Before dawn break, on New Year's Day, 1998, 21-year-old Ben Smart and 17-year-old Olivia Hope were looking for a place to crash after spending the evening celebrating with other partygoers in the Marlborough Sounds, in New Zealand. They were last seen getting out of a water taxi and boarding a yacht after a strange man offered them a place to sleep off the champagne on board his boat. Not the greatest of decisions, but they needed a place to sleep because other partygoers had taken the place they had originally booked. They would never be seen again - and their bodies and belongings have never been found.
What followed was a five-month-long investigation into Scott Watson, who the police believed was the strange man who had offered up his yacht. However, the investigation was rife with accusations of prejudice and police incompetence, while Scott Watson maintained his innocence. This was a case based solely on circumstantial evidence and statements given by jailhouse informants - highly controversial particularly in a high-profile double-murder case like this one.
Yet it was enough to convict Scott and sentence him to life behind bars, which he has spent the last 26 years fighting.
So dim the lights, put your phone down and listen to the story of Scott Watson, who believes the case against him was a mistrial of justice and just finished his last bid for freedom, full of shocking accusations against the people who are supposed to protect us.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy29m - Jun 19, 2024 - Angelika Graswald: The Controversial Story of the Kayak Killer
It was the early evening hours of Sunday, April 19, 2015. Vincent Viafore and his fiancee Angelika Graswald were trying to enjoy a kayaking adventure in the Hudson River, but the water was cold and choppy, and they were not adequately prepared for the conditions. For one - Vincent wasn’t wearing a life vest and his kayak was missing a drain plug. Disaster struck as they tried to cross the river, leaving from Bannermans Island and heading towards Plum Point Park. Vincent’s kayak started to take in water, eventually capsizing, leaving him to drown in the choppy water. Angelika called 911 on her cell phone from her kayak, but by the time emergency services arrived, it was far too late to save her fiancee. His body wouldn’t be recovered from the water until a month later.
When Angelika was questioned about how things had taken such a tragic turn, she made several statements that raised the alarm and had detectives wondering whether this was truly an accident or if she had planned his murder. Then there was the detail about the missing drain plug, which she admitted to removing from his kayak herself, and witnesses who claimed they saw her pull Vincent’s paddle away from him intentionally keeping him in the water. Her motive? A $550,000 life insurance policy, according to investigators.
So dim the lights, put your phone down and listen to the story of Angelika Graswald, dubbed the “kayak killer” by the media - who some believe was treated unfairly because she was a woman. In contrast, others think she got away with the perfect murder.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy30m - Jun 13, 2024 - Ramona Brown: The Night the Fire Took Her
The date was March 6th, 1984, the night before Mardi Gras. Hailing from New Orleans, The Brown family, which included parents Johnnie Mae and Aubrey Brown and their 10 children, spent the evening getting ready to celebrate. Excitement was in the air in anticipation of the music, food and floats that they were going to be able to enjoy. The kids were put down to bed early that night so that they would be well-rested for the festivities the next day. And then, around 3 am when the house was quiet and still, tragedy struck. Flames ripped through the single-level family home, as Johnnie Mae attempted to get all of her babies out safely while her husband Aubrey Brown tried to throw buckets of water on the growing fire.
As the family stood on the front lawn, watching firefighters attempt to put out the blaze, they noted that three of the children were unaccounted for. Tragically, once the flames were extinguished, the bodies of two-year-old Kevin and four-year-old Aubrey Junior would be recovered, but where was three-year-old sister Ramona? Firefighters would search the burned remains of the house looking for any signs of the toddler, but there were none. It was puzzling - but even more so when Ramona’s six-year-old sister told her parents a story almost too shocking to be true. Older sister, Simona, claimed that that Ramona had made it out of the house and she saw her get into a car with a couple who had stopped in the street to offer help. After sharing this story, Simona stopped talking for years.
It wasn’t until 2018 when Simona reported what she had seen to the police and an active missing persons investigation began.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy25m - Jun 8, 2024 - Johnny Kitagawa: The J-Pop Predator
One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Tokyo was the smiling faces of J-Pop idols posted everywhere - large billboards, moving trucks, subway cars. Japan has the second largest music market in the world, mostly due to the rising popularity of J-Pop, with millions of fans in Japan and all around the world.
One man, known as Johnny Kitagawa, considered the grandfather of J-pop, is responsible for creating idols out of hundreds of young boys who dreamed of being famous. But few know the dark secrets this man, his company and the Japanese media have kept hidden for decades. Johnny Kitagawa allegedly abused hundreds of pre-teen and teen boys who wanted nothing more than to become a J-Pop star. The stories of sexual abuse were kept quiet by many, due to greed, shame, a culture that has denied that males can be raped and the making of a legend out of a monster.
Only in his death has the truth of Johnny Kitagawa and his company “Johnny & Associates” finally come to light.
So dim the lights, put your phone down and listen to the story of how one of Japan’s most beloved and celebrated predators was enabled to abuse hundreds of boys for almost 60 years, while the media and law enforcement looked the other way.

