- 5. The Shade of Trees I'll Never Sit Under
There's an old maple behind one of our buildings. Bigger around than I can reach with both arms. Somebody planted it 70, maybe 100 years ago. A man I'll never meet. Gone longer than I've probably been alive.
He never sat where I sat today. The shade was never there for him.
You don't own a building. You hold it for one stretch of its long life. You are a chapter, not the author of that book.
The things that matter most, you will never see pay off. That's what a builder is. You plant them anyway.
9m - Aug 21, 2026 - 5.
Tu plantes pareil.
11m - Aug 21, 2026 - 4. The One Number I Look for in Every Investment
Every investment tells a story.
But stories don't protect your capital.
When I review an opportunity, I'm not looking for the best projections or the highest returns. I'm looking for one thing: whether the people asking for my trust are willing to share the same risk.
That idea has existed for thousands of years. Long before modern finance, long before the phrase *skin in the game* became popular.
In this reflection, I explore why true alignment isn't something you claim—it's something you prove.

8m - Aug 10, 2026 - 4.

9m - Aug 10, 2026 - 3. Build so the storm feeds you.
There's a storm tonight. The wind has been working the house for an hour.
The same wind that blows out a candle is the wind that makes a fire roar. Same wind. Two opposite fates.
The only difference is what you built.
12m - Jul 25, 2026 - 3.
15m - Jul 13, 2026 - 2. The landing is not the verdict.
There's a habit almost nobody knows they have. Judging a decision by how it landed.
I had a call this afternoon with one of our investors. A good one. He brought up a project that didn't work out.
The thesis was right. The building was right.
The market moved in a way nobody could have predicted.
But the deal didn't work. And he was right to say so.
The landing is not the verdict. The landing is just the landing.
14m - Jul 13, 2026 - 1.
16m - Jul 4, 2026 - 1. I've been thinking about time.
I came back from a building this afternoon. I've been coming back to the same one for six years. When I bought it, I had three kids. I have four now.
The building hasn't changed much. I have.
In this open conversation, the one everything else gets measured against. Not money. The ability to leave money alone.
A question I sit with late at night : what am I doing today that I won't be around to see finished ?
