    Denise has just completed her Masters in Education where she specialised in Language and Literacy. She also has an undergraduate degree in Linguistics. Generally, she has always been interested in languages. Denise currently works as a Speech and Language Advisor on a project called the London EAL project at Speech and Language UK, formerly known as I CAN. Her professional background has always mainly been in the Early Years sector, she has worked as a Senior Early Years Practitioner in a multilingual school and as a remote Early Years Teacher. She has also had lots of research assistant roles in between and the research was always focused on Language and Literacy. Denise is also Ghanaian by heritage and loves giving back to Ghanaian schools in a number of ways.

    Episode Twenty Three - The JONK approach with Marcelo Staricoff 

    Marcelo is the author of ‘The Joy of Not Knowing’ (Routledge, 2021) and a former scientist and Primary School Headteacher. Marcelo is a Lecturer in Education at the University of Sussex and joint course leader of the BA Primary and Early Years Programme. Marcelo has recently worked on behalf of UNICEF with policy makers, educators and textbook writers to help implement a reformed national curriculum in Uzbekistan. Marcelo also works for Coram, the children’s charity, runs courses and acts as an advisor to a number of schools and educational organisations and speaks regularly at national and international events on the principles that underpin the Joy of Not Knowing’s philosophy of education and school leadership. Marcelo is also the author of Start Thinking (Imaginative Minds, 2005) and has published widely in the fields of creative, critical, multilingual, multicultural and philosophical thinking and learning in the classroom. Marcelo is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Education (APPG) and a Trustee of the Laurel Trust and Chair of the Michael Aldrich Foundation. Marcelo’s work and his contributions to education wererecognised in 2019 by being named as a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching and in 2023 when he became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

    Episode Twenty Two - Leading EAL & Teaching Geography with Anna Czebiolko

    Anna Czebiolko began her EAL career as a language support assistant but decided to develop her knowledge by training to teach. Since starting to work with EAL learners in 2009, she has worked with children in every year group from nursery to sixth form. Today, Anna is head of EAL in a secondary school in North Yorkshire (Harrogate Ladies’ College).

    Previously, she coordinated the EAL provision for seven years in a large secondary academy in Leeds. She is always willing to try innovative methods with her students and to share her knowledge with teachers and other practitioners.

    Anna is an active workshop/seminar presenter. She has presented at 5 EAL conferences (3 for NALDIC, 1 in Wales and 1 in Sheffield).

    Cate is currently a doctoral student at the University of Oxford, investigating the effectiveness of using songs for teaching foreign languages to primary school-age children. Prior to joining the Oxford Department of Education where she completed her master's in Applied Linguistics in 2021, Cate taught English and foreign languages in secondary schools and early years settings for 15 years. Cate's curiosity about whether and how songs support foreign-language learning arose as she developed Babel Babies, a multilingual approach to exploring languages and linguistics through singing songs in ten languages. Cate hosts The Language Revolution podcast, exploring how language awareness might inform/transform language teaching with guests including Michael Rosen and David Crystal. She also chairs the annual conference for NALDIC, the national subject association for EAL.

    Our eighteenth episode is a podcast with our guest Aroosa Azam. Aroosa is an ECT in her first year of teaching at a diverse and multicultural school in Harrow. She teaches Sociology, Citizenship and Law. Aroosa studied her PGCE in Citizenship and gained QTS from UCL, Institute of Education, having changed to teaching from career in Law. Aroosa states ‘as someone who wasn’t an EAL learner but has been surrounded by a multilingual family, I find the learning journey of those classified as EAL interesting, and I feel that developing EAL learners is something that should form more of a focus during the earlier years of a teaching career’.

    Mark Hill (MBE ) is an Armed Forces veteran and entrepreneur from Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire. He is founder of Buddy Box. Buddy Box is helping to support Ukrainian and Afghan refugee children attending schools across the UK. Buddy Box has featured in the National Association for Language Development In the Curriculum (NALDIC) - the Professional Association for those working with and for children who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) in the UK - Issue 18, Summer 2022, pages 31 and 32. Buddy Box is an icebreaker, allowing children to effectively communicate with their peers and teachers in a fun and educational way. Buddy Boxes covers the alphabet, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, shapes, colours, classroom items, basic conversations, fruit and vegetables, telling the time and much more.

