Martha currently serves as the President of Citrus Crime Writers in Central Florida. She has been a member of SinC since 2017. Martha earned her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies, and before turning to the mystery life, served as dean of a business college in the Pennsylvania State University system.     Linda L. Richards is the award-winning author of 16 books. The founder and publisher of January Magazine and a contributing editor to the crime fiction blog The Rap Sheet, she is best known for her strong female protagonists in the thriller genre. Richards is from Vancouver, Canada and currently makes her home in Phoenix, Arizona. Linda will have two books published in 2023: The noir thriller DEAD WEST (Oceanview Publishing), third in the Endings series, comes out in September. A work on non-fiction for 9 to 13 year olds, WILD HORSES: RUNNING FREE (Orca Publishing), is out in October.     Submissions for the Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award are being accepted through March 31. Named for the late, pioneering African American crime fiction author Eleanor Taylor Bland, the $2000 award is intended to support the recipient in crime fiction writing and career development activities. The winner may choose to use the grant for activities that include workshops, seminars, conferences, retreats, online courses, and research activities required for completion of their work. You do not have to be a member of Sisters in Crime to submit your materials for consideration.

    This month we’re going to revisit some conversations with previous winners of the award as well as people who have served as judges.

    Yasmin Angoe is the Anthony-nominated author of the critically acclaimed thrillers Her Name Is Knight and They Come At Knight of the Nena Knight series. She is a first-generation Ghanaian American and, in 2020, was the recipient of the Eleanor Taylor Bland Award for Emerging Writers of Color from Sisters in Crime.

    Yasmin’s books were an Amazon Best Book of the Month for Mystery, Thriller & Suspense, and an Editor’s Pick. Her work has received numerous recognitions, was on a billboard in Times Square, Best Of lists, and a Library Journal Starred Review. Her Name Is Knight has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, OprahDaily.com, POPSUGAR, Nerd Daily, the Washington Independent Review of Books, The Guardian, and other platforms.

    The Nena Knight series has been optioned for TV series and is currently in development.

    Yasmin is a proud member of several prestigious organizations, such as Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, Crime Writers of Color, International Thriller Writers, and the Women’s National Book Association.

  • Kimberly G. Giarratano

    Kimberly Giarratano is an author of mysteries for teens and adults. Her debut novel, Grunge Gods and Graveyards, won the 2015 Silver Falchion Award for Best YA at Killer Nashville. A former librarian, she is currently an instructor at a SUNY Orange County Community College and a reviewer for BookPage. She is also the chapter liaison for Sisters in Crime. Born in New York and raised in New Jersey, Kim and her husband moved to the Poconos to raise their three kids amid black bears and wild turkeys. While she doesn’t miss the Jersey traffic, she does miss a good bagel and lox.
