- S5: EP 29 How to take proactive measures to prevent leaky gut and support well-being in menopause
Maintaining good health is vital, and it all starts with the gut. A balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can help connect your mind and body to provide vibrant energy and keep you feeling your best.
When your gut is leaky, it increases inflammation and impairs your body's ability to absorb nutrients, leading to hormonal imbalances that exacerbate menopause symptoms.
In this week's podcast, I am joined by Prajakta Apte, a Registered Dietitian and Registered Yoga teacher specializing in functional nutrition and gut health. She is certified in Ayurveda and incorporates Ayurvedic practices into her nutrition consulting business.
Prajakta works closely with individuals struggling with digestive issues, helping them reconnect with their gut through the healing power of nutrition and lifestyle modifications. She believes in treating the root cause of her clients' problems rather than masking their symptoms.
During the conversation, you will learn what leaky gut is and how it affects the gastrointestinal system. This understanding will help you recognize potential signs and symptoms in yourself or others.
You will also gain insight into various factors that contribute to leaky gut, empowering you to make informed lifestyle choices to support gut health. Additionally, you will become familiar with the common symptoms of leaky gut, including digestive issues, food sensitivities, and possible connections to autoimmune conditions. This information can help you identify potential gut health concerns.

My guest this week is Dr. Krista Coombs, a Chinese medicine practitioner for over 20 years, and in the last decade, she has integrated functional medicine into her practice. This has enhanced her ability to help patients, allowing them to regain their health and thrive, even in the face of debilitating diagnoses.
Having experienced managing a complex autoimmune condition, Hashimotoās Thyroiditis, she realized the importance of prioritizing the fundamentals of health. It is crucial to master these fundamentals before or at least while delving deeper for answers through advanced testing, supplements, and medications.
After realizing the importance of establishing the foundations for healing in a low-cost and empowered way, Dr. K developed an online group program called "The EASY Way with Dr. K". This program teaches individuals how to reset their stubborn metabolism, manage weight appropriately, and improve the functioning of the body's many interrelated systems. The program is based on a 4 EASY Foundational Pillar approach to increase health span.
Specifically:
- Krista's personal journey with Hashimotoās and how did that influence her to become an integrative health practitioner, combining Chinese medicine and Functional medicine?
- And what is happening in Functional medicine today that is changing the practice of medicine?
- What do you believe people need in order to manage autoimmune conditions, especially as they enter perimenopause more easily?
- Her best advice for achieving and keeping better health, even when living with an autoimmune condition like Hashimotoās thyroiditis or other chronic inflammatory conditions?
- Krista's biggest lessons learned from her experience, so far, living with Hashimotoās through peri-menopause and are now in the early years of post-menopause?
- If she had a magic wand and could revisit her younger self, what health advice would she want to share with her?

How can self-compassion helps us cope with menopause, life changes and learning to thrive rather than just survive?
Perimenopause and menopause are natural transitions but bring about changes in our bodies that sometimes conflict with society's view of how we should look. Symptoms like anxiety, low libido, brain fog and mood swings can lead us to be critical and even hateful towards ourselves. Especially if they create issues at work or in our closest relationships.
Often there is a lack of compassionate emotional and physical support for women and people experiencing this transition from the medical community and culture at large.
Join Clarissa today for her conversation with Dr Nicola Harper, doctor, coach and teacher of Self-compassion. She loves helping amazing women to thrive and she regularly speaks about Compassionate Leadership.
In this conversation, we discuss why:
Self-Compassion is a skill set, not an emotion.
How you can train your inner critical voice to be an honest, supportive best friend, instead of dragging you down.
Learning to manage yourself and your energy as a valuable resource, will transform your experience of life.
