  • Ep 059 | Rebuilding Ruins

What would your life look like, if you knew without a doubt that God would rebuild the ruins of your life?

Would your life be any different?

Josh, and Drew are joined by John Gallagher of the Black Sheep Recovery Warfare Podcast to talk about just that on this episode of Unashamed Recovery.

This episode topic is centered from ACTS 15:16. In the context of that scripture we see prophecy about rebuilding the temple from the ruins.

Let's look at this scripture through the lense of recovery, especially in the aspect of our past.

The ruins may be our past, but the rebuilding happens in the present, surrounded by those who uplift us.

And as we talk about rebuilding, it's essential to address the potential setbacks and challenges. Have you faced obstacles in your recovery journey, and how did faith contribute to overcoming them?

There have been moments where it felt like the ruins were too extensive. But that's where faith steps in – it's the anchor that holds us steady. Believing in the promise of rebuilding, even in the face of setbacks, fuels the resilience needed for recovery.

"What if today I believed that God will rebuild from the ruins?"

  • Ep 054 | Voice of Hope

It's that dreaded time of year again, it's another Season Finale of Unashamed Recovery. As we say goodbye to Season 4, we are going out with a bang! The guys sit down with the director of Voice of Hope Men's Recovery Program, Jon Layton.

Jon's story starts off like a lot of our stories, with a lack of accountability. From a lie from the enemy planted early in life, Jon finished high school already wrapped in the chains of addiction. Those chains only got tighter as the years went, as nearly 2 decades passed by. Living as a functioning addict, Jon lived in denial for years in the blur of his disease.

It wasn't until 25 years later that rock bottom would finally find Jon in the darkness of the pit that he had dug himself in. Jon finally heard the voice of hope that called him out of that darkness and has been living the sober life ever since.

  • Ep 052 | Non-Seasonal Gratitude

Gratitude and November go hand in hand like Thanksgiving and Turkey.

For the Recovering Addict and the Christian living life attached to the vine, gratitude must be more than just 30 days a year.

Josh, Palmer, and Drew dive deep into the theme of gratitude in recovery in this episode of Unashamed Recovery. The trio explores the biblical perspective on gratitude and its significance in the recovery journey.

    Episode Highlights:

    Gratitude Verse:

    • The episode begins with the hosts discussing the chosen verse for the day: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." The hosts reflect on the importance of incorporating gratitude into daily life.

    Gratitude Beyond November:

    • With Thanksgiving around the corner, the hosts emphasize that gratitude should extend beyond a seasonal practice. They highlight its relevance for everyone, not just those in recovery.

    Defining Gratitude:

    • Palmer defines gratitude as joy, distinguishing it from happiness. Gratitude, rooted in God, goes beyond situational feelings, reminding individuals of the depth of joy that comes from within.

    Gratitude in Challenging Seasons:

    • Palmer and Drew reflect on the timing of the Thanksgiving season and Christmas, emphasizing the importance of being thankful even in challenging and expensive times. Gratitude serves as a powerful perspective shifter during difficult seasons.

The Role of Gratitude in Personal Recovery:

    • Josh shares how gratitude helps him remember where he came from in his recovery journey. He expresses the fear of forgetting the transformative moments and emphasizes the role of gratitude in keeping those memories alive.

    Why Gratitude in Recovery:

    • SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE

    Positive Emotions Through Gratitude

  • Ep 051 | From the Pit to Glory

After much delay to technical difficulties beyond our control, we finally present our latest testimony episode with guest Jonathan Clark as he tells of his inspiring story of overcoming the pit.

This testimony is powerful because it can be the story of anyone and it showcases the power of the grace that is second chances. Jonathan's story isn't crazy, filled with drama, nor is it far fetched. It's a story that we see all the time. It's a story of someone looking else where to help cover the hurt. What is remarkable about this story is the resilience of trying one more time. It is there in that aspect that the miracle is born, when we go from the pit to glory.

  • Ep 050 | Counterfeit : Weighing the Truth

Originally Ep 050 was suppose to be "from the pit to glory" with Jonathan Clark sharing his story, but since we are still having computer issues and cannot release that episode, check out this spare episode that has been sitting in the Unashamed Recovery vault.

On this episode, the guys sit down with Amber Thomison of Strong Towers Recovery once again but this time to talk on how we can weigh the truth.

In early recovery, it's easy for us to fall victim to all the lies that are coming at us from every direction. How can we avoid these pitfalls and steer clear of the lies that are dressed up as "almost truths" or counterfeits of the real truth?

We have to weigh everything against scripture.

But how do we do that?

Well good question, and that's exactly what Amber is walking us through on this episode. As someone who was a non-believer most of her life, Amber's walk with Christ didn't start until her recovery journey when she found the truth.