It was the very early morning of March 9, 2019 - around 3:30 am, before the sun came up. 25-year-old Aubrey Dameron walked into the living room and told her mother and brother that she was off to meet a friend. She doesn’t specify who this friend is - but she leaves home without her purse or her anti-seizure medication, which she is supposed to carry with her at all times as she suffers from epilepsy. She wouldn’t return home and after a few days of no contact with her family - they reported her missing to the police.
Aubrey is a high-risk victim - she is a beautiful, proud Cherokee woman living through a time when violence against Indigenous women is at an all-time high. She is also transgendered and identifies as Two-Spirit, a Native American term that describes a person who identifies as having both a masculine and a feminine spirit.
There are a lot of suspicious circumstances surrounding Aubrey’s disappearance - including a bloody sock found near her home, a ransom call and a confession- and her family believes she might be the victim of a hate crime.
This is the story of Aubrey Dameron and her family's fight for the truth.
If you know anything about Aubrey's disappearance, call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or go online at https://tips.fbi.gov/ - or call the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service at 918-207-3800.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy28m - May 28, 2024 - Noah Presgrove: A Small Town Secret
On September 4th, 2023, at around 5:53 am, 19-year-old Noah Presgrove was found dead on the side of an Oklahoma highway. It was a bizarre scene - Noah was found wearing mismatched shoes, with only one of the shoes belonging to him. His shorts were found a few feet away from his body, along with three pieces of white metal chain and part of his tooth. There were two chunks of hair found - one on the roadway and one on his right butt cheek. Noah had attended a party earlier that evening, where there was a ton of alcohol involved. He had also been involved in an ATV accident at the party but was not seriously injured.
At first glance, it appeared that he may have been the victim of a hit-and-run while walking home from the party, but his autopsy results would show that may not be the case. His cause of death was labelled “undetermined”, while his manner of death was a result of multiple blunt-force injuries, including trauma to his skull - almost splitting it in two, his neck, torso, teeth and tongue.
It would later be revealed that Noah had been involved in an argument shortly before leaving the party and now many, including his family, wonder if someone purposely took his life.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is not currently investigating Noah’s death as a homicide, however, Noah’s family wants answers and is raising money to hire a private investigator.
We’re going to talk about all of the reasons Noah Presgrove’s suspicious death deserves to have a second look.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy26m - May 22, 2024 - Sebastian Rogers is Missing: What Goes Bump in the Night?
It was the morning of February 26, 2024, and it was supposed to be a day like any other. At around 6am, Katie Proudfoot walked into the bedroom of her 15-year-old son, Sebastian Rogers, to wake him up for school. To her shock, she found his room empty - he was gone. Not in his room and nowhere to be found elsewhere in their Tennessee home. Yes, Sebastian was a teenager and sometimes they can be notorious for sneaking out or leaving without telling their parents where they’re going - but in Sebastian’s case, his absence was particularly alarming. He’s a bright young man, but he also has high-functioning autism and wasn’t known to ever leave the house on his own.
Katie called her husband, Sebastian’s step-father, who was working out of town at the time and he alerted the police to their missing son. Both state and local authorities, as well as search parties spearheaded by Sebastian’s father, Seth Rogers, have utilized drones, helicopters and canine to try to locate the teen - but it has been months without any sign of Sebastian.
With no obvious signs of foul play, it begs the question - how can a 15-year-old-run away leaving absolutely no trail behind? We’re going to talk through the timeline, the searches and a possible recent sighting of Sebastian with the hope that someone out there knows something that might help to bring him home.

