Michael Anderson held his ground on his own front steps. He didn't know yet that the hardest part of that night was still waiting for him inside.

The mailman is back — not at the farmhouse, not in a memory, but standing at the bottom of Michael's porch on Walnut Street, ten feet away, perfectly still. Michael doesn't run. He doesn't speak. He just stands there and lets it look at him until it decides to leave.

At Ironwood, Herald wants details most men wouldn't think to ask for — what it wore, whether it breathed, whether it knew the address before Michael ever pulled into the driveway. Frank says nothing, which is its own kind of answer. And across town, Quinn feels the air change inside the one building in Willow's Bend she's always trusted. She tells Michael almost nothing about it. He tells her even less.

Frank starts putting iron in Michael's hands for real this time — not theory, not a lecture, but rebar and wire mesh and a pattern that's supposed to hold something back. Michael doesn't ask why the metal feels warm before he's even finished bending it.

And then he comes home to find his father standing on the porch like a man who's seen a door he thought he'd locked standing open again. His mother is at the sink, hands shaking, saying a name none of them have said out loud in eleven years. The plan Michael had for this conversation is gone. There's no more room between the life he's built on Walnut Street and the thing that followed him there.
