- Ep. 643: Crying for Attention on the Internet
We love a good, cathartic cry as much as the next person, but when it comes to filming ourselves crying and posting it online for the world to see… we’re not sold. Sharing vulnerably is an important part of building a personal brand, but at some point, the vulnerability can become forced, and even manipulative at its worst. Look, we’d be lying if we said we’ve never filmed ourselves crying, but filming yourself doesn’t have to lead to making content out of it. On the other hand, you can’t please everyone. So if blowing snot bubbles on the internet is what excites you, who are we to judge?

It’s been a rough week. Dolly Parton died, women are filming themselves confronting their cheating husbands, and Danny is attempting to masturbate. All that to say, we’re tired. Life in our mid-40’s looks like getting attached to our CAVA routines and going to bed by 8pm, so if everyone else could just do all the social effort for us and if men could just shut the fuck up forever, that would be great.

We’ve made a practice of not taking anything personally but maybe we should be taking things *more* personally. We came across a reel that got us thinking… if we’re all grown ups then surely we know what we’re doing when we hurt people, right? So when someone hurts us, maybe it is personal, and maybe that can give us the strength to walk away.

Maybe it’s the trauma of betrayal, the changing of our hormones, or just general exhaustion, but sex is off the menu. We’ve seen enough non-contextual dicks and had our hearts broken enough time to last a life time. Opening up again sounds like way too much effort, and frankly, so does the act of masturbating. Life looks really different than how we once imagined it would, and we know we’re not alone in this. Maybe you never got to have the things you wanted, or maybe you got everything you thought you wanted, but things still feel empty. Whatever the situation or the circumstance, there’s a real grief surrounding it all. But there’s nothing wrong with that sadness, and when we learn to make peace with it, we can make the best of whatever comes next. That’s how we turn this shit-show into the Best Life. Do we need to be sharing more about our buttholes in order to be successful online? This era of the internet is shaping out to be all about the personal brand, and one way we see people doing that is by sharing some really, really personal things about themselves (no exaggeration about that butthole thing). So if we need to share personal things to build our personal brands, at what point does the sharing become too much? Does the line exist at all? Life is short, but it’s long as hell at the very same time, so if we’re just getting to the half way point… what else is there to do out there? There’s a lot of chatter about the male loneliness epidemic, but men aren’t the only ones who are lonely. Plenty of women are lonely, too, and lonely inside of their marriages and relationships. Women have been holding things down for a long time, and most of us are just tired and resentful now. For us, our saving grace is usually our friendships, but our male counterparts aren’t turning to friends the same way. What it comes down to is this: we all need varied relationships with lots of people, and the care it takes to build those relationships isn’t always easy. That goes for men and women. As AI gets more advanced, we’re seeing an influx of AI “influencers” and it’s getting hard to tell, y’all. And even when we know an account is AI, we still find ourselves comparing our looks and lives to the fake ones, and feeling shitty in the process. We know that “83 year old model” is fake, but she’s still #goals. Unfortunately, we still live in a society that conflates our worth with our looks, and the goal posts just keep moving father back as editing and fake content just keeps flooding our feeds. As much as we wish we could opt out of the beauty rat-race entirely, we find ourselves stuck in it time and time again. But hey, we’re at least trying to own it.

We all know the old adage that hurt people hurt people, and internet bullies are no different. People can take all the pain and suffering they’ve been feeling and use it to fuel their hate comments. The algorithms prioritize and push that hate, and with the added bonus of being able to hide behind anonymous accounts, it’s never been easy to take out your internal pain on random internet strangers.
