What kind of environment have you created for the presence of God?

We often ask God to come closer. We pray for Him to move. We seek another encounter, another moment, another visitation.

But what if God is asking a deeper question?

I’m willing to come close, but have you built a life where I am welcome to stay?

The question isn’t simply, Did you feel God today?

The deeper question is: Is God at home in you?

Maybe you don’t need another visitation.

Maybe you need to open a door you’ve already closed.

Don’t keep asking God to come close while building a life that gives Him nowhere to stay.

Visitation says, “God, come over.”

Habitation says, “God, move in.”

Open the door. Give Him the keys. Let God be at home.

Everybody’s got a front.

There’s the Instagram version. The TikTok version. The church version. The work version. The family version.

But what happens when life doesn’t go your way?

In Matthew 5:33-48, Jesus moves beneath the surface and exposes what our words, reactions, relationships, and responses reveal about our character. He confronts religious loopholes, manipulative speech, retaliation, conditional love, and the desire to look righteous without actually becoming righteous.

Jesus essentially says: No cap.

Your words reveal your integrity.

Your response reveals your heart.

Your love reveals your character.

And your character reveals who you are becoming.

In this message, we explore:

• YOUR WORDS: Why Jesus says your “Yes” should be yes and your “No” should be no.

• YOUR RESPONSE: How to respond when someone hurts, insults, or takes advantage of you without becoming like the person who hurt you.

The question isn’t simply, Are you doing the right things?

The deeper question is: What is coming out of you when life doesn’t go your way?

Because eventually, what comes out reveals what is inside.

And none of us can manufacture this kind of life through willpower alone.

We need Jesus, the One who told the truth when it cost Him everything, refused retaliation when He was falsely accused, prayed for His executioners, loved His enemies, and gave His life for people who didn’t deserve it.

The One who commands us to love, forgive and pray for our enemies is the One who demonstrated it from the cross.

LOOPHOLES: Following Jesus When Obedience Isn’t Convenient

What if the biggest danger to your faith isn’t rebellion but finding a loophole?

In Matthew 5:31–32, Jesus confronts divorce, but His teaching reaches far beyond marriage. He exposes something deeper: the human tendency to look for the minimum requirement necessary to justify what we already want.

The world asks, “What can I get away with?”

Religion asks, “What is technically permissible?”

Jesus asks, “What does love require?”

How does someone end up destroying their marriage, ministry, or future?

Jesus answers that question by exposing where sin really begins, not in our actions, but in our hearts.

Jesus said, “I did not come to abolish the Law… but to fulfill it.” What did He mean?

Jesus confronts two kinds of people religion often produces: the self-righteous who believe they’ve done enough, and the exhausted who believe they’ll never be enough. In Matthew 5:13, Jesus looks at a group of ordinary people, fishermen, laborers, farmers, widows, and the overlooked and makes one of the most shocking declarations in human history:

“You are the salt of the earth.”

“You are the light of the world.”

Not Caesar. Not Rome. Not the religious elite.

The future of the world was entrusted to disciples.

Blessed: The Counter-Cultural Path to Flourishing

What if everything culture calls success is leaving people empty?

We live in the most connected generation in history, yet loneliness is rising. We have more entertainment, more influence, more opportunities, and more ways to build a personal brand than any generation before us.

Yet beneath the success, many people are quietly asking: “If I achieve everything I’ve ever wanted… why do I still feel empty?”

In this powerful message from Matthew 5:1-6, Jesus confronts humanity’s definition of success and reveals a radically different path to true flourishing.

What happens when God truly changes a person?

Jesus teaches that spiritual transformation doesn’t stop with what happens inside of us, it eventually changes how we live, love, serve, forgive, and respond to the world around us.

In Part 2 of our study through the Beatitudes, we move from the inner life of the Kingdom to the outward expression of Kingdom character.

The first four Beatitudes reveal how God transforms the heart:

• Poor in Spirit: “I need God.”

• Those Who Mourn: “Sin has broken things.”

• The Meek: “I surrender control.”

• Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness: “Now I want what God wants.”

But Jesus doesn’t stop there.

Once God changes what is happening IN you, He begins changing what flows THROUGH you.

Pursue purity.

Make peace.

Endure faithfully.

Don’t settle for admiring Jesus’ teachings. Become the kind of person His Kingdom can flow through. Because the goal of discipleship isn’t merely information.

It’s transformation.

And what God does in you, He intends to do through you.

here’s a difference between being in the crowd around Jesus… and becoming someone who carries His authority.

• The Mission Flows From His Authority. The power of the mission is not in the messenger, but in the King who sent him.
• His Presence Is Our Confidence. When Jesus is with you, you are never outmatched by your assignment.
• We Are Vessels, Not the Source. God doesn’t look for perfect or gifted people, He looks for available ones.

As you go in everyday obedience, God moves through your life to reach people, reveal His presence, and release His power.

OUR UNIQUE EXPRESSION

Why sometimes our church feels too much for one person and not enough for another.

AVL City Church is the bridge between Word and Spirit. This is by design.

John 4:23-24 NASB But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

We live in a world where some people are all about the Word of God: Scripture, doctrine, order, theology, clarity. Or what we can call the head.

And some people are all about the Spirit of God: power, passion, presence, encounters, movement. Or what we can call the heart.

Both are essential. Both are biblical. Both are life-giving.

But here’s the challenge: how to get both at the same time and in the same space.

• Some feel fed by teaching but overwhelmed by Spirit.
• Some are ignited by Spirit but confused by teaching.

And that’s where we live. That’s our tension. That’s our calling.

• One person may say: “This is too spiritual.”
• Another may say: “This is not spiritual enough.”

Both are seeing truth, just from different lenses. 

Our role is to hold the balance without compromising either.

So what does that mean practically?

Our expression, the way we worship, teach, pray, and lead, is intentionally designed to:

1. Honor Scripture: because truth matters. The Word is our foundation.

2. Honor the Spirit: because God is alive and moving today. Presence matters.

• This is the tension God calls us to hold: it can feel uncomfortable, but it is necessary.
• Jesus says the Father seeks “true worshipers” — fully alive, fully informed, fully surrendered.

So if it sometimes feels too much or not enough, remember: that’s the bridge we’re building.

That’s our expression. That’s the tension we’ve chosen because we’re pursuing the fullness of God in a way that honors both His Word and His Spirit.

We want to reawaken the hunger.

We want to ask “Did heaven move?” not “Was it good?”

People will keep returning where God is not only explained but also experienced.

We bring our plan and also our surrender.

We build the Altar and wait for the Fire

When we embrace it together, when we hold it in faith and unity, we become the church God intended, a place that disciples, empowers, and moves in both revelation and power.

Jesus invites us to activity “Come and See” and “As you go, Make Disciples”.
