The Booth In The Back | Roadside Notes — A Faith and Good Courage Journal Reading | Ep61

Season 1 | Episode 61
4m | Nov 5, 2026

The Booth in the Back is where you go when you don’t want to be the first thing someone sees when they walk through the door. I know this because I’ve sat in it. Not always. But enough times to understand what it means to choose the corner over the counter. To want the coffee without the conversation. To need the room around you without needing to be part of it.

Every diner on Route 66 has one. The booth in the back that fills last and empties first and spends most of its time holding the people the rest of the room isn’t paying much attention to. I’ve made it a habit to notice that booth. Not to intrude on it. Just to notice it. One morning outside of Williams there was a woman in the back booth with a cold cup of coffee and a notebook open in front of her that she wasn’t writing in. I didn’t go over. That’s not what the booth in the back is for. But I asked the waitress on the way out. She’d lost her husband six months back and the diner was the right amount of noise without requiring anything from her.

This week’s Roadside Notes is about being seen without being required to perform for the person seeing you. One of the quietest kindnesses one person can offer another. The booth in the back is full of people who need it.
