  • American Fiction

Ethan and Mike wrap up Oscar season with American Fiction! Jeffery Wright stars in a movie where he can't get a book sold because the books are just not black enough. So in a drunken rage, he starts writing a book that goes against everything he believes in while using a fake name. The book sells like crazy and hilarity ensues! A strange Oscar movie choice, but hey it calls out previous Oscar winner Green Book so maybe the nomination is another attempt to say the Oscars are not that white after all.

  • Past Lives

For Ethan and Mike, maybe their ancestors knew each other in their Past Lives. Maybe this podcast was inevitable. Maybe our ancestors were also discussing various forms of cave paintings before microphones were invented. Past Lives is another Oscar-nominated movie depicting two folks who separated when they were young and are reconnecting over the years. But things get sticky when 24 years later, Nora is confronted with meeting her long-lost lover in the flesh while she's happily married!

  • Killers of the Flower Moon

Mike and Ethan continue Oscar Month with Killers of the Flower Moon. The latest in Martin Scorsese's extensive filmography. While not directly a mob, it shares some absolute core DNA with what Scorsese is known for. The movie follows Ernest who marries an Osage Native American woman, Mollie, who just happens to be part of a family RICH with oil money. Ernest's uncle is Robert DeNeiro so you know that can only cause trouble for the town and the Osage people. Sit back and relax as we dive into this over three-hour-long epic.

  • Maestro

Mike and Ethan kick off Oscar month with Maestro! Bradly Cooper stars and directs a movie about the life of famous conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felica! It's a biopic about someone related to the movie industry so you know Hollywood went crazy for it! Is it worth the nomination though?

  • What's the Matter with Helen?

Mike and Ethan finish up Shelly Winter's Wonderland with What's the Matter with Helen along with special guest NotTheHoneyBees! While we worked through their suggestions for Shelly Winters movies we wanted to hear a little Shelly Winters lore straight from the source. What's the Matter with Helen is a horror exploitation movie set around two moms who are trying to escape from their murderous son's past. Shelly of course plays a conservative woman while Debbie Reynolds plays someone willing to change themselves completely to have a leg up on life. Ethan and Mike even bring the cosplay out for this special episode!

Find NotTheHoneyBees on Twitch for all of your Carol Channing and Broadway music lore.

  • Bloody Mama

Mike and Ethan meet with Bloody Mama, also known as Ma Barker a real-life crime lord! Ethan wants out immediately, but Mike is sympathetic to Ma and her boys. Ma Barker loved her boys maybe a little too much and they all became psychopaths and wreaked havoc on whatever local communities were nearby. Will this crime family have a happy ending?

Shelly Winters plays Ma Barker. She originally played a parody of Ma Barker in Batman 1966. She was known as Ma Parker and also toted a machine gun. This may have gotten her this role.

Anyway here's the first shot of Shelly Winters as Ma Barker. It sets the scene for the rest of this movie.

  • Carol

To close out this holiday season, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara star in the romantic movie, Carol, which is mostly set during Christmas! They have a thing for each other, but it's the '50s so any same-sex relationship is going to be treated as puppy love or even worse, a mental disorder. How are these two lovebirds going to make it out of this one?? Oh, Cate Blanchett also has a dang husband she's divorcing, and he's always getting in the way! He's as large as a barge and his name is Harge!

  • The Family Stone

The Family Stone feels like a Hallmark movie if it had actual star power behind it. You got Diane Keaton, Racheal McAdams, Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker and more! Let's see what happens when a fun free-spirited guy brings home a conservative girl for Christmas. The drama is like a real Christmas movie because all of the actors sell the drama.

  • Deck the Halls

It's been a while since we've had a truly bad holiday movie on this podcast, but finally, Deck The Halls is here. Starring Matthew Brodrick (Lillard?) and Danny DeVito, this movie centers around someone who just wants to have Christmas a particular way and another person who is an egomaniacal monster. Who is the villain? It's hard to tell if you listen to movie logic!

  • Bad Santa

Oh no, Bad Santa said the F-word! This movie has been wiped from Ethan's mind so it's time to watch it as we kick off our holiday special. This movie is a dark comedy about a professional thief, Willie, who, along with his partner Marcus, poses as a department store Santa Claus during the holiday season to rob malls on Christmas Eve. Also, did you know this movie was produced by the Coen brothers?! Will that make an early 2000s comedy age better because it has two masters of cinema backing it up?

  • Any Given Sunday

Any Given Sunday you'll either win or you'll lose, but The Other Half podcast can be listened to every day, making YOU a winner. We watch the Oliver Stone movie about the game of football and the absolute brutality it takes on the human body and mind. In a stacked movie, Al Pachino plays an aging coach who has to help motivate a young quarterback played by Jamie Foxx, who is incredible in this movie. It's a brutal movie, so brutal the NFL wouldn't allow them to use their teams. But also this movie has something to say about the sport of football and how we treat all-star athletes.

  • Dragnet

Happy Hanksgiving everyone! What's better than gathering around the table with friends and microphones and chatting about Tom Hanks? Almost Plausible's Tomas joins the boys to talk about the movie sendup of the TV show Dragnet. It's a comedy-mystery film from the late '80s that follows two mismatched detectives, Sgt. Joe Friday (Dan Akaroyd) and his new partner, Pep Streebek (Tom Hanks), as they investigate a series of weird crimes in Los Angeles done by P.A.G.A.N.s.

Most important though was the Dragnet music video featuring Dan Akaroyd and Tom Hanks rapping. It has to be seen to be believed.

  • Mona Lisa Smile

Mona Lisa Smile focuses on an all-girls college in the '50s and to help us guide us through there is Ethan's partner, Lindsay. We picked this movie having literally no knowledge of what it's about. Just the title of the film is enough to pique our curiosity. Is Mona Lisa actually in this movie??? Well, other famous artist's works do show up, but none of the characters are in the film. What does show up is the overwhelming force of patriarchal norms that plague what should be a liberal all-girls school. Is the movie as memorable as its title though?

  • Sweet Home Alabama

"Sweet Home Alabama" is a 2002 romantic comedy film starring Reese Witherspoon. The story is about Melanie Smooter, a successful New York City fashion designer who is about to marry the city's most eligible bachelor, Andrew Hennings, played by Patrick Demsey. He's honestly a catch, but actually, there's a catch to her soon-to-be marriage. She has to go down south to finalize her divorce with her ex-husband! Hope he's a real winner.

  • Practical Magic

"Practical Magic" is a 1998 film that is a blend of romantic comedy and magic! The plot centers around the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian, who come from a long line of witches with a family curse that causes any man who falls in love with an Owens woman to meet an untimely death. Things get wacky! But the question is, what's the most practical form of magic? Is it using a spoon to stir your coffee? Or using magic to revive your toxic ex instead of just getting rid of the body?

  • The Mangler

Our third entry for Scream Kings is the 1995 film The Mangler, which was NOT written by Stephen King, but was based on one of his short stories. The plot is about an industrial laundry press possessed by an evil spirit??? Which causes a series of murders/accidents within the laundry facility. Officer John Hunton and Mark work together to uncover the dark secret behind the malevolent machine and stop it from claiming more lives. Weird premise? You ain't seen nothing yet.
