Mark Chapters 1 - 3 Q&A: Bible Study by Atheists

Season 43 | Episode 5
1h 24m | Sep 29, 2026

Mark wastes absolutely no time. No baby Jesus. No wise men. No genealogy. We start with John the Baptist dunking people in the Jordan, an alleged quotation from Isaiah that also contains Malachi, and Jesus getting baptized before launching straight into demons, healings, disciples, and religious controversy. Naturally, this raises questions. Why does Jesus need baptism? Did John invent the practice? Why do some manuscripts call Jesus the “Son of God” while others don't? And if this is the infallible Word of God, why were later scribes apparently cleaning up an awkward attribution problem? As Husband puts it, contradictions are one thing... insisting the text is “exactly 100% true” is another.

Then Mark 2 gives us Jesus forgiving a paralyzed man's sins before healing him, which launches us into the uncomfortable biblical relationship between disability, illness, sin, and divine judgment. We also revisit the magnificent decision to tear a fucking hole in Simon-called-Peter's roof to get the guy in front of Jesus. From there, Jesus eats with tax collectors, announces himself as the bridegroom, challenges fasting traditions, and decides that the Sabbath was made for humans, not humans for the Sabbath. That's a nice sentiment, except the Hebrew Bible's Yahweh was considerably less flexible about Sabbath violations. Jesus increasingly looks less like someone merely interpreting Judaism and more like someone claiming the authority to decide what the rules mean.

By Mark 3, the Sabbath fight escalates when Jesus heals a man's withered hand and the Pharisees and Herodians start plotting against him. Meanwhile, Mark's world is apparently crawling with supernatural activity, yet nobody seems particularly shocked that Jesus can perform miracles... the argument is over what his miracles mean and whether he's violating religious law while doing them. We also dig into the Messianic Secret, where Jesus repeatedly tells demons and healed people to shut up about who he is while simultaneously attracting crowds large enough to nearly crush him. It's either theology, a clever literary device, or the worst-kept secret in ancient history.

Finally, things get wonderfully awkward when Jesus' own family shows up because they think he's out of his mind. Instead of reassuring Mom, Jesus effectively replaces his biological family with the people following him. Add Beelzebub, Satan casting out Satan, the unforgivable sin, Wife's discovery that atheists may technically be incapable of committing it, and Husband describing the Holy Spirit as “the fucking super glue of Christianity,” and we've got ourselves a Q&A. Come for the biblical scholarship; stay for the theological family drama.

📌 Topics Covered:

  • Mark 1's Isaiah/Malachi problem — when “as it is written in Isaiah” apparently means “Isaiah...plus this thing from Malachi.”
  • Did John the Baptist invent baptism? Nope. We dig into Jewish ritual immersion and how John transformed an existing purification practice into something centered on repentance.
  • Jesus heals the paralyzed man — but first forgives his sins, because apparently getting dropped through somebody's roof wasn't dramatic enough.
  • Jesus versus the Sabbath — a surprisingly big problem when Yahweh previously treated Sabbath observance as considerably more than a friendly suggestion.
  • The Pharisees and Herodians team up — groups that weren't exactly natural allies suddenly find common ground in “What the fuck are we going to do about Jesus?”
  • The Messianic Secret — Jesus keeps telling everyone not to tell anyone about Jesus while everyone continues telling everyone about Jesus. Excellent secrecy.
  • The unforgivable sin — what does “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” actually mean, and can atheists even manage to commit it if we don't believe Satan or God exists?
  • Jesus' family thinks he's lost it — Mary and the brothers come looking for him, and Jesus responds by redefining who counts as his family. Nothing cult-adjacent to discuss there whatsoever.

💬 Best Quote from the Episode:

“The Holy Spirit is... the fucking super glue of Christianity.”
