S03 E43: The Organization Man: Belonging, Conformity, and the Death of Individualism
Season 3 | Episode 43
45m | Oct 26, 2026The old American dream was individual: work hard, strike out on your own, succeed or fail by your own efforts. The new American dream is collective: belong to the organization, conform to its culture, find meaning in your position within the group.
In this episode, we explore William Whyte’s study of the postwar corporate culture that replaced entrepreneurial individualism with organizational belonging. The organization man doesn’t rebel. He adjusts. He takes personality tests that reward blandness and punish originality.
Written in 1956, it described the grey flannel conformity of the Eisenhower era. But the critique applies to any system that values fitting in over standing out.
