S02 E29: The Circle: Transparency, Connection, and the New Totalitarianism

Season 2 | Episode 29
41m | Jul 14, 2026

What if surveillance wasn't imposed on you? What if you demanded it? What if total transparency felt like freedom?

In this episode, we explore Eggers' novel about a young woman who joins a tech company that combines the worst aspects of Google, Facebook, and a cult. The Circle's motto: "Secrets are lies. Sharing is caring. Privacy is theft."

The horror of The Circle isn't that the company is evil. It's that the company is helpful. Every privacy violation comes with convenience. Every intrusion is framed as connection.

Eggers wrote it in 2013. It was supposed to be satire.