It was the summer of 1995. 13-year-old Thad Phillips had fallen asleep in his living room watching a movie. Suddenly, he awoke to the feeling of someone lifting him up and carrying him away - initially he thought maybe it was his dad, bringing him upstairs to bed. But it wasn’t. The person holding him was an older teen boy named Joe Clark. Joe carried Thad outside of his home and asked him to follow him to help fix his broken-down car. Still half asleep, Thad agreed, following Joe all of the way to a rundown broken home. He followed Joe into the home, not realizing he was about to endure the most terrifying, painful 43 hours of his life. The teenage boy that Thad thought could be a friend turned into his worst nightmare.
Joe loved the sound of bones breaking. He attacked Thad, twisting and turning his ankles until his bones shattered and splintered, making it nearly impossible for the young boy to get away. After two days of being tortured, miraculously, Thad was able to escape with his life. He was lucky, because as it turned out - he wasn’t the only victim of Joe Clark, but he was the only one to live.
This is the story of Thad Phillips, the lone survivor of the bone breaker killer.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy28m - May 14, 2024 - Teresita Basa: She Solved Her Own Murder From Beyond the Grave
One early morning in February 1977, the Chicago fire department responded to a call reporting billowing smoke coming from one of the units at the Pine Grove Avenue apartments. After putting out the flames, they discovered that this was much more than a simple fire - it was a crime scene. Inside the smokey apartment, they found the body of Teresita Basa, a middle-aged healthcare worker originally from the Philippines. She had been stabbed to death, and still had the butcher knife lodged in her chest.
When police searched the apartment for any clues as to who may have done this to Teresita - they found only one: a note that read, “Get theater tickets for A.S.” Beyond that, there wasn’t really any evidence left behind and her murder went unsolved for months. That is - until they received a call from a man who claimed to know the name of the killer.
How did he know? He said his wife had gone into a trance while taking a nap, she began to speak in a strange voice, identifying herself as the victim Teresita - and naming her killer as a man named Allan Showery. As you can imagine, initially the police were skeptical - but when they began to investigate Allan Teresita’s killer, things began to line up.
Did Teresita Basa solve her own murder from beyond the grave?

“If he catches me, he will make me disappear,” was one of the last things wife and mother of three, Amy Mullis, allegedly told the man she was having an affair with just a few months before she was found lying face down with a corn rake sticking out of her back. She would die from her injuries received in what was initially believed to be a freak farm accident. However during her autopsy, it was revealed that Amy had sustained six stabs to her back - when the corn rake only had 4 prongs - meaning, the corn rake entered her back more than once. Police believed she was murdered - and they were looking directly at her husband, Todd Mullis, as suspect #1. However, Todd had an alibi – the couple’s 13-year-old son.
So was Amy Mullis really murdered or was this some kind of freak accident? And if she was murdered, was it her husband who did it? He did have an alibi and there were other people on the farm that day who may have wanted to hurt Amy.

