If I'm grappling with these distractions, chances are, you are too.
As time goes on, we're bombarded with more and more distractions. Our phones, the internet, and social media are just a few culprits. I've found that to stay on track, I have to power down my phone or put it out of reach.
I even have to close my email and limit TV time to meal breaks. Otherwise, productivity takes a nosedive, and my to-do list goes haywire, especially on Mondays.
Social media deserves special mention because it's designed to be addictive. Even though I'm not a fan of many platforms myself, I know people who struggle with constant social media engagement.
With a home-based business, discipline and focus are vital to staying productive because time flies, and if we're not careful, we'll wonder where it all went.
I've started incorporating exercise into my routine, which, while great for health, adds an unexpected layer of fatigue to my day. But there are other reasons distractions creep in.
When you work from home, there's a built-in distraction—the comfort of your surroundings. It's easy to get lost in the view or other non-essential tasks.
Working from home also means less external structure and accountability. Procrastination can creep in, and it's tempting to put things off. Meetings with clients can sometimes spiral into unproductive discussions, and self-accountability often takes a back seat.
It's not meant to be discouraging, but I wanted to share my struggles because I believe in keeping it real.
Recognizing these challenges upfront can help you prepare better and establish the discipline and structure needed for a successful home-based business.
Let's tackle these issues head-on because they're not likely to get easier in the future.

I've been there, my friend. I took a pause from podcasting to focus on writing a book. Why? Because I needed a clear lane to sprint in. It's like pressing pause on a game to plot your moves before you jump back in.
Guess what? My buddy Mike Kim shared this cool trick with me. He's like the Yoda of business stuff. He told me about this Venn Diagram thingy – three circles that overlap.
First, we got the "What gets your blood boiling?" circle – the stuff that really ticks you off. Then there's the "What pulls at your heartstrings?" circle – things that tug your emotions. Last but not least, we got the "What massive problem do you wanna solve?" circle – your superhero mission.
Where these circles meet, that's where the magic happens. It's like finding a treasure map to your focus. It's cool because it also gives you the power to say "no" to certain things. Skipping an opportunity isn't a waste, it's like skipping fries to save room for the burger.
Here's the deal: the internet's noisy, like a crazy busy market. So, the trick is to stand out in that chaos. How? By zooming in on just one or two things. It's like becoming a champ in a single sport rather than being just "okay" in a bunch.
Remember, having lots of interests is rad. But when it comes to business, it's like being Batman – having a few well-chosen gadgets instead of trying to carry every tool in your belt.

Welcome back, my fellow entrepreneurs, to another episode of the Small Business Startup Essentials Show! I'm Tom Clairmont and I’m here to help you work through the issues of having an online personal brand business.
And in this episode, I’ll be talking about one of the perpetual problems that we all seem to have from time to time… going through the motions and getting little results.
So, if you've ever felt stuck in whatever situation you’re in…whether it’s through, the dream process, the planning process or the launch process, and if you’re hitting a barrier in sales or social media, product development, whatever.
Let’s take a little time to unpack this now, so that, hopefully, you’d be able to make significant progress in your business so that you can have some serious results.
Now, we've all experienced those moments when it feels like we're putting in the work, but the results just don't seem to match our efforts, right? It can be so frustrating and really, de-motivating at times, right?
But stick with me here for just a little bit my friend, because today we're going to dive a little deeper into this topic to see how you can turn it around.
First, it's important to take a step back from time to time and look at your approach. Are you simply creating To-Do lists every day and going through the motions?
You know what I mean just checking off the boxes one by one. Going through the tasks without a clear purpose or strategy? Because often (and hey, I’ve been through this), we can get caught up in the day-to-day operations and lose sight of the bigger picture.
Taking a step back to just basically evaluate your time and your processes, goes a long way.
Are you trying to accomplish too much too soon, and maybe you’re finding yourself being spread too thin? You know, here you are with this to do list that you create every day because you’re ambitious and I get it.
