Cutting a plug/hydrant isn't necessarily a difficult task on the fire ground... when you know the key steps to take, potential issues that can arise, and how to mitigate those issues.

One area that I've somewhat deviated from our 'traditional practice' here in Dallas is on what the signal (or call) should be to start laying in our 5" supply hose. Once we step off the apparatus and wrap the hydrant, do we use hand signals? Do we radio to the driver to start laying in? My preference is a little different, but something I think is worth your consideration and maybe a conversation at your kitchen table.

Recently I've taught a couple hydraulics classes where I think some confusion has crept up because I wasn't as clear as I could have been that our water supply tactics exist on a spectrum. Providing a bit of context to some comments in the January Urban Pump Series where I said that, "the volume capacity of 3" hose dictates some of my fire ground tactics."

It’s important to understand that this is rarely applied and only a viable option in certain circumstances.

In our context, we usually have a permanent water supply secured by the time a handline would be making entry.

The point is to know your equipment and what it’s limits are. Confidence is built on competence. Never rely on reckless aggressive tactics.
