprise wholly driven by the mind—including science, philosophy, and theology—cannot connect with these subtler levels of reality. In order to relate with these subtle levels one needs to rely on direct perception, not on thought. Hence, the need to open up and enhance the quality of perception and being among scientists. Then they are more likely to attain knowledge which is closer to wisdom. A wise scientist is interested in truth - which is a subtle combination of knowledge and compassion.
In this Wise Scientists podcast series, Ravi engages in dialogue with leading scientists about the need for more wisdom in society in general, and specifically among scientists due to its cultural power and influence as well as the speed of current technological developments, for instance in AI.
In this episode he talks with Federico Faggin who has led what he calls four lives: as a physicist, engineer and inventor, entrepreneur, and author. He designed the world's first microprocessor at Intel and founded and led Zilog, Synaptics, and other high-tech companies. Federico has received many prizes and awards in the United States, Europe, and Japan. These include the Marconi Prize (1988), the Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology (1997), and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation (2009), from President Barack Obama. In 1996, Faggin was inducted in the National Inventor's Hall of Fame. He has also received many honorary degrees in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. Federico is currently president of the Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the scientific study of consciousness, an interest that has become a passionate full-time activity. In 2019, Federico published his autobiography SILICON, through Mondadori, Italy’s premier book publisher, where it has been a bestseller.
