  • 01. Cancer Survivorship and the Importance of Community

There are many perceptions regarding the topic of cancer. There are stories of patients going through cancer treatment, overcoming, and moving forward victoriously. Conversely, the image of a sick and frail person losing hair while facing imminent death comes to mind for many.

In this episode, Natalie Zacharczyk gives an authentic and honest account of her cancer story. She reveals a new world of cancer which is unknown to most people – especially those who are not personally affected by the disease. She discusses survivorship and the nuances of what its role in her personal journey meant. Cancer survivorship initiatives are created to bring cancer patients together to share their experiences. Natalie brings us into her personal endeavor of going from an attitude of survivorship to thriving with cancer.

By sharing her experience with others with Stage-4 breast cancer, she found connection and community where she felt “normal”. Knowing that being understood in a group setting was the most important component of her cancer survivorship, she went on to open her own cancer community.