Get out your bibles, get out a notebook and a pen and dig in with us on this episode as we explore how we can weigh the counterfeits against the truth.

  • Ep 049 | Unsalvageable : From Chaos to Hope

On this episode, the guys are joined by Amber Thomison of Strong Towers Recovery in Philadelphia, MS.

There is not many episodes that leave Josh, Drew and Palmer speechless, teary eyed, and in awe but this testimony definitely checked the boxes on all three.

In this episode, Amber's amazing story starts immediately in the worse case scenario, in the trenches of chaos and hopelessness. With the cards stacked against her immediately from birth, life dealt some hard hits all through Amber's childhood and teenage years through early adulthood. It wasn't until at rock bottom with a plan to overdose, that she would finally encounter a grace that would change her life forever. Grab the tissues and make sure you got a full charge cause you don't want to miss how this one ends! We can honestly say that this is a story of hope and a leading example of how we recover even when our addiction has us thinking we are unsalvageable!

  • Ep 047 | Code Red : The Truth About Anger

Are you working a honest recovery program?

If so, it’s safe to say that your sobriety from the self destructive behavior that brought you into recovery has been hard earned. Working a honest recovery is not only mandatory for successful sobriety but also very demanding. An honest recovery forces us to be continually self examining ourselves through a magnifying glass searching for any areas denial could be hiding. One such area that sneaks its way into many people's recovery is anger.

For most of us, after years of successful recovery from what brought us through the door, we find ourselves struggling with anger that has somehow slipped in undetected. At first it seems normal because everyone struggles with anger. But soon after we find it to be a crutch for us to heavily lean upon when we can no longer lean on our old habit that we are sober from.

If this all sounds too familiar and you are struggling with anger in your sober and recovery journey, pull up a chair as Josh, Drew, & Palmer sit down and get uncomfortably honest about Anger and our response to it in our recovery, in our marriages, in our parenting and every other aspect of our lives.

The guys break down anger and look at it from different verses in the Bible to answer those common questions :

    Is anger biblical?

Should we completely ignore anger or is it a healthy emotion that we need to control?

Does anger harm the health of our recovery resulting in poor sobriety?

    And much, much more.

If you're struggling with Anger, just know your not alone and there is hope in overcoming it.

  • Ep 044 | Count It All Joy

Recovery is a delicate balance. The balance of good and bad. We want to focus on the good but also remember the bad. We can't focus on just one thing and neglect it's opposite. Likewise, we must celebrate the ups but don’t forget to also embrace the downs of your recovery journey. Even the bad days still have lessons to offer us.

Join us on this episode of Unashamed Recovery as Josh, Drew, and Palmer sit down and talk about the importances of why having Joy that is rooted in Christ as the cornerstone of our recovery process and not shallow happiness. The guys break down what is biblical joy and why it is not the same as happiness which is purely circumstantial.

Mountain top experiences are built in the trials of the valley and it is there that we learn to count it all joy!

In todays episode we are looking at James 1:2-4 :

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

  • Ep 041 | Through the Veil : Unmasking the Blindspots

Have you ever found yourself needing to change lanes on a 4 lane highway and you look around and check your mirrors and you don't see another vehicle around so you go ahead and start drifting over only to be confronted with the surprise honk of another vehicle coming up on your side? That vehicle had been there the whole time, hiding in your blind spot.

Those of us in recovery can get blind spots too, and it's just as dangerous as crossing over onto another vehicle on a highway. Because for us, blind spots in our recovery usually means we are heading for a relapse.

Today, we're diving deep into the blind spots in recovery, guided by the wisdom and teachings found in the Scriptures. We all have blind spots—those areas of our lives that we're unaware of or struggle to see clearly. In the context of recovery, blind spots can be significant obstacles on our journey to wholeness. Just as Blind spots are often hidden from our own view, and it takes divine revelation and self-reflection to recognize and address them. So buckle up, put on your blinker as we go through the veil : unmasking blind spots on the recovery journey.

This episodes main scripture of focus comes from :

    • Psalm 19:12 reminds us, "Who can discern their own errors?

and other scripture used in the episode :

•Proverbs 28:26: "Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe."

•1 Corinthians 13:12 : "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."

•Proverbs 11:2 : "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom."

•Proverbs 27:17 : "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

•Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: "Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up."

•Psalm 139:23-24 : "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

•Galatians 6:2 : "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

•Isaiah 41:10 : "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

•Romans 12:12: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."

other verses that can help or be applied to the process :

•2 Corinthians 12:9 : "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'"

**Remember that these verses provide guidance and encouragement, but personal transformation also requires prayer, reliance on God's strength, and seeking support from a community**
