  • #160: Tanner Shuck - Real & Raw Fitness Tips to Get Jacked & Be Happy

Tanner Shuck (@tanner_shuck) is a coach, athlete, and one of the most real voices within the fitness industry. His direct approach to fitness and nutrition cuts through so much nonsense and delivers amazing results with a refreshingly simple and effective perspective.

Tanner was a previous guest of the podcast back in episode 42 so it was time to run it back. Since that time Tanner has had massive growth on social media and is more deserving of it than anyone. His YouTube channel has some of the best fitness content I’ve seen.

The message is always the same: train hard, get better at the basics, eat real foods, and be relentlessly consistent. This episode is full of tiny nuggets of extremely tactical advice on exactly how to do just that.

It’s tough to stay away from the glitz and glam online - especially in a world full of enhanced people via PEDs and/or photoshop. So we need to bring things back to reality to set expectations right, without any fluff. Tanner is one of the best at that.

This episode also took a turn touching on some mental health aspects which are always intertwined with everything we do. I didn’t expect this but I’m glad it happened. It’s important to discuss, bring to the forefront, and share about what works and what doesn’t.

As always, take the messages, and apply them to your own life.

  • #159: Sachin Latti - Running Across Canada… In Record Time

Sachin Latti (@sach.in.motion) is an endurance athlete advocating for those suffering in silence. Coming from a background in law enforcement, and having competed and excelled in bodybuilding and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, running is his next challenge - and his vehicle to give back and help others.

I hear about people who do crazy things like run across Canada and think it’s awesome… Sach says “Game on”. That sounds like hyperbole, but he is training to beat the record for the fastest run across Canada in 2025.

It’s not just the physical feat though, it’s everything it represents: resilience, consistency, grueling effort and dedication. But most of all, it’s who this is for: the veterans and first responders suffering in silence from PTSD and other mental health illnesses. Sach has been there himself, risen through it, and is now doing what he can to help everyone else.

Sach has an incredible story and a wonderful message. We spoke about some of the ins and outs of actually training for such an event, and all of the widespread impact it will have. As well as tons of actionable tips that you can use today to improve your own life situation, no matter where you currently are.

If you are in the Vancouver area, check out the Night to Inspire charity gala event on March 30th. Otherwise, follow Sach on IG, and check out his website to stay in the loop.

  • #157: Dr. Mani Kukreja - Simple Daily Exercises to Boost Longevity

Dr. Mani Kukreja (@dr_mani.kukreja) is an MD and MPH focused on integrative wellness and lifestyle medicine. She is passionate about educating people on anti-aging and is the author of the upcoming book “Live More, Age Less”.

Father Time is, and will always be, undefeated. But how can we maximize the time that we have? This is the concept of “healthspan”, and this is the main topic of this discussion. What’s the point of living longer if you’re not living well?

Anti-Aging and longevity are sort of buzzwords that are loosely thrown around these days and are often used to market nonsense products. Some of these things have value - and we discussed them - but none of them have any value if you’re not implementing certain daily exercises to form the foundation.

Dr. Kukreja is a wealth of knowledge and really breaks things down in a way that is easy to understand and simple to implement… but it only works if you implement it!

This was one of those conversations that could have easily been 5 hours long. Luckily, Sam is VERY good at being succinct, yet complete with the way he communicates fitness and nutrition advice. We covered a lot of ground in this episode.

Sam essentially outlines the roadmap to fat loss and fitness success. From before you even begin your transformation and the mindset to achieve your fat loss goals, all the way through to what you should be doing after you reach your goals - we covered it all.

  • #155: Dr. Carri Dominick - Pelvic Floor, Pregnancy & Postpartum Fitness Myths

Dr. Carri Dominick (@rechargetherapy) is a pelvic floor PT based out of Long Beach, California. Carri works to help people with any pelvic floor dysfunction live their best life.

This is brand new territory on the podcast. A huge and important topic nonetheless and I’m glad Carri was willing to come on and share with us. Unfortunately, for many topics surrounding pelvic floor health and anything related to pregnancy, there is a TON of misinformation out there.

Carri broke down a lot of the common myths out there and explained how things actually work. We spoke about the function of the pelvic floor, kegels and their place in therapy, exercise considerations before, during and after pregnancy, and many signs and symptoms to look out for in your own body.

Most importantly, Carri gives an amazing framework of how to think about these things for yourself. So that if you are in this situation, you are equipped to ask the right questions to the right people to best help yourself.

  • #154: Ronnie Duppert - Simple Workout Advice for Incredible Results

Ronnie Duppert (@coach_ron_duppert) is a personal trainer based in North Carolina. Ron trains real people for real life. And he gets them incredible results.

Training is very simple in nature - difficult to execute on consistently, but very simple. Ron breaks down his approach to training in a clear and concise way that is so easy to understand and implement immediately after listening to this episode.