She has built the organisation from a two-person volunteer project, to the national charity it is today, and leads on overall strategy and direction. Catherine has worked in 16 different countries, including Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti and Jordan. She has published multiple research and policy papers and is a regular speaker at conferences, on panels and in the media. Catherine has a degree from Oxford University, a masters in Education and International Development from the Institute of Education, and is an honorary fellow at Winchester University.

    Jersey’s First Language Policy with Eowyn Crisfield:

    We had an exciting chat with Eowyn Crisfield focusing on her recent work for the Jersey education department. Eowyn Crisfield is a Canadian-educated specialist in bilingualism, bilingualism in education, and teacher-training. She holds a B.Ed. in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language, and a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, with specialisations in language learning and teaching, and bilingual education.

    Eowyn has over 20 years experience in the field of Applied Linguistics, and has a background that covers research, teaching and teacher-training, and supporting bilingual families. Her past institutional experience includes English-language teaching, language department coordination, curriculum development, lecturing in Initial Teacher Education programmes. She is currently also an Senior Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University in English Language and TESOL, with a focus on the PG Cert Teaching Multilingual Learners. She is an active member of several research organisations and is a member of the executive committee of NALDIC (the UK's EAL Subject Association).

    Christina Hingley is an authentically passionate Modern Foreign Languages educator and whole-school co-ordinator at Firth Park Academy, a diverse secondary establishment located in the vibrant city of Sheffield. With more than 60 nationalities and over 30 different languages spoken amongst the student cohort, Christina leads a number of projects to help with language development including developing a full-time New to English intervention, organising in-class mainstream support, and teaching ESOL lessons to KS4 students. Recently, Firth Park Academy’s EAL cohort has evolved to include a growing number of Refugees, particularly Unaccompanied Minors and Looked After Children, and so she has taken on the new challenge of developing pastoral and trauma-informed student support to foster an inclusive, safe, and welcoming learning environment.

    Diversity in Literature:

    In this episode we discuss diversity in children’s books and the importance of equality with Soma Dey, Stephen Dolan and Aleksandra Hempler who work for the EAL Service in Glasgow.

    Soma Dey - She is an English as an Additional Language Leader of Learning for Glasgow City council and a primary teacher of 13 years. She has been part of the EAL team as an EAL teacher for several years. As a team they are working collaboratively across establishments to drive forward equalities for all learners in our Scottish Schools. Their focus recently has been on representation of learners in texts and literature.

    Stephen Dolan - Stevie Dolan is a Secondary teacher in Glasgow. He is part of the EAL Leader of Learning team in the city which delivers CLPL and develops resources to upskill practitioners in EAL pedagogy. He has worked recently with Soma and Aleksandra on CLPL promoting diverse texts in the classroom.

    Aleksandra Hempler - Aleksandra Hempler is an EAL leader of learning for Glasgow City Counil with nearly a decade of experience working for the EAL service, in varied roles. As a linguist and EAL learner she feels passionate about bilingualism, diversity and research based strategies to support language acquisition. She has keen interest in equalities, digital leadership and STEM within EAL provision.

    Episode Seven - Celebrating cultural diversity for International Mother Language Day:

    It is International Mother Language Day on Monday 21st February and in this episode we speak to Dr Francesca La Morgia from Mother Tongues in Ireland to ask how she celebrates languages every day not just on this special day.

    Dr Francesca La Morgia is a linguist and cultural producer based in Dublin. She is the founder and director of Mother Tongues and Mother Tongues Festival.  Dr La Morgia has been delivering training in the area of bilingual language development and bilingual education since 2008. She has an MPhil in Applied Linguistics from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD in bilingual language acquisition from DCU and she lectured at the University of Reading, Trinity College Dublin and Maynooth University. In recent years Francesca has been delivering professional training to mainstream teachers, EAL teachers and teacher trainers in Ireland, Belgium, the UK, Germany and Switzerland. Some of the locations include the European Commission in Brussels, the Ils International School in Geneva, the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Ireland and the EAL teacher network at Leeds University. Her publications include articles in international peer-review journals and books as well as contributions to support materials for the Primary Language Curriculum and a toolkit for using the first language in English medium instruction for Oxford University Press. Her activity book Language Explorers, available in English and Irish, is used in hundreds of schools all over Europe.
