  • S5: EP 29 How to take proactive measures to prevent leaky gut and support well-being in menopause

Maintaining good health is vital, and it all starts with the gut. A balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can help connect your mind and body to provide vibrant energy and keep you feeling your best.

When your gut is leaky, it increases inflammation and impairs your body's ability to absorb nutrients, leading to hormonal imbalances that exacerbate menopause symptoms.

In this week's podcast, I am joined by Prajakta Apte, a Registered Dietitian and Registered Yoga teacher specializing in functional nutrition and gut health. She is certified in Ayurveda and incorporates Ayurvedic practices into her nutrition consulting business.

Prajakta works closely with individuals struggling with digestive issues, helping them reconnect with their gut through the healing power of nutrition and lifestyle modifications. She believes in treating the root cause of her clients' problems rather than masking their symptoms.

During the conversation, you will learn what leaky gut is and how it affects the gastrointestinal system. This understanding will help you recognize potential signs and symptoms in yourself or others.

You will also gain insight into various factors that contribute to leaky gut, empowering you to make informed lifestyle choices to support gut health. Additionally, you will become familiar with the common symptoms of leaky gut, including digestive issues, food sensitivities, and possible connections to autoimmune conditions. This information can help you identify potential gut health concerns.

  • S5: EP 28 The EASY Way to Live Well with Autoimmunity into Post-Menopause

My guest this week is Dr. Krista Coombs, a Chinese medicine practitioner for over 20 years, and in the last decade, she has integrated functional medicine into her practice. This has enhanced her ability to help patients, allowing them to regain their health and thrive, even in the face of debilitating diagnoses.

Having experienced managing a complex autoimmune condition, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, she realized the importance of prioritizing the fundamentals of health. It is crucial to master these fundamentals before or at least while delving deeper for answers through advanced testing, supplements, and medications.

After realizing the importance of establishing the foundations for healing in a low-cost and empowered way, Dr. K developed an online group program called "The EASY Way with Dr. K". This program teaches individuals how to reset their stubborn metabolism, manage weight appropriately, and improve the functioning of the body's many interrelated systems. The program is based on a 4 EASY Foundational Pillar approach to increase health span.

    Specifically:

    • Krista's personal journey with Hashimoto’s and how did that influence her to become an integrative health practitioner, combining Chinese medicine and Functional medicine?
    • And what is happening in Functional medicine today that is changing the practice of medicine?
    • What do you believe people need in order to manage autoimmune conditions, especially as they enter perimenopause more easily?
    • Her best advice for achieving and keeping better health, even when living with an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or other chronic inflammatory conditions?
    • Krista's biggest lessons learned from her experience, so far, living with Hashimoto’s through peri-menopause and are now in the early years of post-menopause?
    • If she had a magic wand and could revisit her younger self, what health advice would she want to share with her?

  • SE5: EP 24 Championing #Menopositivity

Menopause businesses are booming and amongst the top companies is  Womaness, a female-founded, high-performance collection of modern menopause products created by women for women that offer solutions from head to toe (and everything in between).

Founded by Sally Mueller and Michelle Jacobs who believe women deserve modern, innovative products, essential information, and unlimited inspiration that help take the “pause” out of menopause. Their mission is to help women tap into their fierceness, sexiness, realness and agelessness.

Not only are they providing women with essentials but they are also paving the way for women in business, catching the eyes of VCs, despite the stigma of only 2% of female-founded companies receiving funding, and building Womaness up to be something bigger than they could have imagined.

Sally Mueller joined me to talk about

    • The importance of being educated about what's changing with our bodies and how to go about finding the right doctor; and the importance of being connected to a community.
    • What made Sally and Michelle start Womaness and how they are different from other products and brands in the market?
    • What has been the biggest shock to you now that they've been in the market for over two years?
    • We discuss Womaness's top products and how they're formulated to address the major symptoms of menopause.
    • What's next for Womaness?

  • SE5: EP 23 Self-Compassion and Menopause

How can self-compassion helps us cope with menopause, life changes and learning to thrive rather than just survive?

Perimenopause and menopause are natural transitions but bring about changes in our bodies that sometimes conflict with society's view of how we should look. Symptoms like anxiety, low libido, brain fog and mood swings can lead us to be critical and even hateful towards ourselves. Especially if they create issues at work or in our closest relationships.

Often there is a lack of compassionate emotional and physical support for women and people experiencing this transition from the medical community and culture at large.

Join Clarissa today for her conversation with Dr Nicola Harper, doctor, coach and teacher of Self-compassion. She loves helping amazing women to thrive and she regularly speaks about Compassionate Leadership.

In this conversation, we discuss why:

Self-Compassion is a skill set, not an emotion.

How you can train your inner critical voice to be an honest, supportive best friend, instead of dragging you down.

Learning to manage yourself and your energy as a valuable resource, will transform your experience of life.

Recent evidence-based research shows that one of the principal regulators of health and hormones is the Gut Microbiome. The impact of the gut microbiota on health has become a rapidly growing and exciting area of research which clearly shows that therapeutic interventions, food and lifestyle, can positively modulate its composition and alleviate menopausal symptoms and associated symptoms of inability to reach and maintain a healthy weight, digestive disorders, fatigue, metabolic syndrome, thyroid issues and mood fluctuations.

Natalie wants to let women know that through simple daily changes to their food (not dieting – in fact the opposite) and lifestyle changes (which the busiest woman can implement) they CAN change the trajectory of their health and transform their lives.

    We talked about the following:

    1. What is my Gut Microbiome and what role does it play in my health?
    2. What foods diminish my Microbiome? What foods enhance my Microbiome?
    3. What Lifestyle elements diminish my Microbiome? What Lifestyle elements enhance my Microbiome?

  • SE5:EP12 The Alchemy of Menopause

This week my guest is Cathy Skipper an international teacher, plant person and healer who brings 30 years of teaching, healing, and plant experience, her highly-attuned intuition, and her mastery at ‘seeing the person within’ to all her work.

To become a wiser elder, a crone there is a journey we must undertake from peri-menopause to empowered leadership. And how using the Alchemical stages as outlined in Cathy's book The Alchemy of Menopause provides a framework for this journey.

In our conversation, we talk about

    • Why connecting with the feminine power is key in menopause
    • How that connection supports us in finding a whole new chapter of life t
    • The importance of finding your true voice and its link to a deep connection with our maternal bloodline and ancestral voices.
    • Why we need to shift the focus from needing to do to a period of guided inner work that helps you to trust your intuition
    • The role of the Crone in the future of humanity

  • SE5: EP11 Pelvic Floor Problems in Menopause are Common Not Normal and Can Be Solved

Pelvic conditions are common but NOT normal!

Conditions of urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence and painful sex that commonly occur through menopause are very treatable and should not be ignored. People should not "live with these issues'.

Kegels /pelvic floor contractions need to be prescribed and taught to an individual so that it fits their needs.

This week my guest is Ingrid Harm Ernandes. She has been a physical therapist specializing in Women’s Health for over 26 years. She was the Co-Director and a mentor for the Duke Women’s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program She is board certified in Women’s Health (WCS) and Pelvic Floor Biofeedback. In 2021 she published her book, “The Musculoskeletal Mystery: How to solve your pelvic floor symptoms”.

    In our conversation we discuss:

    1. What prompted Ingrid to write the book?
    2. How are the muscles involved in many of the pelvic floor conditions seen during menopause?
    3. What happens during a pelvic exam and pelvic physical therapy?
    4. What can people do to help themselves?

    and more..