We discussed how to organize your training and what the best splits to use are, and why you might choose one over another. We discussed how to choose exercises and adapt them to your current needs and interests. And a ton more simple, actionable and valuable training advice is found in this episode.

Quick note: unfortunately we had some minor tech issues while recording and there was a bit of a delay between us. I think we did as good a job as we could managing this but just a heads up.

Bryan Krahn (@bryankrahn) is a coach, writer, father, and is very humble & jacked. He’s been learning, teaching, coaching and training for a very long time and is one of the best in the industry.

In this episode we spoke a lot about the things you can be doing now to ensure long term success with your fitness. Whether you’re just starting out or already been training for several years, you want to learn from the people who have “been there, done that” - Bryan is that guy.

We touched on the topic of performance enhancing drugs as they are becoming ever-more-popular amongst men, and especially younger men. There’s a ton to unpack here, but it’s an important discussion to have and to understand.

  • #152: JMart - Training to Run a Marathon in 2024

In this episode I’m once again joined by my friend John Martirosyan aka JMart (@jmartfit) for a chat to recap our 2023 fitness pursuits, and look ahead to our 2024 goals.

At the beginning of last year we did a similar episode, and you can find that here

This year, John is planning to run a full marathon after successfully completed a half marathon last year without any injury.

I’ll be looking to re-up my goals from my last year now that I’m injury free. Staying injury free will be key, but the main goal is to get down to 9% body fat and be as strong as I can be for my wedding in a year’s time.

We went over what went well and what didn’t from last year, what we’ll change this year, and generally how to set and approach fitness goals going forward.

  • #151: The Science of Intermittent Fasting - Pros, Cons, & Recommendations

In this solo episode I discuss the hot (but not new) topic of intermittent fasting.

Nutrition trends come and go, and none of them are the be all end all answer. If they were, everyone would do it!

However, they all have some value and good things to them, along with the downsides. Mostly, they have a ton of overblown claims.

I went through the reality of the purported benefits, some of the pros and cons to using fasting as a nutrition protocol, and my recommendations on how you might implement it in your own life.

Peter Tzemis is an entrepreneur, writer, speaker, and also my cousin. We’ve done a few episodes in the past, and it’s become a yearly thing to do an end of year recap.

In this episode, we talk about a wide range of topics covering fitness and business and all the overlap between the two. Most notably, we spoke a lot about one thing Peter has implemented this year that’s given him the absolute greatest return: thinking time.

Like anything, easier said than done. However, massively powerful when it’s done.

  • #148: Steven Abbey - Real Foods are the Solution to Real Health - SOS Nutrients

Steven Abbey is the founder and CEO of SOS Nutrients, a forward-thinking health and wellness brand that is changing the industry with its research-based, natural product. Steven is on a mission to cure the nutritional crisis through whole foods.

It’s no secret that almost everyone is devoid of important nutrients to some degree, and that this contributes to our collective declining health. There are more ultra-processed, ultra-convenient, ultra-cheap options for food than ever - no wonder we are in this predicament.

Steven and I spoke about some of the ways in which real, whole foods can truly heal people. We also spoke a lot about the differences between real and synthetic supplements and why the SOS product checks all the boxes that one would want in a supplement.

This is an eye opening conversation around the impacts our everyday food has on our health, and some practical solutions to actually improve upon it.

  • #147: Anthony Pluff - Becoming a Morning Person & Creating a Healthy Relationship With Food

Anthony Pluff (@aplufftraining) is a personal trainer and father. His mission is to help dads lose weight and boost their energy so they can make more memories with their families. He is also the host of the Fatherhood Fitness Podcast and runs the free Fatherhood Fitness Facebook group for Dads.

Anthony became a morning person after becoming a father. He was notoriously a night owl prior to this, but quickly realized that it was best for himself and his family for him to be up early and productive early in the morning - including getting his workout in. This is a tough transition, but is necessary for so many people. We spoke a lot about different strategies to be able to alter your schedule to be the most optimal for your lifestyle.

He also has 3 young kids who all look up to him and learn from what he does. So in addition to being an amazing coach, he also has to set an example at home. This doesn’t mean only eating “healthy” foods and being militant at dinner time. It means helping his kids understand the difference between nutritious and less nutritious foods (or, sometimes foods as he calls them) and how all things can be included. Kids are like sponges, but the way we teach kids how to behave is honestly quite similar to the way we should teach ourselves as adults how to behave.

This episode is full of nuggets and one I hope you’ll listen back to and share with your friends. Be sure to follow Anthony on IG, listen to his podcast, and join his free Facebook group

  • #146: 8 Fitness Lessons from James Smith & Chris Williamson

James Smith and Chris Williamson are two fantastic people whom I very much look up to. I’ve learned an absolute ton from each of them and their content, and had the opportunity to meet them and see them live in Toronto.