It’s good to be ambitious. You want to accomplish a lot every day. But overall, you’re finding that real deep results aren’t happening.
And look, I’ve been through this and I’ve had my share of to do lists and all the things that I want to get done, you know. And I’ve had to be realistic about some of these things that I put on the list that, yeah, I really want to do it. but is it the best timing for me to do it today.
Because if we all create these humongous to do lists or even if they’re not, humongous lists, even if we have short lists, but each tasks it takes an enormous amount of time. It spreads our time too thin you know, and here we are focused on quantity of tasks getting done, but we’re sacrificing the quality in the work.
So I’ve had to learn how to have more reasonable to do lists And actually I find that I accomplished more overall Throughout the span of a day when I take some. Serious breaks in like go for a walk or go for a bike ride or just even, you know, hop in the car and run a few errands because if I’m sitting at my computer all day it gets harder and harder to focus and crank out some quality work.
Because a lot of times I have to create content, like I’m doing now. But if I’m spent emotionally or just drained or just having a hard time focusing because I’ve been sitting in this chair all day long, then the kind of content I’m creating is going to suffer.
And then to add on to that, if I have to talk to people and do Zoom chats with people and I’m not able to really be engaged the way I really need to be or should be engaged because I’ve been sitting in front of this computer all day long then, the kind of coaching that comes from me won’t be the quality that I should be producing.
So I know it sounds sort of counterproductive, to say that you’ll be able to have better results by working less but lately I found that to be true and I’ve heard this from other people too.
Some significant influencers you know, Justin Welch is Huge on LinkedIn; has a huge following. He said the same thing about his productivity. And I believe it was Dan Koe that I heard this from as well.
So I guess what I’m saying here is that by having smaller more reachable goals, we’ll be able to have better results. And hey, you know the concept of making more but doing less has really been something that I’m striving for lately.
So in general, let’s take a look at the tasks that you’re doing where you feel like you’re going through the motions, and maybe rethink the process somehow. Okay?
Should you be doing these things? Or can anybody else be doing them just as well as you and even, you know, even if it doesn’t get done exactly the way you would do it, if having an administrative assistant or a virtual assistant do some of these things you’d be freed up to focus on things that fit into the realm of your strengths.
Because if spending a lot of time in social media really isn’t your thing but you feel compelled that you’ve got to do it, then it’s going to reflect in the kind of content you’re creating.
But that’s just one example. OK, I don’t know your business. I don’t know the things that you’re spending time on where you’re feeling little results, that’s for you to examine.
But I’ll give you another example. So lately, I’ve been scheduling out my social media posts so that I’m good for the next two months, in advance. And that’s just on the posting side, because the real results are in the comments and the conversations.
The real results are in the relationships that I can build. The posting is just step one. The conversations are step 2 and the relationships are always the ultimate goal.
What I don’t want to do is wake up every day going okay. What am I going to post today, right? And then I gotta think about the process again. And come up with content again, right?
So if I put the work in up front, and repurpose the things that I’ve used in the past. Instead of creating new content, every day, I’ll save time overall.
And that’s been a large focus of mine lately with creating content. I’ll create a long form of content like this podcast episode. And then I can take out snippets from it and repurpose it, for social media post for my email list, for videos.
You know, the list goes on. But the whole point of being more efficient with my time is that it frees up some time so that I can focus on other things that will help me to get more results.
I’ll have more time to spend on the things that fall into the scope of my strengths. Instead of the necessary tasks that I have to do every day that I’m not strong at doing and that’s the goal for me anyway, is to focus on my strengths and build on those things instead of trying to get better at the things that I’m not good at because I’m not good at everything.
I don’t know of anybody that is. So let’s get the fun back in building a business and work on ways where we can. build on our strengths.

Today, we're going to tackle this common challenge that many of us have had to deal with from time to time head-on and discover how to get past imposter syndrome to help unlock your true potential. So, let's dive in!