28-year-old Kanika Powell was a young military veteran who lived in an apartment by herself in Prince George County, Maryland. She has been described as a strong, independent woman, whose life experiences made her very capable of handling stressful situations. However, all of that would change in August 2008, when Kanika would receive a series of strange visitors to her front door. The first was a man, dressed in plain clothing, claiming to be an FBI agent, who refused to produce a badge to prove his identity.
Kanika was shaken to her core, especially when this was followed up by a man who claimed to be a FedEx driver, demanding she open her door so that he could deliver a package - one he was not carrying. She thought that someone was after her - and her suspicions were confirmed when on August 28, 2008, she returned home after running some errands and was gunned down in the hallway of her apartment building.
Kanika’s killer has never been caught - leaving her family to wonder who had targeted her and why.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy26m - Apr 29, 2024 - John Christie: The Bad Neighbour/Sex Strangler of Notting Hill
John Christie was a World War 1 and 2 veteran who lived with his wife Ethel in the bottom floor flat of 10 Rillington Place, a low-income apartment building in London’s Notting Hill district. In the 50s, there was a media storm when one of the tenants living in the same building as John, a man named Timothy Evans, was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and baby daughter - despite claiming innocence. John and his wife were star witnesses in that trial, testifying that their upstairs neighbours, Timothy and his wife, argued constantly and the night before her murder they had heard a loud thud. Timothy was hanged for his crime - and life went back to normal for John and Ethel Christie.
That is - until another tenant of 10 Rillington Place made a horrifying discovery: the bodies of six women hidden in the walls, floors and garden of the building. One of the bodies found was Ethel Christie, John’s wife - leading the police to believe that John Christie had murdered her along with the other women hidden in his flat. This respected war veteran was a serial killer - and what he did to his victims is particularly disturbing.
With this shocking revelation, many wondered if John Christie had also killed Timothy Evan’s wife and baby years prior, meaning they had hanged an innocent man - a grieving husband and father. John Christie would be dubbed the Sex Strangler of Notting Hill - but had he also framed Timothy for murder?

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy32m - Apr 20, 2024 - Timothy Evans: A Damning Confession and the Bodies in The Wall
In 1950 Timothy Evans was accused of murdering his wife Beryl, and their baby girl, Geraldine. Timothy, a simple man who couldn’t read or write, lived with his little family in London’s Notting Hill district in the top floor flat. He refuted the accusations, instead claiming that it was actually his downstairs neighbour, John Christie, who killed his wife and daughter during a botched home abortion.
John Christie was a World War 1 and 2 veteran who lived in the ground floor flat with his wife, Ethel. He would serve as the chief prosecutor’s witness during Timothy’s murder trial, where Timothy was ultimately convicted and sentenced to hang. But just three years after Timothy’s execution, a shocking discovery would be made. Bodies would be discovered in the walls and under the floorboards of John’s ground-floor flat.
Had Timothy been telling the truth about his neighbour being the real killer? Was this respected war veteran, John Christie, actually a serial killer, who framed Timothy for murder? And what impact would all of this have on England’s justice system?

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy25m - Apr 15, 2024 - Lauren Hugelmaier: It Wasn't the Cough Medicine
In the early morning hours of September 1st, 2017, around 1 am, a North Carolina 911 dispatcher receives a phone call from 29-year-old Matthew Phelps, an aspiring pastor. He says, “I think I killed my wife. I had a dream, and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor…I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did it. I can’t believe this.”
Matthew claimed that he had “accidentally” stabbed his wife to death while under the influence of cough medicine. 29-year-old Lauren Hugelmaier lay on their bedroom floor, having been stabbed 123 times. While the medicine that Matthew had taken can cause euphoria, agitation, and even psychoses, would a jury believe it as a defence to murder? Perhaps not, after Matthew’s dark side, history of violence and a secret Instagram account was revealed.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy26m - Apr 8, 2024 - Kenneth Parks: The Sleepwalking Murder
In the early morning hours of May 24, 1987, Kenneth Parks got up from the sofa where he had been watching TV, got into his vehicle and drove 20 km - or 12 and a half miles - from his home in Toronto to his in-laws home in Scarborough. He used the spare key that they had given him to enter the residence and proceeded to the master bedroom, where he found his mother and father-in-law sleeping in their bed. He proceeded to bludgeon his mother-in-law with a tire iron, which he had brought with him from home, before proceeding to choke his father-in-law. Then, he got into his car and drove to the nearest police station, where he turned himself in saying “I think I have just killed two people.”
And open and shut case for murder right? Wrong. Because Kenneth Parks had a story that could save him from sentence of life in prison. He claimed that he was sleepwalking during the murder and was completely, unconscious and unaware of what he was doing until he surrendered to the police. While sleep experts battled the prosecution in court, testifying in support of Kenneth Parks’ sleepwalking defence, much of the public at the time thought he was lying - making up this story of sleepwalking so that he could get away with murder.
Kenneth Park’s sleepwalking murder trial was front page of papers around the world as it set a precedence for the level of responsibility one has for their actions done when in a state of sleep.