I took away a ton of insightful lessons from them in business and life in general that I’ll apply to everything I’m doing. But staying true to this podcast, I’ve adapted these lessons to be relevant to your fitness and healthy goals.

Feel free to extrapolate them and apply them to your life broadly, but I did my best to make this as relevant and actionable to your fitness goals as I could. The last one should be absolutely no surprise at all if you’re a regular listener.

    The 8 lessons you’ll learn:

    1. The only thing that is doing the thing, is doing the thing.
    2. Close the loops.
    3. Insecurities are powerful.
    4. Align yourself with the costs of getting the thing you want.
    5. If the decision is easily reversible, do it.
    6. Discipline over motivation.
    7. Remove barriers as much as possible.
    8. Be consistent.

  • #145: Phil Dominguez - Mobility Training & Choosing the Best Exercises in the Gym

Phil Dominguez (@philly_2434) is a personal trainer based near Los Angeles, California. He has one of the best outdoor home gyms around, and is a phenomenal coach with a deep understanding of mobility training and how to progress clients from beginners to advanced safely and efficiently. Also, he’s an NFL shareholder.

I met Phil through mutual contacts online and then we finally met in person at a fitness conference in Edmonton. Phil has amazing energy and is definitely a person you want to be around. He brings all of this energy and passion to his coaching and it’s so obvious why he’s a great coach: he cares A LOT, and, he knows his stuff.

There’s a lot that goes into designing a good workout program, especially for people who come from a wide variety of athletic backgrounds with various levels of experience and injuries or health issues. You can’t just be memorizing exercises and making everyone do the same things in this scenario, and this is where Phil excels.

Most of this conversation was centered around how to improve your mobility, and how to choose exercises, or scale exercises up/down to suit your current needs, goals, and abilities. You’ll want your notepad close for this one!

To stay in touch with Phil and check out everything he’s up to (and see his wicked home gym), follow him on IG

  • #144: Dmitri Leonov - The Intersection of Technology & Wellness: Taopatch

Dmitri Leonov is a co-founder of Taopatch USA. Taopatch is a patented wearable nanotechnology device that combines acupuncture with light therapy. It is cutting edge technology combined with ancient healing wisdom, and it is changing people’s lives.

Listeners of the podcast will know that I am ALL for anything “ancient healing” or “traditional medicine”. Add in some cutting edge technology and I was sold the minute I heard about Taopatch. Now we’ve obviously got to be skeptical about these things and I’m the first to say that, but Dmitri and Taopatch did not disappoint.

This was a fascinating conversation about the product and the ways in which it works to make people feel better. From MS and Parkinson’s patients, to world-class athletes like Novak Djokovic. There is something for everyone in this conversation and many thoughts worth some deep consideration.

Taopatch is available worldwide. To learn more, visit the website taopatch.co

  • #143: Katie Bramlett - Shaping a New Approach to Fitness

Katie Bramlett is a co-founder of WeShape (@weshape.wellness). WeShape aims to offer an inclusive approach to fitness - focusing more on movement, intention, community, rest, and connection with self, as opposed to focusing on the number on the scale. Katie has been in the fitness industry for many years, and her own personal journey with fitness and with personal development led to the creation of WeShape.

Weight loss culture can be extremely difficult to navigate. There is more information and help available than ever, but there is also more noise than ever before. If we’ve learned anything, we can agree that there is no single approach that is best for everyone. How would we define “best” anyways?

WeShape's approach aims to shift the focus to how exercise and movement makes you feel. We discussed this transition and why it’s important. We discussed some of the negatives in fitness that WeShape is trying to move away from, but more importantly, the positives in which they are trying to shift towards.

Katie has graciously offered a 2 week free trial to listeners of the podcast. Head to weshape.com/danielyores to take advantage and give it a try!

  • #142: Do You Even Lift? (A Guide to Looking Like You Lift)

Looking like you lift is a very distinct look, that everyone knows, all around the world. It’s a look where nobody is surprised when you tell them you go to the gym. Not the look of a competitor or model, but the look of a strong person. While there’s no way to definitively measure this, I think it’s safe to say this is a goal for most people.

And yet, there are lots of people who are in the gym week in and week out, and don’t look like they lift.

*a note to the sensitive people of the internet: looking like you lift doesn’t make anyone a better or worse human than anyone else. Looking like you lift doesn’t necessarily mean you are healthy. Having this as a goal doesn’t make anyone good or bad.*

Anyways… In this episode I use this as a frame to really improve the way your body looks. Essentially, this is a guide to losing body fat and building muscle. Because in reality, that’s what “looking like you lift” means: being lean enough and having enough muscle.

Share this episode with your gym buddies, and hopefully it helps you finally look like you lift.
