High Altitude Trout Production Challenges | Ep. 79

Season 1 | Episode 79

5m | Sep 21, 2026

In this episode of The Aquaculture Podcast Show, we launch a special series exploring aquaculture research and innovation from Chile, sharing practical insights from one of the world’s leading seafood-producing nations.

To open the series, we examine rainbow trout production in a recirculating aquaculture system at 3,000 meters in northern Chile. We explore how low dissolved oxygen, limited alkalinity, acidic conditions, and arsenic affect water quality and fish performance. Despite these constraints, strong survival demonstrates how targeted water management can support production in extreme environments. Listen now on all major platforms!

Inspired by the 2025 article titled "Evaluation of Water Quality in the Production of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) in the Precordilleran Region of Northern Chile" by Renzo Pepe-Victoriano, Piera Pepe-Vargas, Anahí Pérez-Aravena, Héctor Aravena-Ambrosetti, Jordan I. Huanacuni, Felipe Méndez-Abarca, Germán Olivares-Cantillano, Olger Acosta-Angulo, and Luis Espinoza-Ramos
