Resumed 5th Sunday After Epiphany Reflection: Wheat Among the Weeds

5m | Nov 3, 2026

Weeds appear in every field, and Jesus tells us the Master does not rush to pull them up. This reflection on the parable of the wheat and the cockle looks at God’s patience with a mixed field, in the Church, in our families, and in our own hearts. St. John Chrysostom reminds us that the weeds beside us may yet become wheat, and St. Augustine urges the good to make sure the harvest finds them wheat. With St. Paul’s call to compassion, patience, and forgiveness, and the Mass’s prayer to direct our wobbly hearts, we are invited to forgive freely and ask Jesus to make us wheat.