Imposter syndrome—a very common and often paralyzing feeling that many of us experience at some point in our entrepreneurial journey.
It's that nagging voice in our heads that tells us we're not good enough, that we're a fraud, because we’re doing something new and maybe making that later in life pivot and that people just aren’t going to take you seriously.
But let me tell you, my friend, imposter syndrome is just that—a feeling, it’s not a reflection of your true worth.
Now, I’ve written and spoken quite a bit on this topic the last couple of years in one way or another.
Encouraging you to finally step out of the comfort zone and try something new. And launching an online business is definitely something new for a lot of people.
But the first step in overcoming imposter syndrome is to, well, first recognize and acknowledge that you have it and a lot of people go through it.
If you’re wondering how to figure out that you have it, and you’re in the early stages of your business building venture, ask yourself this question: ‘Why am I procrastinating with the things I know I should be doing, but don’t do?’
Is the root of the problem that you just don’t believe in yourself? You’re struggling internally with the concept of who you say you are?
Because people with confidence just do what they need to do. They say what they need to say. It’s not a struggle. It’s sort of a no-brainer for them.
You’re not alone in this journey, and when you’re making this life pivot, the ‘new you’ that you’re creating can come with some new self doubts as well. But these thoughts and feelings are only temporary.
As you prove yourself and your expertise and gain confidence, these feelings will fade and eventually go away. It’s just that initial transition you’re going through that has you feeling this way.
When I revamped my business into the coaching and consulting model, I found that the more I talked to people about it the quicker my confidence grew. And when confidence grows, it pushes out the doubts at the same time.
Time after time, I’d end a Zoom session with someone that wanted my coaching on a particular subject and I’d say to myself, ‘wow’ that felt so good.
Being able to give advice to people that they can use in a practical way…and to have it be received so well was a huge confidence booster.
And then…I had my first Podcast interview where I was the guest and I was the one being interviewed and to have the host of the other Show tell me afterward that it was great conversation that we had and that she thought it was going to be a great episode that will help a lot of people.
But then…to actually hear myself on someone else’s Podcast as the guest was a pivotal moment as well, you know.
Because part of the self doubt we have revolves around the thought ‘can I really do what I’m telling people I can do?’
But then, when you actually do that ‘thing’ you do in small bits and pieces at first and over time, you’re able to actually see yourself, over and over again doing this ‘thing’ with quality and substance, you’ll find that the imposter syndrome fades rather quickly.
It seems a little strange, doesn’t it that we have to prove ourselves to ourselves at first to gain the confidence we need to move forward?
I’ve said this before and I’m sure it won’t be the last time that we need to think about what we’re thinking about and stop playing that negative soundtrack in your head over and over again.
You made it this far in the journey because of your skills and expertise. Yes, you’ve got a long way to go to hit your goal, but we all do. We’re all a work in progress.
But give yourself a pat on the back because you’re working on a plan to more forward BEFORE you’ve got it all figured out. You’re not letting these imposter thoughts stop you to the point of giving up.

So try to find those small opportunities at first for you to test the waters, so to speak, which will provide those little moments that you can look back on and celebrate.
It won’t take long before this whole topic of imposter syndrome is history.
So friend, again, imposter syndrome is a hurdle that many entrepreneurs face on their journey to success. But by recognizing and identifying those thoughts and then challenging those self-doubting thoughts, you can rise above those imposter syndrome feelings and move into the version 2.0 of ‘the new you’ with confidence.

So….you want to be a Solopreneur. Own your own business. Make money online by monetizing your expertise. Fantastic. I’m with you on that concept.
But when I started out, I was under the impression that I had to do it all myself. You know, that ‘solo’ is in Solopreneur for a reason, right?
And with that burden of doing it all myself, comes a bunch of stress and questions that don’t get resolved.
The stress with the misconceptions of having to do everything myself (there are a lot of things I either don’t know how to do or don’t want to do), and the long list of questions I have on how to do these things that never get answered.
