  • Republished - #79 Jayo Archer "Coffee, bikes and life"

The podcast has been sadden to hear the news of Jayo Archer's recent passing whilst practicing his Triple Backflip. As a team we wanted to pay tribute to the incredible force that was Jayo. As Jayo wanted to inspire people we thought we would republish his episode so more of you can hear how inspiring he was and as a reminder to travel your own path in life. This episode was recorded prior to him achieving the Triple Backflip in competition. He did however let it slip that he had achieved it in practice. Yes I got the world exclusive!...realising his mistake, he asked me to take it out. So...I did. He seemed indestructible, listening it is not hard to understand why.

Sadly, the world lost a good one.

Thoughts are with his fiancée, family and friends.

For those who didn't know of Jayo.

Jayo Archer was one of Australia’s top Freestyle Motor Cross riders- the first Triple Backflip in competition. Shaking off all misconceptions of the sport, a professional athlete, determined to take the sport to new heights. Literally. X-Games Athlete, Nitro Circus, Brand Ambassador and all round nice guy.

  • #102 POW in Hanoi Hilton - Charlie Plumb

Captain Charlie Plumb has lived what he believes to be the American Dream. As a farm kid from Kansas, he fantasized about airplanes, although he felt certain he would never have the opportunity to pilot one. It would be the United States Navy who afforded Plumb the opportunity to live out that dream.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Plumb completed Navy Flight Training and reported to Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego where he flew the first adversarial flights in the development of what would be called The Navy Fighter Weapons School, currently known as “TOP GUN.” The next year, Plumb’s squadron the Aardvarks launched on the Aircraft Carrier USS Kitty Hawk with Fighter Squadron 114 to fly the Navy’s hottest airplane, the F-4 Phantom Jet. Code named “Plumber,” Charlie Plumb flew 74 successful combat missions over North Vietnam and made over 100 carrier landings.

On his 75th mission, just five days before the end of his tour, Plumb was shot down over Hanoi, taken prisoner and spent the next 2,103 days in North Vietnamese Prisoner of War camps. His first prison cell was 8 ft. long and 8 ft. wide. During his nearly six years of captivity, Plumb distinguished himself as a pro in underground communications. He was a great inspiration to all the other POWs and served as chaplain for two years.

Following his repatriation, Plumb continued his Navy flying career in Reserve Squadrons where he flew A-4 Sky Hawks, A-7 Corsairs and FA-18 Hornets. His last two commands as a Naval Reservist were on the Aircraft Carrier Corral Sea and at a Fighter Air Wing in California. He retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Captain after 31 years of service.

Since his return home, Plumb has captivated more than 5,000 audiences in almost every industry around the world with stories that parallel his POW experience with the challenges of everyday life.

To this day, Captain Plumb continues to fly left seat at every opportunity. The most treasured plane he owns and flies is a WWII PT-19 Open-Cockpit antique which is currently on loan to the Palm Springs, CA Air Museum. He also owns a Rutan-designed experimental single-engine Long-Eze.

  • #100 Eyeless Mind - Stephanie Duesing

How can you be blind and not even know it? Stephanie Duesing is an author, speaker, and international advocate for people who have CVI.

In January of 2017, she discovered that her straight A honors student, genius artist, and water polo-playing son Sebastian was almost completely blind and no one knew, not even Sebastian himself. He was fifteen and just about to enroll in driver's ed. We were devastated. Terrified for her son's safety, overwhelmed with guilt at not knowing that her own son was blind, and utterly baffled at the impossibility of the situation, she embarked on a journey to find answers.

Her book Eyeless Mind: A Memoir About Seeing and Being Seen is the true story of how she, an ordinary music teacher, made a major medical discovery in the field of visual neuroplasticity and the horrific medical malpractice and abuse she experienced trying to get a diagnosis for what turned out to be a common visual impairment. Her son Sebastian is the only person in the world known to process his vision verbally, which means that he sees with words like a bat sees with sound. Dr. Lotfi Merabet, the director of the Laboratory for Visual Neuroplasticity at Schepens Eye Research Institute, associate scientist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, and associate professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, published this paper on Sebastian's use of verbal mediation to process his vision in collaboration with Dr. Barry Kran, the head of optometrics at the New England Eye Low Vision Clinic at the Perkins School for the Blind.

Although Sebastian's neuroplastic adaptation to his neurological visual impairment is unique, his actual condition of CVI is common and is poorly understood. Cerebral/cortical visual impairment was identified as the number one cause of visual impairment in the developed world more than ten years ago, and it still doesn't have a diagnostic code within the American medical industry.

Dr. Merabet says that Eyeless Mind is "a must-read for any family facing the challenges of raising a child with any disability."

It is Stephanie’s mission to end the discrimination against people who have CVI.

  • #97 "10 feet tall & not quite bull**proof" - Cameron Hardiman

Cameron Hardiman joined the Victoria Police at age eighteen and served over 34 years in policing. Most of his time with Victoria Police was as an air observer with the Police Air Wing. He saw his fair share of trauma and dealt with it like most coppers would: he quickly put each dangerous job out of his mind as soon as it was over. But one particular rescue in Bass Strait brought about a reckoning - and Cameron was never the same again. He eventually joined the Australian Federal Police and served on overseas missions that included the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. He then transferred into an investigations role, focusing first on general crime, then people smuggling operations and counter terr***sm. Cameron has authored “ten feet tall and not quite bull**proof” about his story.