14-year-old British Columbia teenager Reena Virk struggled to fit in. She was relentlessly bullied from elementary school, all the way to high school. Self-conscious about her looks and struggling with her strict religious parent's rules, times were tough. So on Nov. 14, 1997, when she received a phone call inviting her out to a social gathering, she gladly accepted. She had no idea the invite was all a part of a revenge plan - retaliation for spreading rumours about one of the other girls. Shortly after arriving, she was swarmed by a group of 8 teenagers and severely beaten. When she tried to stumble home, two of them followed her and dragged her down below a bridge, where they continued to beat her before drowning her in the water. Reena’s brutal murder at the hands of a group of teens prompted people across the country to take a closer look at growing violence and bullying amongst young Canadians - and it’s a reminder of the importance of raising an empathetic, caring future generation.

Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy27m - Mar 29, 2024 - Amanda Wienckowski: A Decades-Long Fight for Truth
Life was not always easy for 20-year-old Amanda Wienckowski. At one point, her friends and family had to watch her struggle with an addiction that had her spending time with undesirable people on the wrong side of town. But she was trying to get her life back on track, even enrolling in a criminal justice course at her local community college. However, on the evening of December 5, 2008, her life was cut short. According to Adam Patterson, Amanda was dropped off that night at Antoine Garner’s home, which was located in a dangerous neighborhood.
When a few days passed and she failed to return home, her mother reported her missing to the police. They interviewed Adam Patterson, the man who allegedly dropped her off at Garner’s home and he said initially he was going to wait for her to return to the car, but she called and told him he could leave - so he did. However, Antoine Garner, the man Amanda was seeing that evening, claimed she only stayed for a few minutes and then left with Patterson. Their stories did not match up and investigators believed Amanda may have been a victim of foul play.
Then, approximately five weeks later, the police received an anonymous tip pointing them to a parking lot where they would find Amanda’s body in a garbage bin. She was found nude, face down, with her hair shaved off and covered in bruises. What looked like an apparent murder would be ruled an accidental opiate overdose, sparking a decades-long fight for truth.
It has been over 15 years since Amanda’s battered body was found in that garbage bin and her family continues to push to have her manner of death changed to homicide. Many believe that there is police corruption and a cover-up at play, and once we go through the details - I think you’ll see why.

In 2014, YouTuber and experienced hiker, Kenny Veach, who went by the handle ‘snakebitmgee’ seemingly vanished while looking for a mysterious cave in the Mojave Dessert. The first time he discovered this cave, which was shaped like a perfect letter ‘M’, he said his whole body began to vibrate and the feeling only grew stronger as he got closer to the entrance. After commenting about this strange cave on a YouTube video, he received a slew of responses from people who thought he was lying. On November 10th, Kenny would set out to find the cave again - he was supposed to bring his video camera with him to document the whole thing. Only this time - Kenny would never return.
It has been almost 10 years since Kenny Veach set out into the Mojave desert in search of the M cave never to be seen again and there is no shortage of theories as to what may have happened to him.

One night, as he stumbled out of a bar with only $3 in his bank account, Dan Saunders made a simple decision that would change his luck and his life forever. He stopped at an ATM on his way home to try to withdraw cash from his nearly-maxed-out credit card and discovered a glitch in the system. Somehow, the bank machine allowed him to withdraw a lot more money than the balance in his account. He was planning to report it to the bank, but when he tried to withdraw even more cash, he realized he had uncovered a loophole that would allow him to withdraw an endless amount of cash forever - as long as he stopped on top of things. Why spoil a good thing?
So instead of calling the bank to let them know about the glitch, he spent the next four months living a life of total luxury, buying suits, gambling in Vegas and taking lavish vacations. However, as with most things - if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