Yikes!
It’s a lot for one person…a newbie in the business world, to go through.
But after awhile, I started to understand that I didn’t have to be alone on this venture. I joined a local networking group through BNI (Business Network International) and met with them once a week for a couple of years.
I met some great people and established some friendships along the way and it was ok (not great) while it lasted. I guess, overall, with the expense of the BNI membership, and then to pitch in for the extra expenses of the meeting room at a local café, plus to contribute toward the food/drinks for the group each week, I think I broke even overall.
But beyond BNI, I was able to break out of that ‘solo’ mindset. I was able to think beyond myself in how to operate and build my business.
So, if you’re not good with accounting? (I’m not) Hire an accountant.
Feel overwhelmed with some of the daily tasks that need to get done, or if you just want to finish a small project faster? Hire a virtual assistant.
Don’t have the funds to hire anyone yet? You can always get an intern to help you so they can gain experience.
The Ultimate Goal
But the overall concept of ‘Solopreneur’ is still the same. This business you want to start isn’t about having employees or a lot of overhead. It’s about having a small business that you can manage yourself, from anywhere.
As I’m typing this now, I’m on my back porch looking out at the woodsy back yard watching a neighbors cat stare down an intruding bird.
My goal is to be able to work from anywhere; to have a 100% portable business.
I can:
· create content for social media,
· do Zoom calls with clients or others that want to connect
· work on the latest book project
· develop an online course or webinar that I want to promote
…from anywhere.
But, sometimes I see people struggle with the thought of not being the only person in the business. They want to do it all. And I get it, there’s a feeling of ownership and control that strokes the ego.
This is MY business. I’ll do it my way, as the song goes (if you’re in my generation, you’ll get that reference).
But doing it alone can be a hindrance to progress and building your business. You need to have time to work on the things that can make the most impact for sales. Yep, there’s that naughty word that people don’t like to hear.
But everything boils down to sales. Otherwise, you’re just working on building a hobby.
If you’re bogged down with doing too many other things, then the things that matter the most won’t get the attention it deserves. I’ll give an example.
Recently, I needed to have some notes put into about 150 episodes to someone’s Podcast. Could I have done it myself? Yes. Did I want to do it myself? No.
So, I hired a temp to do it for me. This freed up hours of time that I could spend on other things that I needed to focus on.
Leading Yourself by Knowing Yourself
So growth, when it happens is more manageable that way. And hey, we all want growth, right? We all want more business. But we don’t want more stress and feeling overwhelmed either.
I heard of the military training concept of ‘knowing yourself so you can lead yourself’ and that really stuck in my head. Because that’s what I’m getting at here. Knowing yourself and your strengths and weaknesses and then making the best decisions on how to run and grow your business.
That way, you don’t get in your own way. You’re not making decisions on how to spend your time or money in a way that leaves you feeling like you’re the one that has to get it all done…yourself.
Now, I’ve taken some personality tests in the past and they’ve helped to shed light on my strengths and weaknesses from time to time. Getting to know how I’m wired and if there’s a short circuit in my head..just kidding. They can help to also give some insight on what skills I might be a better fit for as well.
I like the Myers/Briggs test or the DISC test, the enneagram has it’s place as well.
If I’m an introvert and like to stay to myself, then maybe I’ll be better at doing the tasks that are done in the background, like creating long form content, or writing a book.
If I’m an extrovert, then I might be better at creating a lot of videos for social media and it won’t seem like a chore to me.
But you get where I’m going with this right? Get to know your strengths and weaknesses so that you can lead yourself and your solo business better.
Now, after taking the personality test, it can be hard to accept the results sometimes though. So be open to what they have to say, but at the same time, we can evolve over the years and work on improving one area or another as well.
But the goal here is to have a thriving business that you’re enjoying. The goal is to improve your life and lifestyle so that you’re living your best life.
That’s my goal and I hope it’s yours as well.
